Your Middle Name

Do you have a middle name? What is it? Do you like it?

Is it a typical one of its time?

Mine is Susan, born in the early 70s.
From memory, school friends at the time had Ann (more commonly without the ‘e’), Louise, Jane, Marie, Elizabeth and Claire.
I can’t remember anyone with Grace, May/Mae or Rose, which seems to be very popular at the moment.

Della
My dad loved it and I've never met another
I bloody hate it-but if dad asked then I love it

RedRobyn2021 · 19/11/2021 15:19

@Inthesameboatatmo

I think that's a beautiful name, why don't you like it?

Amdone123 · 19/11/2021 15:21

My ds's middle name is the male equivalent of my dm's 1st name : Paula / Paul for eg. All my nephews' middle names are either their dad's first name or granddad's first name. I think middle names are a lovely opportunity to honour relatives.
As my parents allowed me, I let my ds choose his own confirmation name. He chose his paternal granddad's first name. He was Jamaican and died 6 weeks before my ds's birth and, and it's very biblical ( I don't mean Jacob or Elijah even. Very extreme). When he came home from school he made us laugh declaring that no one else had chosen said name !

My middle name is for my grandmother. Can't say I've ever given it much though. It's a normal name. I'm expecting my first DC next year, and think I will chose a family name for the middle name

viques · 19/11/2021 15:27

Didn’t get given one, unlike sister who was middle named after an aunt , and later a brother middle named after no one at all. My mother had a number of other sisters so I could have had one of their names, but didn’t! So when I was little, if anyone asked me, I was Viques Rose.

Still rankles that my parents didn’t love me enough to spend a few minutes choosing a middle name. Grin

WhatHoMarjorie · 19/11/2021 15:31

Mary. Like 95% of Irish women born pre-1980.

I don't like it or dislike it, it's just a name I need to input on forms sometimes. For all the stressing about middle names I see gong on here I rarely have cause to think about my middle name.

blueplan · 19/11/2021 15:40

@MrsPleasant

Mine is Anne. A pointless filler name.
Mine is also Anne, but named after my dds beloved mum who died when he was a child. My dcs have names which honour both dh and my sides of the family. Neither is common and both speak to their heritage. I know they like their middle names, as one has used it for their own D's first name.
Inthesameboatatmo · 19/11/2021 15:50

@redrobyn2021.
People mispronounce it on forms and such , they say odell like doddle without the d lol.

ThisIsTrifficult · 19/11/2021 16:04

Mine is Katherine. Early 80's child. I quite like it and I've yet to meet anyone with it as a middle name.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 19/11/2021 18:28

DS’s middle name is Neo.

ExH really liked The Matrix.

DS likes it though, and it goes well with his long first name.

Sunshine4you · 19/11/2021 18:37

Mine is Mimi

BingBongToTheMoon · 19/11/2021 18:44

Mary. My maternal grandmother.
My sister has my paternal grandmother’s, Ellen.

SE13Mummy · 19/11/2021 18:49

Late 1970s here and mine is Louise... like a lot of my peers. Those who don't have Louise seem to have Elizabeth or Claire in the main and are not usually named after someone.

My DC1 has one of my grandparents' name as their middle name. It was absolutely chosen to celebrate that grandparent and as DC1 was the only great grandchild they were alive to meet, that connection feels all the more special. DC2's middle name celebrates circumstances rather than a person. Both middle names are perfectly ordinary, but not overused, names. DC1 has a couple of friends with the same middle name - they're also named after grandparents.

cumulonimbus523 · 19/11/2021 18:53

I have my mum's first name as my middle name (tradition where I'm from is dad's first name irrespective of sex) but my dad said absolutely not. I personally love it and if I have a DD I'd like to give her my name as a middle name to keep that going.

Santaischeckinglists · 19/11/2021 18:53

Frances.
My aunt had it as mn.
Her df was John Francis.

AutumnAlmanack · 19/11/2021 18:53

Nicola - named after my mother's gynaecologist! There are many Nicolas around here!

RuthW · 19/11/2021 18:58

I didn't have one. Always wanted one so I gave myself one for my special birthday.

LoveFall · 19/11/2021 19:00

My two grandmothers had the middle names Adelia and Adelaide. I was given Adel. I wish my parents had spelled it Adele.

MumofSpud · 19/11/2021 19:02

Another 70s Jane here!
I remember the majority of my friends at primary school also had Jane as a middle name - I suppose the equivalent today is Rose or Lily.

Arsewangry · 19/11/2021 19:13

Michelle and I do quite like it.

santabetterwashhishands · 19/11/2021 19:31

Born in the 70s and it's plain Jane lol .
Never use it

brambleon · 19/11/2021 19:32

Mine is Ann (no E), the same as my DM’s and my DGM’s. I didn’t use it as DD’s middle name but I did use a name it could be short for

WaitinginVain · 19/11/2021 19:42

A 70's Joanne here and really dislike it. Have often thought Joanna sounds so much better but my first name also ends in 'a' so maybe a bit much.

None of my DC have middle names, I wasn't brave enough to go with what I wanted for DS1, so they all have just the one name.

I think my own name did influence my choices, I didn't want them to have anything half as boring.

Both my parents have unusual names though so maybe they were also influenced by that Hmm.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 19/11/2021 19:44

Mine is Ruth. It's a bit dull but it was after my godmother so, I barely ever think about it, never use it except for very official forms which ask.

All my dc have middle names after a family member or for a significant reason.

LucyLastik · 19/11/2021 19:46

My middle name is Irene 🥴
