Your Middle Name

Do you have a middle name? What is it? Do you like it?

Is it a typical one of its time?

Mine is Susan, born in the early 70s.
From memory, school friends at the time had Ann (more commonly without the ‘e’), Louise, Jane, Marie, Elizabeth and Claire.
I can’t remember anyone with Grace, May/Mae or Rose, which seems to be very popular at the moment.

None for me but pretty much every girl I knew had either Rose, Grace or Marie. No kidding!

Born in the late '70s, my middle name is Katrice. Apparently my mother was reading the Radio Times whilst pregnant with me and saw the name "of a Shakespearian actress" and liked it enough to lumber me with. Had no idea how to spell it properly until I was about 7, and because of the way it's pronounced ("Cat-rice"), led to that becoming my older brothers nickname for me (they got away with Francis and Peter...).

Sadly, a few years ago, I read about the case of a little girl called Katrice Lee who tragically disappeared in Germany on her second birthday - she'd be 43 now to my 45 - and has literally never been found. She's the only other English (her family were military, like mine) "Katrice" that I know of.

My two middle names are totally outing. They are family surnames. I like them both and like having two middle names although it was a pain growing up since most official forms only allowed for one.

Louise (born early 90’s), think it’s a bit boring but my mum and my cousin have the same middle name.
I chose DD’s because I write scholarly articles based on them! It’s Brontë, we love it. DS’s is going to be Merlin (when he’s born - 7 weeks to go), we like literary names.

My middle name is Elizabeth; I was born in the year of the silver jubilee. I don't particularly like it but don't have much cause to use it.

DH born same year - middle name Elvis, who died that year. He hates it!

Yes, Ruth. I like it, I like the Bible connection and the meaning. I wouldn't say it was particularly of it's time, lots of girls my age had Louise, Marie or Jane

I have my Mum's maiden name for my middle name. Bit of a tradition in parts of Scotland...

I was born late 70s and my middle name is Rebecca. I really like it and wish my parents had chosen it as my first name. I even considered using it as my name when I started uni but didn't think I would get used to it!!

Mine is Elizabeth, after my grandma. My kids also have family names as middle names, the first 3 are quite generic (Louis, Jean, Louise) but the last two are more interesting (Virginia and Maya) Some of my younger siblings have pretty cool family names as middle names.

Catherine 😊 I love it and think it goes well with my shorter first name. My parents considered it for my first name but worried it would be shortened to ‘Kathy’ so settled on it as a middle instead. I’m a 90’s baby for reference

I quite like mine, it's one or many variations or Helen. It's Lenore, and was m'y godmother's middle name.

Jayne. Variants of which have been used in my maternal line since 1845. Apparently after an ancestor named Johanna.
I'd have loved to know more about her - this was only uncovered after I started researching my family history. Some female ancestors have her surname included as well.
My daughter continues this tradition with Jennie and my surname.
My younger daughter has her paternal mother's name and my surname.

I love middle names which are chosen to honour or for family reasons. I think they should have meaning.

Mary. Same as my sisters, which the priest chose because her original middle name wasn’t religious so he added a religious one in. I have a double barrel first name so just got the one middle name.

Mine is Lindsay after a family member. I suppose there were a few at my school as first names. It was more of its time than the first option which is making a resurgence now but was definitely old fashioned when I was born.

Mine is too outing to say here but is a combination of both my grandmothers’ names.

Friends’ middle names in my school year (born 79-81) include Jayne/Jane, Lucy, Fiona, Sara, Heather, Claire, Georgina, Marie/Mary, Sheena, and that kind of thing. So all very of their time.

My DH chose my first born’s middle name and I’ve never liked it, but I was in a fog of anaemia and tiredness so didn’t put up a fight.
It’s one of my regrets, but she doesn’t know.
