Your Middle Name

Do you have a middle name? What is it? Do you like it?

Is it a typical one of its time?

Mine is Susan, born in the early 70s.
From memory, school friends at the time had Ann (more commonly without the ‘e’), Louise, Jane, Marie, Elizabeth and Claire.
I can’t remember anyone with Grace, May/Mae or Rose, which seems to be very popular at the moment.

Another 80s Louise here, but it's my mother's name and she was also named after a relative. I plan to use it as a middle name if I ever have a DD to keep it in the family.

Iamanicepersonreally · 20/11/2021 06:39

Mine is Marion. Born in the 80s. I think it’s dreadful. Apologies to any Marions out there

Laska2Meryls · 20/11/2021 06:55

Mines Lesley, hated it as a child as I thought it sounded ugly, but quite like it now. My first name is one if those everyone says will never come back on the naming threads here but it was really popular in the day..

@StickyStickyStickStickSong

Mine is Nicola, not named after anyone, mom just liked it and it just had a nice ring to it after my first name being 1 syllable...and I've not met another person with Nicola as a middle name so I quite like it Smile

My DS has 2 as I chose Anthony after my DU who passed a a few years ago who I adored like a father! And my DH chose David which is the middle name of his DF, his first name is 1 syllable so it has quite a nice ring to it too

I am a Nicola 2nd name too!

Mine is Angelina after my paternal grandmother. I love it.

My sons both have middle names honouring people/places.

Adrian after his father and grandfather’s middle name and Fraser after the place we were married.

35andThriving · 20/11/2021 13:18

I love my middle name. It feels like a little gift my dad picked out for me.

VanillaAndOrange · 20/11/2021 16:49

Mine is Elizabeth and it was my mum's name, but it was also very popular as a middle name when I was born in the 60s. I'd say the other popular middle names of the time were probably Anne, Jane and Louise, although Jane and Louise were also very popular as first names.

Notdoingthis · 20/11/2021 20:31

I don't have one.
My sisters' middle names are Jane and Emma.
I chose family names for the middle names of my children.

TuftyMarmoset · 20/11/2021 20:34

I don't have one. When I was at school (2000s) everyone's middle name seemed to be Jane or Louise for girls, James for boys.

AuntDympna · 21/11/2021 07:04

In my family middle names are for grandparents and aunts.

GoodnightGrandma · 21/11/2021 07:08

My DH chose my first born’s middle name and I’ve never liked it, but I was in a fog of anaemia and tiredness so didn’t put up a fight.
It’s one of my regrets, but she doesn’t know.

ifigoup · 21/11/2021 07:58

Mine is too outing to say here but is a combination of both my grandmothers’ names.

Friends’ middle names in my school year (born 79-81) include Jayne/Jane, Lucy, Fiona, Sara, Heather, Claire, Georgina, Marie/Mary, Sheena, and that kind of thing. So all very of their time.

EventOfTheSeason · 21/11/2021 08:02

Mine is Lindsay after a family member. I suppose there were a few at my school as first names. It was more of its time than the first option which is making a resurgence now but was definitely old fashioned when I was born.

NowNumber5 · 21/11/2021 08:09

There are some really cool names on here!
Those of you who did not like theirs, what would you have chosen for yourself?
And did you subsequently use it for your child?
I longed to be called something quite a bit fancier than Susan Grin

Mine is Elizabeth. Quite usual for the 1950s when I was born. I don't mind it.

NowNumber5 · 21/11/2021 08:11

Did not like yours*, not theirs.

Mine is Joanna. Don’t like it at all.

SprinkledGlitter · 25/11/2021 20:26

I always wanted to have Wendy as mine when I was young...Mumsnet seems to hate that name now.

SometimesRavenSometimesParrot · 27/11/2021 01:29

Mary. Same as my sisters, which the priest chose because her original middle name wasn’t religious so he added a religious one in. I have a double barrel first name so just got the one middle name.

GrimDamnFanjo · 27/11/2021 11:05

Jayne. Variants of which have been used in my maternal line since 1845. Apparently after an ancestor named Johanna.
I'd have loved to know more about her - this was only uncovered after I started researching my family history. Some female ancestors have her surname included as well.
My daughter continues this tradition with Jennie and my surname.
My younger daughter has her paternal mother's name and my surname.

I love middle names which are chosen to honour or for family reasons. I think they should have meaning.

BeyondMyWits · 27/11/2021 11:09

Sadie... passed down the family.

newtb · 27/11/2021 11:15

I quite like mine, it's one or many variations or Helen. It's Lenore, and was m'y godmother's middle name.
From thé Raven by Poe.

Doughnuttie · 28/11/2021 10:09

Catherine 😊 I love it and think it goes well with my shorter first name. My parents considered it for my first name but worried it would be shortened to ‘Kathy’ so settled on it as a middle instead. I’m a 90’s baby for reference

CaitlinEJ · 28/11/2021 10:13

Mine is Elizabeth, after my grandma. My kids also have family names as middle names, the first 3 are quite generic (Louis, Jean, Louise) but the last two are more interesting (Virginia and Maya) Some of my younger siblings have pretty cool family names as middle names.

rc22 · 28/11/2021 10:17

I was born late 70s and my middle name is Rebecca. I really like it and wish my parents had chosen it as my first name. I even considered using it as my name when I started uni but didn't think I would get used to it!!
