Here I go again... Moritz

Baby boy arriving within the next 4 weeks. My DH was previously obsessed with Arve (one syllable Arvv) which was comically shut down by fellow MNers. Now he is fixated on Moritz (nn Morrie), Serge or Walter.

I don't know what's wrong with me but I can't seem to come up with any names I like other than Tom (which DH has fairly said is safe/boring). I don't mind Walter but fear he'd get Wally (which I really dislike).

I'm still working crazy hours and feel like my brain switches off at the same time I shut my laptop. Please help me see sense - are all of these names horrible?

My favourite Italian name is Matteo, I think it sounds lovely.

Cushionsnotpillows · 29/04/2021 20:52

Nowt wrong with Tom. Decent strong name and no stupid nicknames. And every Tom I've known for last several years has been a Tom, not short for Thomas etc, just Tom on the birth certificate.

Your husband needs to calm down and remember this actual human being you're currently growing will have to live with their name forever. It's not a game. All 3 are pretty damn awful but Moritz is a definite hell no.

StillRailing · 29/04/2021 20:53

San Moritz.

hungrywalrus · 29/04/2021 20:55

Moritz is making a comeback... in Germany.

Google Max und Moritz.

Ninkanink · 29/04/2021 21:01

Why have a two-syllable nickname for a two-syllable name? That doesn’t make any sense at all.

I have to be honest and say I don’t like any of his choices. I much prefer Tom (although personally I’d definitely name him Thomas and use Tom as a diminutive). There is absolutely nothing wrong with safe/boring, especially when one’s supposedly interesting choices are so...erm...’interesting.’

Reinventinganna · 29/04/2021 21:01

How about Stefan if he’s in to German names?

Ninkanink · 29/04/2021 21:03

I agree. He’s not naming a puppy or a gaming character.

Please can you just agree that you will pick the first name and he can pick the middle name? At least that way the silliness is somewhat mitigated.

HuntingoftheSnark · 29/04/2021 21:03

How about Wolfgang nn Wolfie?

Ninkanink · 29/04/2021 21:04

I actually don’t mind Walter as a name but Wally rules it out.

InsolentAnnie · 29/04/2021 21:05

Moritz is a German name. I knew a very sweet little boy with that name and always thought how nice it was. I don’t get why everyone on here hates it?!

Ninkanink · 29/04/2021 21:07

I don’t mind it in and of itself actually (being Danish I quite like most Germanic names) but for the fact that I’ve a bit of an issue with how he’s going about picking these names. It’s all very haphazard, with too much emphasis on being ‘interesting’.

And I do think that here in the U.K. most people will think of tanning lotion and/or skiing.

Callybrid · 29/04/2021 21:18

What about Mathias/Matt/Matty? Has a bit of European flair but easy to pronounce/not too crazy. (I’ve been watching Call My Agent Grin)

BrownEyedGirl80 · 29/04/2021 21:19

Reminds me of Chloe Grace Moritz the actor

Biscuitsneeded · 29/04/2021 21:21

Have Lorenzo! That's nice, and with an Italian grandparent perfectly acceptable!

Flugbusters4 · 29/04/2021 21:22

Moritz is a good cat name but I don't like it for a human child

CandyLeBonBon · 29/04/2021 21:31

Well if you have another baby boy after this one you could call him Balonz. I think it goes nicely with Moritz!

CharlieBoo · 29/04/2021 21:49

Like the fake tan?

TSSDNCOP · 29/04/2021 21:49

No self-respecting cat would allow itself to be called Moritz.

thiswaythat · 29/04/2021 21:52

Lorenzo is a cracker of a name! Or even just Enzo if he wants something shorter ?

Anystarinthesky · 29/04/2021 21:58

Tom is a great name.

I'm not so keen on your other choices, especially Moritz.

Throughabushbackwards · 29/04/2021 22:00

What about Tomas, as a German form of Tom?

Throughabushbackwards · 29/04/2021 22:02

Sorry, I've just checked myself and Tomas is more commonly a Scandinavian name than a German one. I know a German chap with that name, though, hence my suggestion.

Spied · 29/04/2021 22:06

Moritz reminds me of a cheap handbag/purse ( I'm sure I had a plastic 'Moritz' purse as a teenBlush).
Serge us awful. Reminds me of a meerkat.
Lorenzo is nice.
I really don't think you can beat Tom though.

DoomscroIIer · 29/04/2021 22:06

Serge is nice
Moritz - meh. Prefer Matteo, Marius, Mattius

Moondust001 · 29/04/2021 22:07

The Welsh version of Thomas is Tomos and it's fairly common in Wales

My apologies. I don't speak Welsh. I must inform my fluent Welsh speaking sister in law of Welsh origins for generations that she can't spell Welsh. Personally I am Scots Irish, and have never, in all my visits to friends and relatives in Wales, heard it for anyone but my nephew. But I am sure you are right, and there are no variations in spellings and its totally commonplace/
