Here I go again... Moritz

Baby boy arriving within the next 4 weeks. My DH was previously obsessed with Arve (one syllable Arvv) which was comically shut down by fellow MNers. Now he is fixated on Moritz (nn Morrie), Serge or Walter.

I don't know what's wrong with me but I can't seem to come up with any names I like other than Tom (which DH has fairly said is safe/boring). I don't mind Walter but fear he'd get Wally (which I really dislike).

I'm still working crazy hours and feel like my brain switches off at the same time I shut my laptop. Please help me see sense - are all of these names horrible?

Moritz is a brand of beer in Spain.

Here I go again... Moritz

Oh, Kirk St MoritzGrin how I miss him. Other ski resorts are available though. Chamonix is nice. Or if you're feeling summery, St Tropez

Onlinedilema · 29/04/2021 22:14

Who's surname is the baby getting?
If your boyfriends then I'd tell him you'll be choosing the name. All his choices are awful.

AppleBarrel · 29/04/2021 22:15

I know more than one young Moritz - all German.

I really like it, pronounced differently to Maurice, it's like "more it's" with emphasis on the first syllable.

partyatthepalace · 29/04/2021 22:16

Serge and Moritz are pretty mental. Walter is Ok, but yes Wally, or rather - no. Were you the lady with the DP who fancies himself as a 6foot scandi and was projecting onto the baby? He seems now to be in a James Bond movie if so. I want to meet this man.

Tom is nice but a little dull after Serge.. how about Jude, Rafe, Max, Jerome, Jethro, Kester, Casper, Caleb, Linus, Jonas

StillRailing · 29/04/2021 22:17

Maurizio?

partyatthepalace · 29/04/2021 22:18

... I think you need to have a running list on the fridge and just get him to score each one out of 3. You must save him from himself.

LilaButterfly · 29/04/2021 22:31

One of my best friends is called Moritz. Mother German father british.
His parents say they had some negative reactions to the name at first, but it grows on people. I actually really like it.
And in German speaking countries its a well known name. Not extremely common, but definitely known.

Sauvignonblanket · 29/04/2021 22:34

I would go back to the Italian phase and Lorenzo non Renzo.

Sauvignonblanket · 29/04/2021 22:34

Nn Renzo - sorry, autocorrect

Bramblebutter · 29/04/2021 22:58

Tom 100%

My apologies. I don't speak Welsh. I must inform my fluent Welsh speaking sister in law of Welsh origins for generations that she can't spell Welsh. Personally I am Scots Irish, and have never, in all my visits to friends and relatives in Wales, heard it for anyone but my nephew. But I am sure you are right, and there are no variations in spellings and its totally commonplace/

It's fairly common, as I said. 38th most common baby name for boys in Wales in 2019, next to Max and Joshua. DS has three friends called Tomos in his year at school. You seem a bit miffed but it wasn't a personal attack - I thought the OP should know that the Welsh version is Tomos and not Tomas, but all names are kind of made up and some people do like an individual spelling so anything is possible.

Google will show you what I mean "Tomos Wales" gives you pages of people called Tomos. "Tomas Wales" gives you one, an English rugby player.

ShoppingPrecinctPrincess · 29/04/2021 23:42

Big no.

Reminds me of the worst song of all time 'Where Do You Go To My Lovely'

And when the snow falls you're found in St. Moritz
With the others of the jet set
And you sip your Napoleon brandy
But you never get your lips wet, no, you don't

ShoppingPrecinctPrincess · 29/04/2021 23:43

I like Serge though. Very cool.

JemimaJoy · 30/04/2021 01:21

Moritz IS a name, it's the name of a character in a lovely book I read a few years ago and forgot the title of and have been searching for for years! Reading this thread triggered my memory that the lead character was named Moritz Danieki and I googled it and have finally found the book... So thank you!!! GrinGrinGrin

BettysCardigan · 30/04/2021 07:57

Lorenzo is lovely!

Lorenzo
Enzo
Ezra

All cool names Smile

CaffiSaliMali · 30/04/2021 09:26

I know a young Walter, everyone calls him Walter, not Walt or Wally. Walter is the best on your husband's list.

If he likes Italian names and has Italian heritage how about something like Matteo, Leonardo/Leo or Luca? Tomasso would give a more unusual full name for him and give you the option of Tom for short?

Failing that why not both of you separately go through the top 1000 names, select some you like and then compare afterwards and see what you have in common? Or at least see if there are any similarities that could give you a starting point?

BingBongToTheMoon · 30/04/2021 09:30

It sounds Jewish (not a bad thing, so is my own name).

Teafirst · 30/04/2021 09:31

Moritz - just makes me think of the angsty teen from Spring Awakening? Nope.

Thebookswereherfriends · 30/04/2021 09:32

Lorenzo and Salvatore were good suggestions in comparison and I’m starting to think you might be the problem.

KirstenBlest · 30/04/2021 09:36

@Moondust001

The Welsh version of Thomas is Tomos and it's fairly common in Wales

My apologies. I don't speak Welsh. I must inform my fluent Welsh speaking sister in law of Welsh origins for generations that she can't spell Welsh. Personally I am Scots Irish, and have never, in all my visits to friends and relatives in Wales, heard it for anyone but my nephew. But I am sure you are right, and there are no variations in spellings and its totally commonplace/

Perfectly OK if your SIL wishes to spell it a certain way, but the Welsh spelling is Tomos, and as others have pointed out, Tomos is a popular name in Wales.

To post that the Welsh spelling is Tomas based on one person with the name is misleading.

For some reason, it seems to always be the Welsh or Irish names

PattyPan · 30/04/2021 09:36

Moritz is a bit old fashioned and definitely weird if no German connection. Same for Serge although French in that case (Eg Serge Gainsbourg).
Walter is the most usable but I agree Wally would be a bit unfortunate, could you maybe pre-empt nicknames by calling him Walt for short?

FolornLawn · 30/04/2021 09:41

Go Lorenzo, it's lovely.

Louis Theroux has a Walter. His other two kids are Frederick and Albert. Either of those any good?

PattyPan · 30/04/2021 09:45

@Throughabushbackwards Thomas is a really common name in Germany, spelt like that. It was one of the most popular names in the 50s-80s but has got a bit less popular in recent years. The opposite to Moritz which I think of as a grandpa name but it’s a bit trendy now same as Arthur, Edith etc in the U.K.

coffeemonster23 · 30/04/2021 09:49

What about Monty? Similar sounding to you NN Morrie, but is actually a proper name. I know one toddler called Monty
