Here I go again... Moritz

Baby boy arriving within the next 4 weeks. My DH was previously obsessed with Arve (one syllable Arvv) which was comically shut down by fellow MNers. Now he is fixated on Moritz (nn Morrie), Serge or Walter.

I don't know what's wrong with me but I can't seem to come up with any names I like other than Tom (which DH has fairly said is safe/boring). I don't mind Walter but fear he'd get Wally (which I really dislike).

I'm still working crazy hours and feel like my brain switches off at the same time I shut my laptop. Please help me see sense - are all of these names horrible?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Stichintime · 29/04/2021 19:35

I quite like Moritz, but you'd have to see if it suits the baby. I'd use Ritz as a nn, don't like Morrie at all.

wombatgoeswild · 29/04/2021 19:36

It's a resort?

Nn - Ski boy?

inappropriateraspberry · 29/04/2021 19:43

Moritz is not a name (unless you're a saint)!
Serge - are you or your husband French?
Walter - nice enough, but may well be Wally unless you insist on Walt or something else.
What's wrong with a 'safe' name like Tom?
I don't know why everyone is determined to choose 'unique' or unusual names.

Cinderellashoes · 29/04/2021 19:45

Moritz sounds like a brand of fake tan.. sorry

BettysCardigan · 29/04/2021 19:45

It's a baby, not a puppy or a toy, your husband needs to remember that.

Or maybe he could change his own name to Moritz and go round introducing himself and see how it feels?

ILoveShula · 29/04/2021 19:49

After you remove Tom, which is completely safe, Walter is the best of the bunch and would be Walt
Serge is ok but is it Serrzh, Suhzh, Suhj, Sarge?
Morris/Maurice is nice.
Moritz is not awful but is too closely related IMO to the place.

Saucery · 29/04/2021 19:49

No. Kirk St Moritz.

Maurice ? Morris?

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 29/04/2021 19:53

It reminds me of Spring Awakening

I prefer Melchior lol

Moondust001 · 29/04/2021 19:54

I have never answered one of these type of threads. But I saw the title. No. Just no. No. Not ever. No. Definitely not.

If you like Tom, what about Tomas- the Welsh version of Thomas. Not common even in Wales, but can be shortened to Tom. But Tomas isn't a mouthful either.

EileenGC · 29/04/2021 19:56

Is he German? Those are very old fashioned German names, I have colleagues with those as middle names, their grandfathers or great-grandfathers were born in the early-to mid 1900s.

FoolsAssassin · 29/04/2021 19:57

Reminds me of a book I had as a child, not a very positive association
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_and_Moritz

N0ManJan · 29/04/2021 20:01

I say this in the nicest way possible but Moritz really isn’t nice. If you like the sound of it I would go Morris/Maurice.
Tom is lovely, Walter I can see getting shortened to wally and Serge is quite cool but I think would depend on your last name.

zigaziga · 29/04/2021 20:05

Can you just print out the top 500 boys names from the ONS site and just go through them one by one until you find a name you nothing quite like?

Puntastic · 29/04/2021 20:05

Yikes. And I thought my DH had bad taste in names!

Walter is lovely- though don't worry about nicknames; you can't control them anyway and you can always insist on calling him Walter or Walt- doesn't matter what his friends call him.

Wouldn't touch the rest with a bargepole. Barring Tom, which is fine. I prefer James though, if you're going for a safe name.

User27aw · 29/04/2021 20:05

@Saucery

No. Kirk St Moritz.

Maurice ? Morris?

Kirk St Moritz was my first thought!

The Welsh version of Thomas is Tomos and it's fairly common in Wales.

Like the St Tropez knock off tanning lotion?

Flappityflippers1 · 29/04/2021 20:10

President of the company I work for is called Moritz - lovely man (German)

gottakeeponmovin · 29/04/2021 20:12

I really like serge - the other two are a no from me - especially Moritz

sarah13xx · 29/04/2021 20:18

I think the nickname Morrie is nice, especially since Mori is a nice baby shop 😂 what about Ari? It’s one of my favourite names ever and is way under used!

Susie477 · 29/04/2021 20:30

Moritz is a brand of Spanish beer, brewed in Barcelona. It’s a Czech-style pilsner. Very tasty.

Serge is good, or how about Sergio?

Violetlavenders · 29/04/2021 20:41

Moritz is the German spelling . In the UK I'd spell it Maurice.

Growingyou · 29/04/2021 20:43

Haha @Moondust001 I don't know how alarmed I should be that out of all the wild topics that appear on MN, a baby boy potentially named Moritz was enough to push you into commentary territory.

DH has gone through a Scandinavian phase (no connection), an Italian phase (he is a quarter Italian but I shut down his favourites Salvatore and Lorenzo), and it now seems a German phase (again, no connection).

@zigaziga I think you're right, I just need to print the list and come up with a shortlist myself. DH prefers to "be inspired" (so I'll hide the list from him!)

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 29/04/2021 20:44

Moritz or Serge aren't really my taste, sorry. Walter's okay, a bit old-fashioned sounding in the UK but nice enough. I think he'd get nicknamed Walt rather than Wally (and Wally is a bit of a dated insult now, not sure many kids would use it). Tom is lovely but people will assume full name is Thomas/Tomos/Tomas, so probably a no go if your DH doesn't like it.

SymphonyofShadows · 29/04/2021 20:49

You’ve shut down Lorenzo which is an actual name, but you are considering Moritz? The world has gone fucking mad
