Here I go again... Moritz

Baby boy arriving within the next 4 weeks. My DH was previously obsessed with Arve (one syllable Arvv) which was comically shut down by fellow MNers. Now he is fixated on Moritz (nn Morrie), Serge or Walter.

I don't know what's wrong with me but I can't seem to come up with any names I like other than Tom (which DH has fairly said is safe/boring). I don't mind Walter but fear he'd get Wally (which I really dislike).

I'm still working crazy hours and feel like my brain switches off at the same time I shut my laptop. Please help me see sense - are all of these names horrible?

Moritz German

Maurits Dutch

Both nice!

Welsh Thomas is Tomos, not Tomas, and pronounced a bit differently

Violetlavenders · 30/04/2021 17:19

Mauritz Swedish

Maurice English

RecoveringChocaholic · 30/04/2021 17:53

Moritz is definitely German and not uncommon. I know several, but in England it would be a bit weird. Maurice would be a better option.
If you like German names there are better ones. I really like Franz which is having a resurgence in Germany. Also Maximillian nn Max.

Thedogscollar · 30/04/2021 18:04

In answer to your question OP Yes they are all truly awful names apart from Tom.

ChateauMargaux · 30/04/2021 18:06

I love Moritz.. I know a Morits and a Mauritz but I have to agree with everyone who said yes to Lorenzo or Lorenz if he wants to stick with the German theme.

Lindy2 · 30/04/2021 18:19

I prefer Tom.

Walter is ok. Walt is an ok nickname.

I don't like the others at all I'm afraid. Why is your DH picking names from countries he has no connection with? If he wants an unusual name then more unusual ones from a country of his own culture would surely be best. Your son is the one who will need to live with the name, spell it, explain it etc not your DH.

TatianaBis · 30/04/2021 20:04

What’s your longlist from your baby name book?

TatianaBis · 30/04/2021 20:08

I quite like Moritz personally.

user1493494961 · 01/05/2021 08:27

Go with Tom, he'll thank you when he knows what else was on the list.

Violetlavenders · 01/05/2021 11:13

We know sooo many Toms. It's not a very memorable name tbh. Like Steve or Mike... just a little dull from overuse imo.

I much prefer Moritz, but would spell it Maurice in the UK.

Estasala · 01/05/2021 13:19

I don't like any of your husband's names! Although I did horrify my DH with the flamboyant boys' names on my list. I just think all the ones he's drawn to are ugly...sorry.

Tom would be fine, but it does seem worlds apart from the unusual names that he likes. Random suggestions...

Laurence
Dylan
Murray
Inigo
Tobias
Marcus
Leonardo
Benedict
Edgar
Abraham
Oscar
Caesar
Arthur
Bartholomew
Francisco

Moritz is here!! But unnamed Smile

Top 3 names we agree on are Thomas (Tom), Walter (Walt), or Frederick. Surname similar length/sound to Rutherford. DH has given me a deadline of tonight to make the final call.

Would so appreciate final thoughts.

Is your DH aware he's naming a child and not a supermarket chain?

mogtheexcellent · 27/05/2021 17:31

Many congratulations. I'm glad you get to make the final call. Also glad I read the thread before posting as was going to say that it should be your choice since his ideas are so wacky.

I had the same with my DH who wanted zebedee. We have a five sylable surname Hmm. Whatever you do don't mention zebedee to your DH as he will probably like it.

Of the names you list I like Frederick (Freddie) best, Aassuming you wont be using Frederick in full across a packed soft play.

lottiegarbanzo · 27/05/2021 17:32

St Moritz ski resort. Will he be conceived there?

I quite like Serge. Or how about something like Stefan, Ludovic or Valentin?

Maurice is quite cool in a grandad chic sort of way. How about Wilfred?

Beeeeeeeeeeeeeep · 27/05/2021 17:33

Congratulations!
Thomas then Frederick. Not Walter.

BaronessBomburst · 27/05/2021 17:36

Thomas

lottiegarbanzo · 27/05/2021 17:37

Your deadline is six weeks after the baby is born. Don't let your DH railroad you. Why is it up to him?

H&M clothes shop is Hennes & Moritz - and was known by this full name in the 80s and 90s, so that's a big association for a lot of adults.

Fluffythefish · 27/05/2021 17:40

Congratulions! I really like Frederick. But I also know a 6 year old Walter and he is super cute and the name works for him. I like Walt as a nickname too

iklboo · 27/05/2021 17:49

Not Walter. They'll think you're Breaking Bad fans.

clpsmum · 27/05/2021 18:00

Murray instead?

Watto1 · 27/05/2021 18:08

I think Walter/Walt is lovely. Back in the 80s/90s, my gran used to smoke revolting menthol cigarettes called St Moritz. Not keen!

ladygindiva · 27/05/2021 18:10

I think Walter is fine, make clear the nn is Walt straightaway . The rest I'm not sure about! Tom is fab though.

ladygindiva · 27/05/2021 18:11

read your update! Congratulations!

AnyaMoondial · 27/05/2021 18:22

Congratulations!! I vote Thomas.
