Here I go again... Moritz

Baby boy arriving within the next 4 weeks. My DH was previously obsessed with Arve (one syllable Arvv) which was comically shut down by fellow MNers. Now he is fixated on Moritz (nn Morrie), Serge or Walter.

I don't know what's wrong with me but I can't seem to come up with any names I like other than Tom (which DH has fairly said is safe/boring). I don't mind Walter but fear he'd get Wally (which I really dislike).

I'm still working crazy hours and feel like my brain switches off at the same time I shut my laptop. Please help me see sense - are all of these names horrible?

Frederick then it can be Freddie or Fred. Like Thomas too. Walter is a no as we used to have a book called Walter the Farting Dog. Oh how I loved writing that down in the reading diary...

StevieNix · 27/05/2021 21:29

Moritz just makes me think of the cheap fake tan (st moritz is a cheap dupe for the st tropez fake tan)

Lucia574 · 27/05/2021 21:31

Congratulations!! Fred and and Thomas both great names. I’d share your concerns about Wally.

ChequerBoard · 27/05/2021 21:36

@InsolentAnnie

Moritz is a German name. I knew a very sweet little boy with that name and always thought how nice it was. I don’t get why everyone on here hates it?!

That's fine if you have a German background or live in Germany. If the baby is going to grow up in the UK, people will assume he's been named after St. Moritz and cringe and the utter pretentiousness of it!

Paralithic · 27/05/2021 21:40

Congratulations!

I was wondering if your DH had been watching Walter Presents on Channel 4, Moritz Stamm was a character in Deutschland 83.

I like the Thomas Frederick combination - he can then choose to be a Thomas, Tom, Tommy, Frederick, Fred, Freddie etc.

Ellmau · 27/05/2021 23:16

Congratulations on the safe arrival of baby X!

I vote Thomas, I think it goes the best with your surname.

Ridiculous idea for a name..

lottiegarbanzo · 28/05/2021 09:31

Frederick Walter.

Sandsnake · 28/05/2021 09:38

Congratulations! My favourite is Frederick and then Thomas. Not Walter - for me it’s very wet sounding. ‘Walt’ makes me think of Disney, which I don’t think has great connotations.

But like pps said, bollocks to your husband’s deadline. You’ve just had a baby. There’s really no need to rush. Very many congratulations again and welcome to the world little boy!

bitheby · 28/05/2021 09:59

Thomas Walter.

For me Frederick as a middle name and 'Rutherford' don't scan. Thomas Walter 'Rutherford' seems better syllable wise.

PS I live in Wales and just checked my Facebook friends list and counted 14 men called Tomos with that spelling who are friends of friends and another few with it as a surname.

MyHusbandTheIdiot · 28/05/2021 10:04

Thomas! By a country mile (several of them in fact)

If not that, then Frederick.

GertrudeKerfuffle · 28/05/2021 10:25

Moritz reminds me of Balonz, probably the z at the end (Mumsnet classic thread if you don't know it!) For Christ's sake don't tell your DH about Balonz, he will probably decide that's his favourite name ShockGrin

Serpenta · 28/05/2021 10:46

Congratulations on the arrival of Not Moritz! I bet he's a beaut Flowers

Tom Rutherford is a good solid name that no man or boy would ever be ashamed of.

HerMammy · 28/05/2021 13:15

Congratulation!!
Welcome Thomas Moritz 👩🏻‍🍼

Horehound · 28/05/2021 13:17

Nope and it's not just up to your husband...

Horehound · 28/05/2021 13:19

Thomas! Congratulations :)

Tal45 · 28/05/2021 13:42

Thomas Frederick Rutherford. Perfect IMO.

reallyalurker · 28/05/2021 21:45

Congratulations! Thomas, Frederick, Walter, in that order. Other suggestions: Isaac, Roderick, Edmund, Alasdair.

xprincessxjanetx · 28/05/2021 23:10

Sorry but I really dislike the name

Estasala · 29/05/2021 01:44

@mogtheexcellent

Many congratulations. I'm glad you get to make the final call. Also glad I read the thread before posting as was going to say that it should be your choice since his ideas are so wacky.

I had the same with my DH who wanted zebedee. We have a five sylable surname Hmm. Whatever you do don't mention zebedee to your DH as he will probably like it.

Of the names you list I like Frederick (Freddie) best, Aassuming you wont be using Frederick in full across a packed soft play.

🤣
Estasala · 29/05/2021 01:47

I like Frederick but Frederick Rutherford is a bit of a mouthful. Thomas Rutherford sounds lovely. I'm not keen on Walter.

Malteser71 · 29/05/2021 01:49

Just pick Tom.

It’s nice.

Life is too short.

lottiegarbanzo · 29/05/2021 09:30

Freddie Rutherford is lovely.

Frederick would become 'Fred-rick' if someone was reading out names in a hurry, like reading down a register and scans better that way.

Thomas is nice but it is so over-used at the moment (and has been for some time) that it just sounds like 'generic boy name', the way John once did. John would be a far more interesting and unusual now. (Not John Thomas though!).

lottiegarbanzo · 29/05/2021 09:33

Or you could just go for Augustus, or Maximillian.

Anyway, congratulations and enjoy him Flowers
