Hi thanks for reading! Basically I’ve been really struggle to think o FB a girls name, I just can’t settle on anything and nothing feels right! And a few days ago I heard the name Ottilie (shortened to ottie) and I love it, it’s the only name so far I really love tbh. My only problems are I’m worried it’s slightly pretentious or too ‘out there’, what do you think? I’m not usually a massive fan of really unusual names and don’t want to sound like I’m trying too hard! Any feedback is appreciated... thanks x

Yeah, I agree it's pretentious. Sorry!

ForkHandlesplease · 03/05/2020 10:09

I love it. But i love Anastasia , too

CheriLittlebottom · 03/05/2020 10:12

I like it. Unusual but I don't class it as pretentious.

Pingolo · 03/05/2020 10:13

It's ok but what would the nickname be? Ottie?

JKScot4 · 03/05/2020 10:14

I like it, have to laugh at anyone saying it’s pretentious when half of MN are calling their DC old lady names, which IS pretentious 🤣

Ellierose4321 · 03/05/2020 10:16

Pingolo, yes Ottie! I love ottie and would use it alone if it wasn’t for my BF claiming it’s not a ‘real name’!

Old lady names aren't pretentious, they're just awful. All these poor little girls called horrible names like Maud and Mabel - bleugh!

CheriLittlebottom · 03/05/2020 10:19

Naming fashions go in cycles. 'Old lady' names are now in fashion, why is it pretentious to call your child Ivy or Alfred?

All those old people were young people first, you know! When the 80s kids are old will Jane, Emily and Lucy be pretentious?

I was tempted by Persephone... Now that's pretentious Grin.

wheresmymojo · 03/05/2020 10:21

It just makes me think of 'like an otter' 🦦

formerbabe · 03/05/2020 10:22

I think its hideous...sorry. I'd cringe so much if I heard it irl and would assume the parents were desperate to show how middle class they were.

toastofthetown · 03/05/2020 10:23

I don’t think it’s too pretentious or unusual at all. It’s climbing the charts at an incredible pace. I know two babies called Ottilie born within a week of each other.

toastofthetown · 03/05/2020 10:24

And both Ottlies go by Ottie!

Whatsyourflava · 03/05/2020 10:24

I really REALLY love it. One of my favourite names and not pretentious at all.
It's getting increasingly popular and mainstream. I would bat an eyelid to hear of a little girl called Ottilie and adore nickname Ottie
It's never that popular on Mumsnet but it's popular in real life - the statistics speak for themselves

Whatsyourflava · 03/05/2020 10:24
  • wouldn't
Megan2018 · 03/05/2020 10:25

Beautiful, it was on our list

CheriLittlebottom · 03/05/2020 10:26

I think this is one that will depend on your social circle, OP.

balonzz · 03/05/2020 10:26

Ottilie is a real name. I like it a lot.

Whatsyourflava · 03/05/2020 10:27

It's number 160 in the name charts. Not at all try hard anyway but by the time the 2020 stats are released it'll be top 150. Lovely name. Beautiful and lots of nickname options

miccymaccy · 03/05/2020 10:29

I also think of otters or utterly butterly Grin

CheriLittlebottom · 03/05/2020 10:33

This is the data for England and Wales.

What do you think of Ottilie?
BigSandyBalls2015 · 03/05/2020 10:35

Bit wanky

Pingolo · 03/05/2020 10:35

I think Tilly would be a nicer nickname. It's not a "pretty" name and is a bit marmite but if you like it then fine.

LolaSmiles · 03/05/2020 10:36

I love it. It's a beautiful name.

Helskitchen · 03/05/2020 10:38

Gorggggeous! My friend has a little Ottilie and she's beautiful so I also have really lovely associations with the name.

YouAndMeAndTheDevilMakesThree · 03/05/2020 10:41

I've only ever seen it on MN, I've never come across one in real life (clearly I'm in the wrong middle class social circles). And I'm not sure how to pronounce Ottilie. Not sure about Ottie as a NN either. So not really a fan I'm afraid!
