What do you think of Ottilie?

Hi thanks for reading! Basically I’ve been really struggle to think o FB a girls name, I just can’t settle on anything and nothing feels right! And a few days ago I heard the name Ottilie (shortened to ottie) and I love it, it’s the only name so far I really love tbh. My only problems are I’m worried it’s slightly pretentious or too ‘out there’, what do you think? I’m not usually a massive fan of really unusual names and don’t want to sound like I’m trying too hard! Any feedback is appreciated... thanks x

I love this name and really really really hoping we can use it when the time comes! Husband dosent like it though

Boogiewoogietoo · 03/05/2020 11:44

3 Ottilies in my DS’ school. Their DMs were all amazed as they thought it was such an unusual name! To be fair, those are the only 3 I’ve met.

lollipoplola · 03/05/2020 11:44

I actually think it depends where you live determines the response to the name. I like Ottilie and where I am it would be well received.

daisypond · 03/05/2020 11:45

Ottoline is better than Ottilie, partly because it is less bandwagon-y and will end up less downmarket. Can’t say I’m keen on that either. Ottie is particularly horrid for both.

Danetobe · 03/05/2020 11:50

Painfully aspirational middle class. It's cute though.

Thefaceofboe · 03/05/2020 11:56

For me Ottilie just doesn’t roll off the tongue right but I really like how it looks written down.

roarfeckingroar · 03/05/2020 11:59

It's my favourite name and I love it but my horrible partner has ruled it out despite me having to grow the baby and him just being there for a fun few minutes at the beginning.

I'm considering a new partner for baby 2 PURELY for this reason

whatausername · 03/05/2020 12:13

I think it's a horrible sound to hear tbh. I also think 'utterly' and 'Ottie' conjures up otters in my head.

MikeUniformMike · 03/05/2020 12:20

Don't like it

LadyGAgain · 03/05/2020 12:27

It's a beautiful name. And I know a lovely wee girl whose NN is Ottie.

Thesearmsofmine · 03/05/2020 12:32

I like it, I know a few Otillies all under the age of 2. It’s popular in the instamum world.

Wolfgirrl · 03/05/2020 12:41

I'm sorry I think it is absolutely hideous. It just reminds me of otters, slimy ponds and wee. Plus it is really twee and pretentious. The nickname Ottie is awful.

TempsPerdu · 03/05/2020 12:47

I’ve come across a couple recently in DD’s toddler classes. Also seems to be a popular choice for ‘mum bloggers’. It’s not dreadful but it is a bit middle class try-hard imo, and I can see it dating. Judging by pp’s comments it’s quite divisive!

Flixsfoilball · 03/05/2020 12:49

It's becoming increasingly popular (I know 3 babies with the name) so not really out there

sauvignonblancplz · 03/05/2020 13:02

@Whatsyourflava

The very one.

DeeCeeCherry · 03/05/2020 13:03

Hmmm would any child want to be nicknamed 'Otter?'

turnandfacethenamechange · 03/05/2020 13:29

Makes me think of pasta shapes

Maybelatte · 03/05/2020 13:32

I love it but DH sadly doesn’t.

2007Millie · 03/05/2020 13:34

Love love love

Kokeshi123 · 03/05/2020 13:45

Makes me think of "otter" and "frilly" at the same time. An otter in a frilly dress maybe.

It's not terrible but I don't understand the love for it on here.

Lulubon · 03/05/2020 13:48

I love the name. My sister was nearly called Ottilie and then I put it on my list. My partner didn't like it but I think it's lovely

Turtlesone · 03/05/2020 14:41

I really don’t like it sorry. It makes me cringe for some reason. But then there are loads of them about now and it’ll be a normal name by the time your baby goes to school

Cosyjimjamsforautumn · 03/05/2020 14:47

Know a toddler named ottilie. Nickname is Tillie :)

87Callista · 03/05/2020 14:48

Tilly with an Oh(ostrich) attached.

I like the O sound at the beginning. Little bit twee. Wouldn't use it. Don't hate it.

Spark27 · 03/05/2020 14:51

I love it. I would use it if thos one turns out to be a girl, but unfortunately DH said no.

I think if you love a name you should go with it, but if your not sure maybe it's not right for you.
