Hi thanks for reading! Basically I’ve been really struggle to think o FB a girls name, I just can’t settle on anything and nothing feels right! And a few days ago I heard the name Ottilie (shortened to ottie) and I love it, it’s the only name so far I really love tbh. My only problems are I’m worried it’s slightly pretentious or too ‘out there’, what do you think? I’m not usually a massive fan of really unusual names and don’t want to sound like I’m trying too hard! Any feedback is appreciated... thanks x

DD2 is Ottilie. She is nearly 20. Never met another one!

Orphlids · 03/05/2020 15:42

I like it. The only pretentious thing about names would be choosing one that you secretly don’t like, but using it anyway because you think it will show you in a certain light. If you love it, and use it, you’re not pretentious - it just appeals to you.

I love it and it's on our list this time, I like nn ottie but husband isn't sure so thought nn lottie otherwise

LotusClover · 03/05/2020 16:06

How is it pronounced?

o-ti-lee?
o-tuh-lee?
ot-lee?

And which syllable is stressed?

It looks lovely written down but I wouldn't have a clue how to pronounce it.

Ninkanink · 03/05/2020 16:08

I like it a lot. I don’t consider it pretentious at all. Tilly is a nice nickname too.

Sb131216 · 03/05/2020 16:55

I would pronounce it O-ti-lee

peperethecat · 03/05/2020 17:01

Really dislike it.

Danglingmod · 03/05/2020 17:06

It is really popular now. I know quite a few toddlers/babies.

I also know two teenage Ottilies but I think it was much less common then.

I like it but it kind of is this year's Isla... The name that everyone thinks they're being unique using.

Lifeaback · 03/05/2020 17:10

I think it’s a beautiful name OP. It’s one of those names that is ‘cute’ on a baby/little girl but is also a classy name on an adult.

There’s always going to be someone who thinks your choice of name is either pretentious and ‘out there’ or too plain and boring. Once the name is attached to a real person though this soon stops being the case!

ZebraKid71 · 03/05/2020 17:15

My best friend is a 33 year old ottilie (exceptionally posh etonian family) , id never heard of another until the past few years when I hear it pop up fairly regularly at baby groups. There is one at my dds nursery who gets Ollie for short which I much prefer to Ottie.

PetraRabbit · 03/05/2020 17:18

Quite a popular name. I'd say it will be considered in the future to be quite typical of the decade. A similar name is Clementine (Clemmie).

WhereYouLeftIt · 03/05/2020 17:18

I think it's a lovely name.

Sb131216 · 03/05/2020 17:40

I'm not sure I can imagine getting as popular as isla..but I also think it depends on your area as to how many you know also.
Maybe I'll be proven wrong.. I can see it building up the ranks but would be very surprised if it gets to be the new Ava/Isla/Olivia etc.

Danglingmod · 03/05/2020 17:44

Yeah, I didn't necessarily mean it will be as popular as Isla, just that parents of Ottilies seem to be as surprised as parents of Islas that other people have picked it.

Ds is 19 and the equivalent girls' name when he was born was Freya... Every Freya we knew's parents thought they would be the only one!

maria860 · 03/05/2020 18:01

I don't like it at all sorry

NewHorizons2020 · 03/05/2020 18:03

I love the name but it has been tarnished forever by the Sellers of Daughters on instagram, sorry.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 03/05/2020 18:04

not sure how you are pronouncing it but sounds too similar to Utterly for me

justanotherneighinparadise · 03/05/2020 18:04

Honestly hate it.

smokescreen · 03/05/2020 18:11

No

Wifeofbikerviking · 03/05/2020 18:17

I'd probably not as theres a lot of ottilies recently. If I was ottilie I'm guessing nickname would be tilly?
Tilly is a much nicer name in my opinion

Fisher1008 · 03/05/2020 18:39

I love Ottilie and Ottie, I heard it first from the bloggers mother & father of daughters! So cute, I also like Delilah their other twin.

Some other names I like that are similarish in style Ada, Etta & Clementine

Viviennemary · 03/05/2020 18:40

Not keen. It's a bit twee.

missmouse101 · 03/05/2020 18:59

Otterly is just how it sounds to me and therefore a bit odd. I think there are far nicer names.

caramac04 · 03/05/2020 19:03

I really like it. Love Ottie and Lottie too.

Spirali · 03/05/2020 19:21

I love it personally!
