What do you think of Ottilie?

Hi thanks for reading! Basically I’ve been really struggle to think o FB a girls name, I just can’t settle on anything and nothing feels right! And a few days ago I heard the name Ottilie (shortened to ottie) and I love it, it’s the only name so far I really love tbh. My only problems are I’m worried it’s slightly pretentious or too ‘out there’, what do you think? I’m not usually a massive fan of really unusual names and don’t want to sound like I’m trying too hard! Any feedback is appreciated... thanks x

it's pretty, but as PP said, would depend on your social circles. Imagine shouting it out in ...Farmfoods, or Asda or Waitrose?

Hippopotas · 03/05/2020 19:29

Makes me think of otters

zscaler · 03/05/2020 19:30

I think it’s very pretty. It definitely has a kind of aspirational middle class association but tbh I don’t think anyone should pay too much attention to things like that if it’s a name they love.

MaryHill · 03/05/2020 19:33

Ottillie has alwas been a bit of an Oddity to me.

startswithanL · 03/05/2020 19:43

Love it!!

Screenburn · 04/05/2020 01:39

Sorry OP, I know it’s an old name but to me it’s so jarring that it sounds made up - like someone took the name Natalie and tried to make it yooneek by replacing the Nat with an Ott. Confused

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 04/05/2020 07:32

It's a bit much tbh....

JoanieCash · 04/05/2020 07:36

I know a 10 year old Tilly who is really an Ottilie. It’s a nice variant on Matilda in that regard.

Sarcelle · 04/05/2020 07:42

I heard a dad call out to his daughter with that name last summer. It sounded very try hard. He called out to his son as well with an equally pretentious name but I have forgotten what it was.

It's the same as all those parents naming their kids Skye, Summer and Sienna thinking they were so different when they are becoming a generations equivalent of Sharon, Karen, Gary and Jamie.

Mrstwiddle · 04/05/2020 07:42

Too try hard and the nickname is too twee. Someone mentioned Clementine which is a similar style but more grown up.

toughgetsgoing · 04/05/2020 09:46

cute, you need to be smart to use it horsey or goes to boarding school .. bit twee though honestly not sure it's a name that 'suits' all personalities like others do more.. the ott bit at the start maybe. But its better than a chav name or a name thats overly trendy ending with an a

MaMaMyCorona · 04/05/2020 09:54

I strongly dislike it

whiskeylullaby2 · 04/05/2020 09:55

I love it, nearly chose it myself. But I have a lot of American friends. Sounded awful with an American accent now stuck saying it with the accent on my head

Toddlerteaplease · 04/05/2020 10:01

Love it!

SunbathingDragon · 04/05/2020 10:06

I know four and all are under five. I suspect it will continue to increase in popularity and become a defining name of its generation, much in the way you can roughly tell how old someone called Michelle or Sharon is.

Catherine1210 · 04/05/2020 10:26

I think it’s a lovely name but very popular right now, I personally know two people who have given birth in the last 6 months and named their baby Ottilie. So expect it to be not so unusual in future x

Ellierose4321 · 05/05/2020 23:03

Thankyou so much for all the input! Seems to have pretty much split opinions! My only other choices are Hattie (Harriet) and Piper. Does anyone prefer either of these? X

Viviennemary · 06/05/2020 00:12

Piper is absolutely dreadful. Not mad on Harriet but it's a perfectly ok name.

Ninkanink · 06/05/2020 00:14

Ottilie is much, much nicer than either of those. Although I do kind of like piper, but only in a vague way.

Megan2018 · 06/05/2020 02:53

Harriet was on our list, it’s a fab name.
Piper is ok but not as nice as Ottilie and Harriet.

Silveroriole · 06/05/2020 06:23

My eccentric great-aunts had a sofa with a large dip at one end that was known as Aunt Ottilie's Hole. They were born in the 1880s, I think, so Aunt A would have been even older. The name is certainly due for revival! It's lovely.

daisypond · 06/05/2020 06:35

Harriet is much nicer than Ottilie and Piper. It’s not my personal style but is lots classier than both of those.

Zoflorabore · 06/05/2020 06:38

My late dgm ( born 1928 in Germany ) had a mum called Ottie and also her elder sister was too and I’ve always liked the name.

I’ve never heard it used here at all.

Millie2013 · 06/05/2020 06:45

I really like it, DD has a friend called Ottilie
(My dearly departed Dad used to refer to her as Ottilie Butterly though)

GRW · 06/05/2020 07:30

It's ok but I know an Otilia which I prefer.
