Surname and middle name are both one syllable so we want at least a two syllable name (middle name will be John).

Names I love that have been vetoed:

Raphael / Rafael nn Rafi (my absolute favorite but DW thinks it’s pretentious)

Jago (too ‘nicknamey’)

Rohan (Too ‘wet’)

Milo (Nestle milk)

Oscar (she had a fish called Oscar)

Tobias nn Toby (just doesn’t like it)

Names she likes that I don’t:

Rhodri
Ezra
Jonah
Sebastian

We can’t use a name beginning with El as it would be too matchy matchy with our DD which is a shame as we both like Elijah, Elliot and Ellis

Other names we both like but can’t use as they already belong to close friends or cousins are Arlo, Issac, Theo and Reuben

There is one name neither of us dislike (Jacob) but neither of us love it either. Please wise Mumsnetters there must be a name we haven't thought of yet??!

Wilfred
Wilbur
Benedict
Edward
Gulliver
Hamish
Jasper
Mikka

Pieceofpurplesky · 05/11/2019 10:43

Edward John nn Ned
Christopher nn Kit
Zachary

Scarlett555 · 05/11/2019 10:54

Jasper had come up a lot..! I love it but DW is less keen. Jasper John is very cool.

How about Casper then if not Jasper?
There's also Joss short for Josiah? With John, the longer name works better thinking about it

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 05/11/2019 13:29

What about Jonty? (Usually a nickname for Jonathan, might be worth having that on birth certificate incase Jonty is too cutsy/posh for his adult career choice.)

Benedict as an alternative long name for Ben?

Alexander/Zander
Arthur/Artie
Hugo
Russel
Edward/Teddy

Please don't discount names you love for fear of bullying for an usual name, this isn't something that happens in the same way in this generation where there's such a wide range of names.

sometimesalways · 05/11/2019 13:55

I rather like Colin!
But I think it's fallen out of fashion a bit. But would fit your criteria I think?

sometimesalways · 05/11/2019 13:56

Oh also Alfred/Alfie?

Scarlett555 · 05/11/2019 14:21

Thanks so much everyone! Sorry I know we are really fussy so will address names that have been suggested a lot:

Casper... makes me think of the friendly ghost.

I do like Jonathan / Jonty but middle name is definitely going to be John so that won't work.

Lennon is a fabulous name! Could we really use it with John as a middle name though??

Reuben and Theo- love them both but belong to close friend's kids

Can't use Alfred / Alfie as it belongs to an awful person we know and dislike!

Really like Benedict but DW says it makes her think of eggs and the Pope.

Hugo is a bit posh for us.

Otis makes me think aardvark or being in a lift.

Otto makes me think otter

All the one syllable ones won't work with John and our surname - for example 'Jude John Jones' just doesn't work although Jude is a great name.

Edward, Alexander, Colin, Christopher, Philip, Daniel, William, Richard, David are lovely, classic names but sound a bit dated to use now as mainly belong to men in their 30s

Liam, Aiden, Charlie, Felix all great suggestions. Just not the one.

I think Albert / Albie is gorgeous but DW thinks it's an old man name

OP posts:
LarkDescending · 05/11/2019 14:25

Please don't do Lennon John!

Leo perhaps? Sorry if already covered.

LarkDescending · 05/11/2019 14:26

Or Adam, Edmund?

LarkDescending · 05/11/2019 14:27

Rufus? I am probably covering old ground.

Leopardprintboots · 05/11/2019 14:28

Clarence?
Laurence (nn Laurie) classic name but rare
Rupert
Seth
If you like Arlo how about Milo or Miles with nickname Milo?

BaronessBomburst · 05/11/2019 14:36

If Arlo and Milo aren't quite right, how about Arno (popular Dutch name) or Bruno?

FizzyGreenWater · 05/11/2019 14:41

Gosh no Lennon is awful, don't!

Hugo's not posh at all! Becoming more popular and it's lovely.

Colin's not an 80s name really - peaked earlier, so I reckon will be coming back sooner than the others you mention.

How about Magnus?

FizzyGreenWater · 05/11/2019 14:46

Oh! Another R one - how about Roderick, Roddy for short?

sprunk · 05/11/2019 14:48

Nathaniel?

Leopardprintboots · 05/11/2019 14:55

Colin too like Colon

Hugo is lovely and not reserved for posh people anymore. Same with Rupert

Skyejuly · 05/11/2019 15:01

Mason
Farron
Levi
Nicholas
James
Ryan
Charlie
Monty

suspended · 05/11/2019 15:16

Felix?

suspended · 05/11/2019 15:17

Bruno?

suspended · 05/11/2019 15:18

Arlo is quite common these days. There's a few in DD's class. And 2 friends with baby arlo's.

Otto is similar but different?

Lowen?

Pippilangstrumpfi · 05/11/2019 15:45

I agree that names like Hugo, Rupert, Sebastian, Quentin are no longer 'reserved' for any class. They're for everyone!

Skyejuly · 05/11/2019 15:54

Levison?
Duncan?
Morris
Trevor
Bleu

Scarlett555 · 05/11/2019 16:40

I like Lowen!!! I do like Cornish names. Lowen John

Awaiting DW's thoughts but that is a great one thank you suspended
