Stan or Percy

We both like both names but I prefer Percy. Dh also likes Arthur but I know a few adult ones and it’s puts me off.

Am open to suggestions for names you think I’d like, this is my 7th baby!

All have traditional/old fashioned names and oldest two are in top ten, two are less common and two are names that aren’t common at all but are still proper names.

Dh says my name style is 1920s peaky blinder style names Grin I can see what he means, old fashioned working class kind of names.

It's not wrong to be purposely judgemental and hurt peoples feelings?? Really?

Kiddofreddo80 · 06/09/2019 22:16

Can’t lie, I completely agree with you OP

Cbeebiesrehab · 06/09/2019 22:27

kiki she didn’t actually say anything negative about those names! All she said was she wouldn’t listen to someone’s opinion who has very different taste to her own.

30not13 · 06/09/2019 22:28

Percy is just so... feeble. Wet and weak.

Stan is much better as is Kai

ThatCurlyGirl · 06/09/2019 22:33

my children aren’t the the type to be teased

This made me feel pretty sad, as if some kids are naturally bullying fodder and others aren't.

kiki22 · 06/09/2019 22:34

That's what she ment the names shite so I wouldn't listen to anyone with such poor taste. Anyone with any emotional maturity and manners can understand that you shouldn't comment on these things unasked.

Also anyone that ment no harm says I apologise I ment no harm not I'm not sorry I hurt your feelings. Kindness in words is something sorely missing on this site.

MildThing · 06/09/2019 22:35

I like Stan / Stanley.

Reggie
Linus
Gus
Frankie (Shame about your cat£

I think we all know what types of kids would be bullied and other types of kids who wouldn’t. Sad but true

OooErMissus · 06/09/2019 22:41

Kiki - I think you do have to accept that some people really won't like your name choice.

The OP didn't say the name was 'shite', just that its an example of a name that's not to her taste.

I would never ask for opinions on my DS's name as I know it's not to a lot of people's taste - but that's OK. We like it, and it is DS.

You didn't have to own up to having a Kai. You could've just eye-rolled and moved on.

I have seem people slate DS's name on here - I would never stop people sharing their personal opinion on the basis that it's my DS's name.

Even if I told them off for being mean, I can't control their thoughts, and actually stop them from not liking it. Grin

There is NO universally-liked name, so as long as you like, and your DC is happy with it, you need to make your peace with the fact that other people don't like it.

TildaTurnip · 06/09/2019 22:47

My opinion definitely won’t matter to you as I really dislike any names like Stan, Arthur, Sid etc as they’re miserable sounding to me (I like classic names such as Henry, Edward, Thomas, William, Joseph...so you’d find my tastes boring I think). However, I am still compelled to add my voice to those trying to make you think twice about Percy. It’s awful. ‘Point Percy at the Porcelain’ isn’t a niche saying. You may not have heard of it but that does not mean it’s not a known phrase by many.

CherryValance · 06/09/2019 22:49

I prefer Stan.

You might like Ronnie?

Marshamello · 06/09/2019 22:53

I don't understand why the OP has come on here to get opinions if they're not interested

Gummybearsy · 06/09/2019 22:54

I understand the op. My dc's names have been criticised on Mumsnet. However, I would expect posters with different tastes to mine to dislike my choices. Because I wouldn't like their tastes or choices!

In other words, a random stranger's opinion doesn't count much without knowing their tastes of style.

kiki22 · 06/09/2019 22:56

@OooErMissus it's not about taste it's about being kind. Everyone that said horrid awful are not being constructive they don't help the OP. People giving alternatives helps I gave a name from the time the OP likes that personally I don't like. I don't have to have the same choices as the OP to recognise the theme she is going for and giving an option. I didn't come on judging and I am sick to death of having to accept people acting like assholes on here and hiding behind well that's my opinion.

I didn't ask for peoples thoughts on my children's names if someone doesn't like it ok but let's not pretend the OP was just mentioning a couple of names she isn't keen on she being mean we all know what Jayden and Kai mean on here.

OP if you like peaky blinder working class names how about you get some working class manners and don't be a dick to people and show some respect. I'm sure you have seen it's a theme with the working class.

Passtherioja · 06/09/2019 23:00

Stan!!💕

OooErMissus · 06/09/2019 23:02

Fair enough kiki - and I really like your last paragraph!

joystir59 · 07/09/2019 04:22

Surely Percy is shortened version of Percival, which is a nauseating name.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 07/09/2019 05:12

You just can't name a child Percy. Stan is also not great but would be my preference

Tweetingmagpie · 07/09/2019 09:20

Chocolatedaim · 07/09/2019 09:28

This is a very interesting thread 😳

I much prefer Stan/Stanley.
Percy was on my list but DH put me off when he revealed the vulgar saying, “point Percy at the porcelain”.

We also liked Sid/Sidney but a close friend (who had their baby before us) named their little boy Sidney George.

We went with Gabriel in the end 😊

Bingbangbong89 · 07/09/2019 10:09

Oh Kiki get a grip
Meow the cat has claws!
Got to hand it to you OP, this is one of the more interesting name threads. Normally it’s just ‘what should I go for: Olivia or Amelia?’ And it’s all a bit vanilla

Malvinaa81 · 07/09/2019 19:09

They do sound rather 100 years ago names, but if that is what you are aiming for....

Gummybearsy · 07/09/2019 20:41

Don't names go in cycles and become popular after about 100 years?

MissHenty · 09/09/2019 17:59

I’ve found this thread interesting too!

I still vote Percy btw. Couldn’t care less about that random phrase that no kid will have heard of.

There’s a “Woody” at my sons school btw. Never been teased that I know of.

Lots of Williams. Will. Willy! Never been teased.

Yet Abi is teased all the time and is called Abi National Bank.

You can never predict what kids will latch on to
