Stan or Percy

We both like both names but I prefer Percy. Dh also likes Arthur but I know a few adult ones and it’s puts me off.

Am open to suggestions for names you think I’d like, this is my 7th baby!

All have traditional/old fashioned names and oldest two are in top ten, two are less common and two are names that aren’t common at all but are still proper names.

Dh says my name style is 1920s peaky blinder style names Grin I can see what he means, old fashioned working class kind of names.

Well if a slang word for penis and Percy Pig don't put you off, it sounds like the poor child is doomed to be a Percy. My DGC have a lovely book about a Stan and Mabel (a dog and cat). I think the names go well together.

Tweetingmagpie · 06/09/2019 18:52

A slang word for penis that absolutely no one actually uses Grin and I dont shop at m&s as I dont eat ready meals and I’m not an old lady Grin

He’s actually more likely to be Stan butbyes I like the name Percy hence why I started a thread Confused

I wonder what your children’s names are?

20 years ago I’d have agreed with some of these comment but honestly Percy would not stand out nowadays

I agree that when I was little (30 years ago) Percy could potentially have got teased. But no way now

Chottie · 06/09/2019 19:02

OP Please not Percy, you may love the name, but think of your child.......

pooopypants · 06/09/2019 19:06

Please don't use either

Tweetingmagpie · 06/09/2019 19:16

I agree @MissHenty, same goes for names like Ethel, depends on where you live too, in my village in West Sussex the last few babies were called Alfred, Arthur Sidney, Pearl and Ethel.

Both Arthur and Stan are much better than Percy. Percy means penis here. Ever heard of point Percy at the porcelain?

Tweetingmagpie · 06/09/2019 19:18

I’m not worried about teasing whatever my child’s called, my children aren’t the the type to be teased and have far too many siblings to be worried about being picked on!

No Kublai only a couple of times on mumsnet, how old are you because I think it’s an older persons thing? Or regional?

Stanley is really cute! Percy really, really bad!

MissHenty · 06/09/2019 19:48

Never heard of “pointing Percy”

Seen as over 100 babies are being named Percy each year now it’s clearly not an association that’s made any longer

tommycockles · 06/09/2019 19:48

Point Percy at the Porcelain.

I've heard it but not in years.

I don't think any child could carry it off though.
I know a 2 year old Stan. Can't say I'm overly keen but it's an easier name to the ear.

Any other contenders?

Cbeebiesrehab · 06/09/2019 19:52

Never heard Percy as a word for penis. I think MN has some quite niche references sometimes. There is another name that posters always say reminds them of penis too (that I’ve never heard of?) is it Ralph?? Ralph is a good name too actuallyGrin

annoyedandstressed · 06/09/2019 19:53

Stanley James was one of my ideas for DS

AMidsummersNightsNightmare · 06/09/2019 19:53

Percy is gorgeous

joystir59 · 06/09/2019 19:55

Percy is bloody nasty! Arthur is great

littlemeitslyn · 06/09/2019 19:56

My cat is Stan 😸

joystir59 · 06/09/2019 19:56

Penis as in 'pointing Percy at the porcelain'.

kiki22 · 06/09/2019 20:01

What about Cornelius Con or Neil or Neily common miner name from early 1900's to late 30'sin our family. I think percy wesley and stan shunpike from HP

BestBeforeYesterday · 06/09/2019 20:06

I know a little Percy. Horrible name.
Stan is okay.

villainousbroodmare · 06/09/2019 20:09

Stan. Percy is woeful imo.

noitsachicken · 06/09/2019 20:13

Both are terrible, Stanly less so.
There is a Percy in a music group we go to, I cringe every time, truly awful name. Feel v sorry for the child

MissHenty · 06/09/2019 20:19

@Cbeebiesrehab yes it’s Ralph. Over the years I’ve seen many MNetters told not to use Ralph because of Judy Bloom books. I bet they regret not using it. It’s a gorgeous name and top 100 now

Same with Albert a few years ago. People on MN thought it was a wild name! It’s totally mainstream now. I wonder how many people got put off that name unnecessarily

Tweetingmagpie · 06/09/2019 20:21

I feel like on baby name threads you should add your own children’s names so. I can decide whether to listen to your opinion or not Grin if someone’s telling me my choices are awful but their kids are called Jayden and Kai then I’d know not to listen to them Grin we all have different tastes at the end of the day.

I think it will be Stan, I’m just not sure about Stanley but I suppose just Stan is weird, my brother is called Sam, just Sam and when he was naughty at school the teacher would call him Samuel and he hated it, he was just Sam! Same with my cousin, he was joe, just joe!not Joseph!
