Stan or Percy

We both like both names but I prefer Percy. Dh also likes Arthur but I know a few adult ones and it’s puts me off.

Am open to suggestions for names you think I’d like, this is my 7th baby!

All have traditional/old fashioned names and oldest two are in top ten, two are less common and two are names that aren’t common at all but are still proper names.

Dh says my name style is 1920s peaky blinder style names Grin I can see what he means, old fashioned working class kind of names.

Not keen on any of these names tbh, Peaky Blinders is so overrated anyway. If you must - have a Thomas at least.

Laughing at the thought of a baby called Malcolm.Grin

Google Percy Montgomery. He used to play rugby for South Africa and he's rather gorgeous...that's how I picture Percy. Grin

Baguetteaboutit · 06/09/2019 16:02

Percy is the kind of name you only lumber a child with on the promise that the grandparents will pay the school fees.

Cbeebiesrehab · 06/09/2019 16:03

Love Percy and Stan! Other names I class as a similar style:

Rupert
Arthur
Wilfred
Ted
Frank
Fred
Bertie
Walter

Wallywobbles · 06/09/2019 16:03

Percy = dick here too. Not keen on Stan either though.

mynameisMrG · 06/09/2019 16:07

I love Percy but DH doesn’t. I have an Arthur and also love Edward, Charlie, Freddie and Harold. Not so keen on Stan.

MissHenty · 06/09/2019 16:08

@imalrightjack “there’s a reason no one uses the name Percy”

Errr ok well 107 babies in the UK were named Percy last year. It’s defin having a resurgence (albeit not being anywhere near the top 10 yet)

I love it. Fits right in with all the Archie and Arthur type names but is a bit different

Go for it

Pinkblueberry · 06/09/2019 16:09

Neither Stan or Percy sound very Peaky Bilnders to me Confused they’re both pretty awful, sorry. I don’t think it’s comeback time for either.

PuppyMonkey · 06/09/2019 16:47

Here’s Stan now Grin

I like frank but it’s my dogs name! I thought I’d finished with babies when I named him!

Kiddofreddo80 · 06/09/2019 16:59

I love Percy!
Stan is horrible. Makes me imagine a lonely fat man who has never had a girlfriend and whose only hobby is trainspotting...

keiratwiceknightly · 06/09/2019 17:05

Point Percy at the porcelain...

I prefer Stan.

Tweetingmagpie · 06/09/2019 17:07

Lol some of these descriptions are very detailed! We need another thread!

It seems about even.

If it makes any difference I’d like it to go with his sisters name which is Mabel. As I said I have other children but there’s a large ish age gap between my first 5 and number 6 and there will only be a year between these two.

So Mabel and Stan,

Or,

Mabel and Percy?

mumofadoodle · 06/09/2019 17:10

I much prefer Stan to Percy, but don't absolutely hate Percy either.

My son's name will be completely out there and people will have something to say about it but then all children grow into their names Grin

These names were all top 50 during the 1920s

Jasper
Silas
Samson
Albert
Harvey
Lenny (Leonard)
Ralph
Wilf (Wilfred)
Chester

MissHenty · 06/09/2019 17:30

I personally wouldn’t worry if Mabel and Stan sound better than Mabel and Percy or vice versa. Once they’re a bit older their names will mostly be used on their own anyway plus you have other children. Just pick the name you prefer

Answerthequestion · 06/09/2019 17:35

They are both just awful.

Frith2013 · 06/09/2019 17:36

I used to read a book from the Thomas the Tank Engine series to my younger brother. The high point was the line “Pooo, Percy!”

So it’s a no from me.

NameChange30 · 06/09/2019 17:38

Neither.
Ray (for Raymond) is the only old man name that I like.
Arthur is ok.

ZiggyB · 06/09/2019 17:42

Wilf

AngelaScandal · 06/09/2019 17:43

First thoughts green engine

Lindtnotlint · 06/09/2019 17:44

You can’t use Percy. It’s comparable to calling your boy Dick.

RuthW · 06/09/2019 17:57

Percy unless the full name would be Stanley.

Tweetingmagpie · 06/09/2019 18:25

I think the Percy /penis thing is an old person thing or maybe regional because I have never heard of it except for on mumsnet 🤣
