All 3 of my DCs names have been mentioned here BTW.

TBH, I’d feel quite let down by MN if they weren’t. Also DH’s name - but then I don’t really like that one either.

@SantasLittleMonkeyButler I know Grin
And who knew that Corbynmania got merged with Kardashianmania across the pond resulting in Korbin.

Endless fun of US Baby name boards

I think civilisation is doomed when people think names like Oliver, Thomas or Edward are bad names.

WTAF is wrong with a normal, solid name that's been in CONSTANT use since the dawn of names?

Call your kid what you want...but be prepared to dry their tears when they get bullied at school, passed over for jobs etc in later life because you wanted to make up a name for them.

There is a BIG difference between a ‘made up’ name and an interesting classic underused name.

Perhaps people dislike Oliver and Thomas because they know so many so that their names no longer sufficiently identify them? Or they find the names a little dull through overuse?

Dustbunny1900 · 15/11/2017 13:46

It's because Edward, Thomas (Oliver is just trendy right now, in the past it was more underused classic) is the beige of baby names.if it was a flavor, it would be vanilla (or water flavored). Theyre overused, uninspired, unimaginative, lazy, and boring to some. Although I totally get it if he's named after a relative.

And no I didn't make my kids name up, my oldest has a name in the top ten recently (dammit) , and my name is the epitome of boring.

Itsallfuckery · 15/11/2017 13:53

Anything hyphenated. Anything in the top 10. Anything chavvy.

pipilangstrumpf · 15/11/2017 13:55

Nobody said that Thomas, Edward or Oliver are ‘bad’. They’re just boring and overused. My ds has 3 Olivers in his class, two of which share the same surname initials.

MyWhatICallNameChange · 15/11/2017 14:00

Disappointed I've only got 3 out of my 5 children's names on here.

I don't hate any names. There's names I wouldn't choose myself - I like unusual so wonder why people name their children Jack or Oliver when it means they'll probably always be known as Jack A etc at school. Probably my own hang up of being one of many in my class! The boringness of the 70s when there only seemed to be 5 names in use!

But they're all nice enough names. I wouldn't judge anyone by their name either. After all, I have faced much much judginess from MN because my poor eldest child is Jayden.

Murine · 15/11/2017 18:43

My name and DD2s have been mentioned, and DD2's middle name is getting so much hate Sad

KatieKookaburra26 · 16/11/2017 20:09

I don’t mind these types of threads, I understand that everyone has different taste. However saying names like Edward (Ds2’s name) and Thomas are overused, uninspired, unimaginative, lazy and boring is a little bit harsh.

Geano · 27/12/2017 17:54

Jamie - because I didn't get on with a lad at school with that name

Alisvolatpropiis · 29/12/2017 09:58

Caitlyn
Llinos
Betsan
Amelia
Annabelle
Mia
Ethel
Sarah
Sophie

Jack
Jake
Jamie
Stanley
Kyle
Hamish

Of the above lists, some i don’t like because I don’t like the sound, others I don’t like because they’re so very overused.

Rhynswynd · 29/12/2017 10:08

Brian- because when I say it my face does an automatic sneer for no reason

Jeffrey/Geoffrey- for some reason, any man I dislike and don't know the name if gets called by this name. Sometimes I use it out of spite for men I hate and do know their name.

Louise- because my evil MIL tried to demand I use it as middle name for my DD as it was her family tradition. Nope bitch. Not happening.
