So, it turns out that Calliope is pronounced kah-ly-ah-pee - I just assumed is was "cally-ope" and was thinking, what an odd name to give someone Blush

Any others?

Saoirse can also be pronounced Sor-sha. (I'm from an Irish family full of crazy Gaelic names!). I also first read Hermione as her-me-own. Calliope and Persephone I've always got right.

Naomi - nay-oh-mee. Personally can't stand it when people say ny-oh-mee.

I once lived with a Keira who pronounced her name ky-ra.

Other (also Gaelic) names in my family which have often stumped people are Máire (which we pronounce more-a), Mhairi - Var-ee, Caiomhe - Kee-va.

These days if I'm stumped by a name it's usually because the parents, wanting to be trendy, have taken a fairly ordinary name and given it some ridiculous spelling!

lostlala that reminds me of a colleague of mine who had read the name Persephone, having never heard or seen it before. She said, in all seriousness, "Purse-phone, why the hell would you call your child that?" "What's her sister called? Keys-fags? Is it to remind her mum what not to forget when leaving the house?"

The Caoimhe I know is kwee-va. I think they're both acceptable pronunciations aren't they? I love the name. Smile It's like Esme though, two pronunciations, both widely used.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 18/06/2015 14:37

Is Caiomhe pronounced Kee-va?

I know of a little one (about 6 months old), pronounced Kee-vee - so had assumed that was right Confused.

I think it's kwee-va if it's got a fáda (the little accent thing above the i) so if the name is spelt Caíomhe then it's kwee-va, without it (Caiomhe) there's no w sound.

Don't think it's traditionally pronounced kee-vee though...

I have trouble with Maeve and Anais. Is it Mayve to rhyme with wave? And is it Annay, Annayse or Ann-eye-ees?

OwlAtEase · 18/06/2015 15:35

Well this thread has been a revelation. I was sure Calliope was pronounced Cally-ope.

Mairead always confuses me too. And I have no idea about Anais.

00100001 · 18/06/2015 15:53

Yes, Maeve thymes with wave

Anais - Ann-ace

I didn't know that about Calliope! I always thought of it as call-ee-OH-pee!

It is Confused

Penelope, Persephone, all those classical Greek names work the same way.

Sophronia · 18/06/2015 16:09

Calliope is ka-LY-oh-pee, like Hermione is her-MY-oh-nee

quesadillas · 18/06/2015 16:15

Isn't Mairead like Marayd?

FernGullysWoollyPully · 18/06/2015 16:17

My 1 wk old DS is called Eli which we pronounce "Ee-lie" (which I think is right!) but I've just had a card from an old friend which is pink and says "Baby Girl" on the front so she must have been thinking "Ellie". It's made my day tbh Wink
