So, it turns out that Calliope is pronounced kah-ly-ah-pee - I just assumed is was "cally-ope" and was thinking, what an odd name to give someone Blush

Any others?

EllenJanethickerknickers · 19/06/2015 18:58

Saul, I know, really. But Daphnay was too good to miss. Grin

iloveport · 19/06/2015 19:02

brilliant link saulgood

Tanaqui · 19/06/2015 19:17

Her- marn- nee is just a posh accent saying Her- mi- owny I think- try channeling the queen!

reuset · 19/06/2015 19:23

It's plain wrong not 'posh'

00100001 · 19/06/2015 20:52

whilst you're here saulgood I thought (until I saw Breaking Bad) that Saul, was pronounced "Sow-ull" (Sow as in female pig). I have no idea why I thought that, my uncle is called Paul!

I have a friend in her thirties called Hermione. She pronounces it Her-marn-ee.

The correct way to pronounce Naomi is Nay-oh-me, but a lot of people say Ny-oh-me because it's easier to say apparently. I have a Naomi and she gets variable pronounciations - she doesn't care she answers to all of them ! Smile

Ausflug · 19/06/2015 22:16

I know several Hermiones. I would say they pronounce it more Huh-MIRE-nee

And Naomis I know pronounce it more like Nair-me

MadAngryGnome · 19/06/2015 22:20

The Maireads I know say it as My-rud, with the emphasis on the My.

girlandboy · 19/06/2015 23:03

00100001 you would be surprised how many people don't pronounce Saul correctly. I know how to because I'm married to one Grin

SaulGood · 19/06/2015 23:34

You have to pronounce it correctly for my silly moniker to make sense. Grin

It's not a name but I always want to pronounce biopic to rhyme with myopic.

SeenSheen · 21/06/2015 03:00

I know a Ciara who pronounces it Kee-aara. Is this a valid pronunciation as I always just assume her parents got it wrong?

"My MIL insists that her name (Jacqueline) is pronounced as Ja-kwa-leen"
Is she aiming for the French pronunciation, perhaps? I've only heard it with two syllables (Zhak-leen) in French, but I suppose it could be otherwise.
As an aside, I knew a little girl at one time called Jackie Lynn, first and middle names.

jaykay34 · 21/06/2015 08:39

ausflag My mil pronounces Naomi "Nayer-me" so similar to "Nair-me". She is the only person who pronounces it that way.
The usual pronounciations my girl gets are "Nay-oh-mi", "Nigh-oh-mi" and "Knee-oh-mi" - occasionally "Nah-oh-mi" (which is actually how it would be said in both Japanese and Hebrew).
Obviously accents are a big influence on the pronounciation.

HazleNutt · 21/06/2015 08:55

I wanted to call my DD Anais, until I realised that most Brits think it's pronounced Anay.

girlandboy · 21/06/2015 22:20

NinjaLeprechaun I have no idea really why she pronounces it as Ja-kwa-leen! She did try to learn to speak French a few years ago and kept mispronouncing all the words that had "que" in them. So a phrase such as "Qu'est-ce que c'est" made for interesting listening! Every que became kwa.

FishCanFly · 22/06/2015 10:22

I speak with a foreign accent and have hearing problems. The name i can't pronounce correctly for some reason is Tara Confused

LibrariesGaveUsPower · 22/06/2015 11:47

Hazelnutt - is that the fault of old perfume adverts? Fairly sure they said that as A - nay A - nay.

manicinsomniac · 22/06/2015 15:29

I think I say Nayer-me for Naomi

My Gran was called Marie pronounced Marry (apparently it's a traditional Northern pronunciation). When she moved down South people could never do it. Weirdly they understood that it wasn't a normal Ma-ree but their attempts at Marry were more like Mahr-ree.

I suppose a pronunciation is only wrong until someone uses it and then it's right.
Eg - I once met a Louis but he was pronouncing Lewis. And an Eilidh who pronounced it Aye-lee.
I would say those were wrong but, if it's the child's name then it's the child's name isn't it!

HazleNutt · 22/06/2015 18:09

Libraries, which one was that? I found this on youtube and they don't say Anay

OvidWasMyFishmonger · 22/06/2015 18:21

Alicia. One friend is A-lee-see-ah and woe betide if you get it wrong. Another friend is A-liss-ia.

Miranda - another friend spends half her life correcting people when they say Mur-anda instead of Mir-anda.

An unusual one is a friend of ours called Benjamin, pronounced Bin -ya- min, like the Israeli president.
