So, it turns out that Calliope is pronounced kah-ly-ah-pee - I just assumed is was "cally-ope" and was thinking, what an odd name to give someone Blush

Any others?

names always sound better in American accents Grin

SaulGood · 18/06/2015 17:14

Maggie, if Calliope was cal-ee-OH-pee then Penelope would be Pen-ee-LOH-pee and Persephone would be per-see-PHO-nee.

But it isn't. It's Cuh lie uh pee, just as it's puh neh luh pee and puh seph oh nee.

MaggieJoyBlunt · 18/06/2015 17:18

Yes, agreed, I was ignoring the stresses and just looking at the pronounciations.

Minitant · 18/06/2015 17:20

What about Genevieve? Jen-a-veev or Jon-vee-ev (with a soft J)? Or something else entirely?

iloveport · 18/06/2015 17:21

Perfectlyposed ahem.....so how do you pronounce 'Hermione'? Blush

MaggieJoyBlunt · 18/06/2015 17:26

Her-my-o-knee ilove

iloveport · 18/06/2015 18:38

Bloody hell! All these years......

savasana · 18/06/2015 18:49

Yes please somebody shed a light on the accepted pronunciation of Genevieve, because it's top of my list if I have a girl, pronounced Jen-eh-veev. Unless I've got the pronunciation totally wrong, in which case it's back to the drawing board on my list...

MaggieJoyBlunt · 18/06/2015 18:52

I'd say Zhen-eh-veeve

MaggieJoyBlunt · 18/06/2015 18:54

I'm still confused about Anais, though.

iloveport · 18/06/2015 18:54

Thank you Maggie for being so gracious Grin

emwithme · 18/06/2015 18:55

Apparently JK Rowling had had enough of people not pronouncing Hermione properly which is why she had Hermy-own-knee teach it to Victor Krum in Goblet of Fire.

emwithme · 18/06/2015 18:59

savasana it's both Jen-uh-veev and zhawn-vi-ev. First pronunciation is the English version; second is French.

I know one of each...

EllenJanethickerknickers · 18/06/2015 19:02

Um, Esme, I only know Ezz mee. What's the other pronunciation, please?

SluiceSloosh · 18/06/2015 19:04

Mairead= mor-raid we would say, emphasis on the raid.

ShadowFire · 18/06/2015 19:05

Esme can be either ess-mee or ess-may.

reuset · 18/06/2015 19:06

Calliope makes sense. Think about Hermione and other similar names, it follows similar 'rules'

Purpleflamingos · 18/06/2015 19:07

I always thought JK Rowling had misunderstood the name and had never done the Shakespeare play with it in (is it the dream?). My English teacher taught us it was Her-marn-nee at the time we were saying 'her-mi-own-nee'.

EllenJanethickerknickers · 18/06/2015 19:12

Thank you ShadowFire. Never heard of anyone called Ezz May? Confused I guess if it's French and has an accent?

reuset · 18/06/2015 19:25

I thought Hermione was Winter's Tale

bobajob · 18/06/2015 19:32

Anais is An-eye-ees.

lilacmamacat · 18/06/2015 19:43

My most revelatory revelation was Grainne. i always thought it was grain-ee but turns out it's gron-ya.

And lots of people pronounce the Polish name Malgosia mal-go-si-ah or mal-go-sha, but it's mao-gosh-ah. But Magda will do for short

SaulGood · 18/06/2015 19:50

Esme is Ezmay or Ezmee regardless of accent and no, not French necessarily (though it's often argued about). You get as many people who have never heard it pronounced Ezmee as you do the other way round. Smile

SnotQueen · 18/06/2015 19:59

I'm so confused Confused

From now on, it's 'You child, female one' or 'Boy child, dark hair'
