So, it turns out that Calliope is pronounced kah-ly-ah-pee - I just assumed is was "cally-ope" and was thinking, what an odd name to give someone Blush

Any others?

Thanks Bob Smile

I though Anaïs was Ann-ay-iss

TagineKaput · 18/06/2015 20:02

*thought

florascotia · 18/06/2015 20:13

Tagine -that's not too far off - Ann-ah-ees [http://forvo.com/search/Anais/fr/]]

I read a thread on here years ago with people insisting that Esme was only ever Ezmay. The only Esmes I've met have been Ezmees (all adults) so I was a bit Confused.

I'm confused about Caitlin too - I've only heard of it as Kate-lin. I'm not Irish though so that may be why.

I've been confused about Aaron before as well but not sure why. I've always said 'Ah-ron', but again I remember reading that was wrong but I don't know why.

ShadowFire · 18/06/2015 20:47

I've met some Aaron's who pronounce it Air-On and some Aaron's who pronounce it Ah-Ron.

AlmaMartyr · 18/06/2015 20:56

Air-ron! That's it, thanks Shadowfire. I've only come across Ah-ron but interesting to know it can be pronounced differently.

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 18/06/2015 20:59

I knew Hermione from a Winter's Tale at school . I've done pretty well on the Iris ones too. Am sure there are ones I stuff up though. Grin

Purpleflamingos · 18/06/2015 21:31

It was a winters tale - you are right. We were doing a production of the dream at the same time on the dance&drama club.

momtothree · 18/06/2015 21:41

Aoife .... is Eee th a ... same as Ethan ...

quesadillas · 19/06/2015 09:20

A couple of others I'm not sure on. Actually, they might be the same name! Lorely and Lorelei. I'd pronounce the first as Lorruly, but the second more as Lorrulay. Correct?

Sophronia · 19/06/2015 11:12

Lorelei is lor-uh-lie

GlitzAndGigglesx · 19/06/2015 13:01

Oh gosh I thought Aoife was ee-fa Blush

BualadhBos · 19/06/2015 13:08

It is Glitz

SnotQueen · 19/06/2015 13:13

Evelyn gets me all the time. Eeevalin or Ehvalin Confused

MaggieJoyBlunt · 19/06/2015 13:17

Or Ehv-lin

SaulGood · 19/06/2015 13:17

Aoife definitely is ee-fa

aoife24 · 19/06/2015 13:34

Saoirse varies regionally, sometimes it's Surshuh. That's how Saoirse Ronan pronounces her name.

GlitzAndGigglesx · 19/06/2015 13:47

Phew! Grin just because a pp put the "th" sound in rather than f

As for Evelyn (lovely name) I pronounce it ehv-lin but have been corrected before

swancourt · 19/06/2015 14:58

When I was about 7 or 8 I read a book with a character called Penelope in it. For years I thought it was 'Penny-Loap', like penny loaf

:D

(Not as an adult though!)

girlandboy · 19/06/2015 15:09

My MIL insists that her name (Jacqueline) is pronounced as Ja-kwa-leen

I'm always a little Hmm at that because I know three others by that name and they all pronounce it as Jak-a-lin (nearest I can get)

silverglitterpisser · 19/06/2015 15:17

This thread is a proper eye opener! Reminds me of my brother talking to me about a book n the character called "Dafeen" . I'd never heard the name n asked him to spell it so he duly did D...a...p...h...n...e Grin . He said I ruined it for him when I told him the pronunciation as he felt like he had to re-read the book with its new character lol.

EllenJanethickerknickers · 19/06/2015 15:34

For me, Esme is like Penelope or Daphne. Perhaps I should start pronouncing them Penelopay or Daphnay? Grin

SaulGood · 19/06/2015 16:26

EllenJane, Penelope and Daphne are Greek so the pronunciation is clear.

Esme has a French or Scottish origin depending on who you talk to so the pronunciation is possibly different. The first recorded uses of it includes Esmé Stuart, a cousin of James II. He had a French mother iirc and the accent and his heritage definitely imply the pronunciation of Es-may.

That's the problem with our language in general. So many mixes of other languages that the rule for one name may not be the same for another depending upon from where they were borrowed.

shoepolish · 19/06/2015 16:27

I've read the thread but still don't know how to pronounce Calliope or Hermione Blush
I thought Hermione was Her-my-nee? But is it Her-mee-oh-nee?
Never realised there was such a name as Calliope before now! So is it pronounced Cal-ee-oh-pee?
