Has Mumsnet ever ruined a name for you?

And do you regret it? I feel totally befuddled about names having sought opinions in here and hearing people's opinions.

Wish I'd used my own instincts now and had the courage of my convictions.

OP posts:

MrsBucketxx · 14/10/2013 16:28

It didnt bother me but apparently my daughters name is slutty I was told this week Hmm

Im not easily swayed anyway.

AuntyEntropy · 14/10/2013 16:33

DS1 is called Kermit (old family name) and we were thinking of Beaker for DS2, but we've gone off it now.

Mim78 · 14/10/2013 16:36

There was a thread about my name which I found very funny. Not often you get people's real opinion of your name!

I think we should all be careful about being too negative about any name people suggest on here. Feeling for you if you have been completely put off.

CruCru · 14/10/2013 17:07

Yes - I once started a thread about Magdalene and then was reminded of the Magdalene laundries.

CruCru · 14/10/2013 17:09

It's usually worth bearing in mind that MN isn't representative of the general population. Names that get a lot of coverage on here are not necessarily terribly popular in real life.

Mim78 · 14/10/2013 17:10

CruCru that is interesting - I was thinking that. I think on MN some more unusual names are more popular than in real world.

SatinSandals · 14/10/2013 17:20

No, the worst my choice would get is 'boring' and I love 'boring' names.

BeaverAbroad · 14/10/2013 18:51

My name is slutty apparently. It's the name of a colour (plus a letter) and I don't see how a name can show I'm 'slutty'?

RockMummy · 14/10/2013 18:56

DS has a name which implies 'badly behaved'. He is a well behaved straight a student so that throws those preconceptions out of the window. So glad Mumsnet wasn't around when he was born.

Bowlersarm · 14/10/2013 19:01

No because my DC were born before my knowledge and addiction to MN!

But I find myself annoyed by threads where someone is pondering 'William' and without fail there are always one or two posters popping up to say 'no don't call him that-he'll get teased and called Willy'. Now I have a 17 year old William nn Will. Being called Willy has been an absolute non event so it's not inevitable, but I would imagine those posters put the OP off.

Also whenever Claudia is bought up, someone pipes up with how they couldn't use that name because of the meaning. I think it's a really pretty name, and very few people know the meaning behind any name. Just seems petty to me.

Oceansurf · 14/10/2013 19:02

Someone said something about Alice the other day...reminding them of A Lice. Now I can't use it!

TombOfMummyBeerest · 14/10/2013 19:04

Um, apparently Jack is an asshole's name.

It's not wildly common here so I don't know any to verify.

TidyDancer · 14/10/2013 19:10

My name has luckily been roundly liked on here.

DD's name (first and middle) has only been referred to once as far as I can remember, and it was liked but someone made an observation of it being a less than desirable film character's name. We thought about that, but we didn't care since no one has commented whatsoever in real life.

DS's name I have never seen mentioned at all.

I love Alice. Had never thought about it as A Lice before!

Jenijena · 14/10/2013 19:12

Yoni has left my top 10

CinnabarRed · 14/10/2013 19:12

I certainly couldn't call a child of mine AnyFucker now....

Rhubarbgarden · 14/10/2013 19:20

I was put off using the name Anemone.

I'm glad about that.

frosty21 · 14/10/2013 19:28

I was put off Pearl.

NachoAddict · 14/10/2013 19:56

My dc:s names are rarely mentioned but they would also just get called boring I imagine. DD's name is a short version of a long name, which I didn't know when I chose it.

Think of the latest princess and add ie to the end.

I had a bit of a wobble about not giving her a prober name but soon got over it.

HeyJudith · 14/10/2013 20:04

Whass wrong with Pearl? Missed that one!

hawkmcqueen · 14/10/2013 20:30

My DD's name is MUCH too popular for MN! It always makes me smile because it reminds me of being really into different bands but when they hit the mainstream then suddenly those in the know don't like the music anymore! How can you go off something because other people like it too??!!!!

Passmethecrisps · 14/10/2013 20:38

Someone described my DD's name as 'sappy' recently. Thankfully DH and I picked it many years ago and DD is already well grown into her name and is most certainly not sappy (can a 1 year old be sappy?)

My own name starts with the dreaded K and is hyphenated. I probably should be banned.

beaver I have spent ages going through all the colours and adding a letter "red - redd? Tred? Ared? Reds? Bluee? Blues?" And so on.

And people.can I just say that as a teacher you would need to be a moron to presume behaviour from a name. I would bet my bottom dollar that you get naughty Persephones just as you will Chardonnays

CatsCantFlyFast · 14/10/2013 20:48

The colour name and slutty connotation I suspect comes from the saying "a woman" which means a prostitute

Passmethecrisps · 14/10/2013 20:51

Oh I seeeee

Very innocent, me.

How bloody rude

Iamgoodbutnotanangel · 14/10/2013 21:28

Well I'm about to have a slut (Scarlett) and I've already got an asshole (Jack) and I'm sure my other ds Lenny has been called a chav so I'm not doing too well!! ??????

Passmethecrisps · 14/10/2013 21:29

I'll bet you have a toilet brush as well *imgood"!
