Has Mumsnet ever ruined a name for you?

And do you regret it? I feel totally befuddled about names having sought opinions in here and hearing people's opinions.

Wish I'd used my own instincts now and had the courage of my convictions.

OMG itsnothing! Who would ever make that association in RL Grin

Yes my daughter has been guessed right, apparently she should have been called Catherine which is a nice name, I just didn't know that Katie was a shortened version of it.

My DDs name is totally "marmite" and has been loved and derided equally on here.

My DSs name is quite traditional but reasonably rare, and has been loved on MN.

I have not ben deterred by comments on my names. My name in RL is so bloody dull, and I was one of 3 in my year at school. Rubbish!

So many!

And I really wish I hadn't paid any attention because I hear other children called these names and wonder what all the fuss was about!

I don't even want to say now in case it puts anyone else off. I swore about DS1 I'd steer well clear of MN for DC2...but I couldn't resist!!!

And you buggers did it again Confused

My kids were all born and named pre MN (youngest is 11), so no. They also don't have names that I've ever seen mentioned, or mentioned negatively anyway. That said, I don't regularly hang out on the baby threads so they could being slammed 24/7.

I realise I'm here now, only because it popped up in active.

My ds name ( jude) was loved when I first posted about it in 2011 and got a much more frosty reception this year when it came up in conversation.

Dps name is common.

Mine is common too ( I think I know one other with my name)

Ive been put off darcy big time. Apparantley it is chavvy. I thought it was a nice old fashioned ( family member a few generations ago had it) pretty name. Also pearl has been met with distaste too.

I just take it with a pinch of salt. If wvery single person posting in response to a name found a fatal flaw in it that I had failes to spot, then id think again....but otherwise.....meh.

I love Jude. Wish I could use it but my surname means it wouldn't work Sad

Lazygaga - hooray that someone has the balls to say it how it is!!! I often think some names that are suggested on here are downright ridiculous, yet then people have the audacity to slate much more "normal" or "popular" names - May god strike us down for considering those!!! Heck, i'd rather my child be the 5th Isabelle in a class than be stood at the school gates waiting amongst the raised eyebrows for "Clementine"!! Surely it's only in mumsnet world that names like that exist?!

ProfondoRosso · 15/10/2013 17:51

I often wonder about that too, Dolly. You do get some beautiful, unusual names suggested on here, but on the occasions I've seen Hecate, I've gone Confused.

I always think its funny when a poster says they like the name Sarah, for instance, and has a bunch of people going Nah - don't like that - what about instead?

I love Clementine. Could never use it in RL life though.

Am having the same issue with Florence. I want to call dd3 it but am worried its a bit too 'out there' for my local area despite MN telling me its 'too popular' now - not round here that's for sure!

I think everyone has there own opinions, all that matters is if you and your partner love the name!! Smile

Report
Inglori0us · 15/10/2013 19:40

By asking for MN opinion you're going to get strong views, but I agree they're not representative of the population at large. My dd's name has been complimented but mine had mixed opinion. It doesn't bother me.
I'm trying to think of a boy name for pending baby, and I would use MN because I don't think opinion would sway me away from a name I loved.
As for dissing popular names, they're popular for a reason, because people like them.

DD's name is "horsey" according to MN.
clip clop

Quite relieved I won't be shouting for Agatha, Ottilie or Clemency in the park though Smile

I have the opposite problem. I'm expecting DC2 (a boy) and asked opinions on a name that got unanimous thumbs up (a rarity) making me immediately go off it Confused

Still nameless; hoping it's just pregnancy hormones.

We used to live next door to teenage girls called Clementine and Atalanta, and there was a Calliope close by too. My NCT group included babies called Seraphina and Ophelia. So yes, people do use these names in real life. This was London though.

DD2's name is liked on MN, yet no one in real life seems to like it

Report
looki · 15/10/2013 22:06

DD's name is for the most part well liked on this but it is a classically boring name too.

My top name for baby No. 2 is a marmite name but in truth seems more hated than loved. The second name on my list is universally liked. The opinions on both names are ok with me. In fairness I asked for opinions and I got them and I'm still happy to plod on and use the marmite name knowing at least the potential nicknames, views on it etc. If I preferred not to know I wouldn't have posted.

I love the MN baby name forum and the different opinions on it and find it really insightful.

One of my dd's name has been described as "wet" on here. Oh dear ha!!

Report

Is it Daisy MrsChanning? Someone just referred to Daisy as being a bit wet on my thread after I said that was my chosen name, doesn't put me off though...

I can't believe the prejudice against Claudia.
But James gets ignored.
Usual MN contradictions, then!!

I love Claudia. People would make a doctor's appointment for you in my neck of the woods if you called your children Calliope, Seraphina and Ophelia. The receptionist would give you the emergency appointment they save for total emergencies.

My daughters name is chavvy, my OH is common.

Mine is 'not a real name', is pronounced incorrectly and my parents were mentally ill when naming me according to one MNetter.

I would never ask for advice on baby names here. People seem to delight in making you feel like shit as they look down their superior noses at names you love.

I am concerned by the frequency I see my son's name suggested here. Puts me right off him.
