Has Mumsnet ever ruined a name for you?

And do you regret it? I feel totally befuddled about names having sought opinions in here and hearing people's opinions.

Wish I'd used my own instincts now and had the courage of my convictions.

I've got an asshole as we'll lol but he's my asshole and he's gorgeous, kind, intelligent ect............ :-)

poppydaisy · 14/10/2013 21:33

I now think Bendy Dick when I hear/see Benedict (thanks to someone's post recently).

cupcakeicing · 14/10/2013 21:37

My DS name was dissed today. Don't care. It was loved by Katie Hopkins so thats all that matters.

poppydaisy · 14/10/2013 21:43

Another name that was 'ruined' for me is Maddie as I now think of someone 'mad'!

Andanotherthing123 · 14/10/2013 21:46

My name is a shortened version and until I was 16 I thought it was hyphenated with Jane, as my Mum told me it was. I found it was just the shortened version, no hyphen Jane when I looked at my birth cirtificate. Turns out my mum's friend told her before she registered me that the shortened name was too plain on it's own so my mum must have pretended to herself and other people for years that she had hyphenated it to reduce the 'plainess'.

My name's come up here a few times and people always say that the long version is the 'correct' one. It amazes me how people can be so sure they're right about the long version being the right one. It's my bloody name. So I'm right. Ha!

iwouldgoouttonight · 14/10/2013 21:46

passmethecrisps I've just spent ages trying to add a letter to a colour as well! I came up with Violeta. But that doesn't sound slutty so it can't be that! Pinky??

filee777 · 14/10/2013 21:47

Wendy...

MollyRoses · 14/10/2013 21:49

I would it's scarlet

I can't get the princess plus the ie name

ProfondoRosso · 14/10/2013 21:53

God, how can a name be slutty?!

Mrs Legs A. Kimbo?

LazyGaga · 14/10/2013 21:58

Well I'm heartily sick of the criticising of all the "cutesy, ending in ie, will never be a barrister, far too babyish, oh it'll date so quickly" names. One of my dc has this type of name and it's just ridiculous. She'll never be a High Court Judge, top ranking brain surgeon or Prime Minister? Yeah, and like your Cecily/Persephone/Monty/Jonty/fucking Shrimpy will. Really?

Just cheap little shots and out and out snobbery.

itsnothingoriginal · 14/10/2013 21:58

According to MN my DD is a potato and my DS is a girl!!

Good job I love their names despite what some on here might think of them Grin

I'd probably think twice about asking for opinions on DC3 name here (although I know I would!).

iwouldgoouttonight · 14/10/2013 22:00

mollyroses Katie?

AuntyEntropy · 14/10/2013 22:00

Well Magdelene from upthread is a synonym for prostitute, so that is quite slutty. But Scarlet? No.

LazyGaga · 14/10/2013 22:00

Molly I'm guessing the name is Katie. Princess Kate aka Duchess Wink.

nonmifairidere · 14/10/2013 22:03

Yeh, I was quite keen on Wulfric and Jupiter until I saw some of the comments on here.

HasItStartedYet · 14/10/2013 22:05

Shrimpy Grin

Oh there are 6 under 3 at my DC's nursery. Terribly passé Wink

MN isn't a good name barometer. Lots of often posh names that are quite out there are loved and anything with a K is beyond the pale.

Disclaimer, one child with a name that people often like and one people think too common and one they think is a bit rough.

I love Claudia but here people go on about the horrid meaning. I only know the meaning of one of my children's names but still I thought twice.

frosty21 · 14/10/2013 22:23

Potato? I don't get it.

LazyGaga · 14/10/2013 22:44

Grin Shrimpy's so over.

Maybe Maris (Piper) for the potato?

JumpingJackSprat · 14/10/2013 22:54

I love Claudia and the meaning is a complete irrelevance. The only time it will come up is when little Claudia and her friends are all looking up what their names mean aged about 12. Im pretty sure she will get over it. My name means "bitter" but Ive survived!!

If you truly love a name then you wont be put off it by a few small minded people on the internet. You always get some horrendously rude people on here so im afraid you cant rely on getting measured responses.

The ones I hate are people that post to say "Oh I knew a .... growing up, they were horrible so I hate that name"

It means fuck all to anyone else that Bernadette used to bully you at school but the OP will just remember there was a black mark against the name they thought they loved.

LazyGaga · 14/10/2013 23:38

I wouldn't know what Claudia means without looking it up. Is it "She who wears dodgy make up"?

I don't think I know what the meanings are for my own dc's names!

buzzgirly · 15/10/2013 07:05

Yes. Dh and I were considering a name for ds, I posted on here and was told it sounded like a name for lady parts that I had never heard of. I was then told I was being an arse hole for considering it!! That really put me off.

Ham69 · 15/10/2013 07:27

I think the name is latest prince plus ie Molly
My DD's name has very recently been described as feeble! If you met her it would be the last thing that sprang to mind! And my son's is faddy, trendy, too nicknamey, too footbally, etc.
If you come on this site you have to have thick skin! It can be insightful too.

frosty21 it's Anya - apparently it's a posh potato Grin

Agree that people's impressions of a name will always be hampered by bullies at school or people with that name they didn't get on with. Certain names are ruined for me that way although they are actually quite nice names in themselves!
