Boys names which can't be shortened. Help!

Really struggling to come up with a name for DS2 (due in a few weeks)
I like slightly older names, as does DH. But I've got a real thing about people shortening names! DS1 is Harry and there are a few people we know who insist on shortening it to Har it drives me mad! So we're after a similar name for DS2.
Any suggestions welcome Wink

Ah, just remembered my favourite ever nicknamed given to a pal at school .... Flash

It had nothing to do with their actual name. I wonder of anyone can guess why it was Flash? It's a classic btw

I agree short names get lengthened. DH is Paul - I call him Paulie. He has 2 brothers with 1 syllable names and both of those are lenghtened by adding 'ie' by their wives.

I know somebody who even managed to shorten Roy which takes some doing (Ro).

Even if you find a short name and you stick to it when your DS is young, there will come a point when it is up to him what he answers to. My brother is Robert, and didn't mind Rob. Because my brother was brought up to ignore Bob (my mum hates it so she made sure he did too) he has never been called it regularly by anybody although a few have tried. Ultimately it is his choice though. On that basis, we plumped for names where we liked all versions of (including some I made up) so we never end up with something we hate. I can see why you are Hmm about Har though. I would never have expected that from Harry!

Interestingly my 3 syllabled DS1 has never had his name shortened although the shortened version is obvious and easy.

If we are throwing names into the hat, my vote goes to Jay.

Varya my friend Warwick is Wozza! Not sure that was quite what his parents had in mind when they named him.

I called my little one Ewan in the (vain) hope it wouldn't be shorted. But now he gets called 'ewey' (pronounced u.e) by my fil and inexplicably woo woo by his Indian great granny who can't pronounce ewan. Just have to put up with them [grits teeth]

It depends where you live - in my part of the world nick names are rife, so names get shortened, lengthened, changed into really stupid sounding stuff lol So no matter what name you pick I think you have to be aware that your DS's friends in school may well call him something completely different! My DS is Dara which you can't really shorten, but me and DH sometimes call him Daz, which is a horrible nickname but quite a funny one Grin

My son's called Harper - and one of my things was not giving him a name that would be immediately another shortened name iykwim e.g. Johnathon becomes Johnnie. I was named Kathryn but then always called Katy. I annoyed me in the sense that I would always have to have an 'official name' (the one for forms) and also my 'real' name (what everyone calls me).

I do call him Harps sometimes though, it's kind of sweet. I tend to avoid Harpy though :)

I have an Eric and he gets called "Ericky" or just "Ricky" so extended more than shortened!

DS is Ned (christened Ned rather than short for Edward or Edmund). Very hard to shorten or lengthen though DB calls him Nedley Hmm

My mum had the same issue when my little bro was born as people shortened my name, she gave him a one syllable name and people ended up saying it twice instead.

Haven't read the whole thread, but I named my DSs with names that could be shortened so that they would have the choice - dependent on age and disposition - as to what they wanted to be called.
Weird thing is, so far, nobody has shortened any of their names.
So perhaps that's the answer Confused

you just can't win with names. At university there was a boy next door called Steve. Everyone called him Stee!

You really can't help what your children's friends will call them - as a teenager, DD had friends known as Satch, Couchy and Pie (actually David, Adam and, I think, Michael)

I had thought that her name, Amber, was unlikely to be shortened - she ended up known as Bam, short for Bambi...
