Really struggling to come up with a name for DS2 (due in a few weeks)
I like slightly older names, as does DH. But I've got a real thing about people shortening names! DS1 is Harry and there are a few people we know who insist on shortening it to Har it drives me mad! So we're after a similar name for DS2.
Any suggestions welcome Wink

You are cursed anyway you look at it. Choose a one sylable name (Sam) and people will lengthen it (Sammy, Sammo). Choose a longer one and it will be shortened. I think best to go with a longer name that you like the shortened versions of and call him that. IE named James but called Jamie, names Thomas but called Tom.

My parents chose me a name that they thought couldn't be shortened. It didn't work.

Best boys name IMO is Warwick which is unusual and cannot be shortened.

Rache1S · 27/02/2013 20:22

My brother is called Ben and he gets called B. My other brother is James and when he was young people lengthened it to Jamie. You really can't win.

Both my children have names easily shortened and various different people call them different versions. I don't think it really matters if an auntie they only see once a week for a few hours calls them something different really.

WormCanner · 27/02/2013 20:34

An awful lot of these suggestions are shortened versions of names anyway! I don't see the logic.

wineoclocktimeyet · 27/02/2013 20:44

My dad's name is Ian and when he was growing up it was shortened to E (works best when said in a strong Scouse accent!)

I know a Kes and a Kett, neither of which get altered. I like both too - think they meet the 'unusual but easy to say & spell' test.

Thisisaeuphemism · 27/02/2013 21:48

Why does shortening the name annoy you? Friends often do this With affection.

Do you feel the same about lengthening names too?

meddie · 27/02/2013 21:53

I have a Ben, it doesnt get shortened it gets lengthened into
bendy
benny

I have a Euan who is called Eu-ie, Yu-Yu, Yu, etc!!

anonymosity · 27/02/2013 22:05

I've thought of another short male name that you can't shorten. I love it but its a bit unusual

KIT

exoticfruits · 27/02/2013 22:12

You can't win. DS1 has a long name-shortened by everyone (except me) and he shortens it himself. Therefore DS2 has one that you can't shorten and he gets called a version of his surname-again he like it.
I wouldn't worry. They are the one with the name and they are the one to decide.
