I wanted a slighty kooky 'posh' name for boys or girls. I really like tarquin, DH is not impressed. Ideas??

Tarquin is awful - not cooky, just posh
are you more looking for things like Cosmo and Sholto? I don't really think they're cooky either, but slightly less unremittingly posh than the likes of Tarquin and Peregrine

I always think of tarquin as kooky as it is very rearly used. Perhaps I mean more posh then?

Rufus is great, but not particularly posh or unusual these days, I'd say.

What about Leander - I've only ever met one (& he was v. nice), so def. unusual, but still spellable etc.

Takver · 05/05/2012 12:34

Also
Rupert (though maybe just straight posh)
Peregrine - I really like this esp with nname Perry
Piers

Just have a read of a Penny Vincenzi novel, that should give you a few ideas!

Merlin is one of her favourites.

I knew a Murdo once but kept calling him murder by accident.

I also knew a kid called Geordie. Cute but not that posh!

Really posh people have solid, traditional names, plus outlandish nn.

For less used names, how about:

Araminta, Eugenie, Iphegenia, Artemis, Juno, Berengaria, Edwina, Georgiana, Clelia, Wilhemina?

Clovis, Rollo, Florian, Caspian, Marmaduke, Christian, Jeremiah, Kenelm, Neville, Orlando, Percival, Warwick?

AKissIsNotAContract · 05/05/2012 13:24

Oh shit, I reallly like Ottilie and didn't think it would be seen as posh.

I'd suggest Clarence.

Hatechoosingnickname · 05/05/2012 13:24

Lettice, Ingrid, Harriet (Hetty)

Ludo, Merlin, Raphael, Blu

Babyno3tobe · 05/05/2012 13:44

I'm one for different names, I hated the fact their would be kids with all the same name as my boys and wanted to be different which is why I picked Bion (pronounced beon) for my 1st and chae (pronounced shay) for my 2nd I'm stearing towards xavier and quirky names like that for my next one but I have noticed a few are starting to be used quite a bit.

Xavier
Bailey
Logan
Valentine
Olivia
Lowenna
All lovely names in my opinion. Hope you find the right one for you
Hoping my lo is a girl this time iv had a name waiting since conceiving my 1st. louella-may don't know a single person who has picked it as of yet as I mixed the Louise and Ella together myself but apparently it is a name so hoping it will be the name of our next one

rachel234 · 05/05/2012 15:33

Raphael
Quentin
Hugo
Sebastian
Tristan

Antonia
Seraphina
Anastasia
Louisa

are all great classic names imo!

evamummy · 05/05/2012 15:39

I think most names work their way down the classes, starting as posh and then becoming quite 'common'. Interesting article about this in Freakonomics. Most of the names here are no longer 'posh' imo, with the exception of Tarquin maybe.

I quite like

Cassius
Quentin
Tristan
Lucian

Cecilia
Olivia
Alexandra
Felicia

MarySA · 05/05/2012 15:40

I just love the name Pandora. But I don't suppose DH would have agreed. So lucky I didn't think of it when I had DD. I like Cecilia and Cecily too. Violet is also nice.
