I wanted a slighty kooky 'posh' name for boys or girls. I really like tarquin, DH is not impressed. Ideas??

Yes, and I dreamt I was on this thread last night and suggested Mildew.

Trazzletoes · 11/05/2012 12:50

I desperately wanted to call DD Xanthe but DH said it was too chavvy Hmm I thought she would sound like a pro skier! Instead she has a common Biblical name.

Kaekae · 11/05/2012 12:52

Marmaduke.

Lady75 · 11/05/2012 13:32

I have a Rufus, he is amazing :-)

Mopswerver · 11/05/2012 14:13

Love it Linerunner I have a few suggestions of my own but I think I'll swallow them down Grin

Mopswerver · 11/05/2012 14:15

Does anyone remember 'The New Statesman'?. Alan B'stard had a daughter called Portia (spelt Porsche) Grin

zipzap · 11/05/2012 14:19

Ptolemy for a boy

Hester for a girl

LineRunner · 11/05/2012 14:20

Yes! I remember that!

Tbh most long babyname threads end up going a bit silly at the end. People suggest names like Kenwood, Target and Carolgees.

Mopswerver · 11/05/2012 14:24

Grin at Ptolemy. Now I know this is a joke. I remember a friend & I bumping into a couple we knew in a park in London. The woman was heavily preg and my Northern friend asked did they have any names. "Yes, Fanny for a girl and Squire for a boy" came the reply, to which my dry friend remarked "Well let's hope it's a boy then!" Grin

alwaysanauntie · 11/05/2012 14:32

As my own name has popped up a couple of times (in the earlier posts, so no I'm not called Target etc) thought I'd share some of my family ones.

Girls:
Rosalind
Vivienne (Vivian is boy's spelling imo - see the young ones!)
Jemima
Eleanora (anglicised version of a popular Italian name nn Ellie in UK & Nora in Italy)
Jane
Linda
Belle

Boys:
Linton
Gavin (was going to be Casper but dm changed her mind when she saw him!)
Geoffrey
Hamish
Callum
Brody (yes we're Scottish!)

Have fun choosing! :)

I was musing about Absinthe, to my oh, as a girls name last night. We are not having any more children, so won't be using it. Might have to get a hamster.

LineRunner · 11/05/2012 15:33

I think a hamster, or indeed any tiny mammal, called Absinthe sounds grand.

threeleftfeet · 11/05/2012 20:39

Mopswerver I know a little Ptolemy.

EssentialFattyAcid · 11/05/2012 20:55

Caesar
Dorian
Ophelia

Chocol8 · 11/05/2012 21:16

Barnaby. Barnabus. Titus...lol!

Chocol8 · 11/05/2012 21:37

Barnaby...Barnabus...?

Rosey...Rosemary...?

Smile Mildew Smile
i always thought Tarpaulin for a boy would be simply splendid

LineRunner · 11/05/2012 22:00

Did I mean Mildred?

Mopswerver · 11/05/2012 22:51

Love Tarpaulin and Mildew. Twins anyone?

JoInScotland · 14/05/2012 21:04

My DS is friends with a boy at his nursery named Platon - Russian version of Plato. Pronounced Platt - on. He's the only one we know/have ever heard of!

CandthePickle · 14/05/2012 21:11

Torquil maybe instead of tarquin?

RomyMadison · 15/05/2012 13:52

Arabella
Sol(boy)
Ralph
Minty
Astala(peaches baby's name)

ShowOfHands · 15/05/2012 13:58

Is Raphael really posh? I have one. He is Raphael Erasmus. He is known as Rafa, Rafe, Raffie and Rastus depending on who is saying it. DD calls him Rafty Dafty Doo. It's a great, versatile name. We also liked...

Emrys
Amos
Sacha
Atticus
Bram (Abraham)
Caspar
Solomon

A girl would have been Josephine Aphra Mirabel. Aphra I LOVE.

I like slightly different, slightly interesting names. Some brilliant ones on here.

lloydie500 · 15/05/2012 17:35

I was at school with a Titus and have never met anyone else with that name! Always quite liked it.

iguanadonna · 15/05/2012 21:13

Cecily is lovely. Classic, pretty, posh - not trying-too-hard-middle-class like all this Ptolemy and Octavian nonsense. For me it's a bit weakly girly - Cecily doesn't sound like a ball-breaking business woman. But I expect she'll read classics, do rather well, marry someone rich, and be awfully good at making slightly quirky picnics for Glyndebourne.
