I wanted a slighty kooky 'posh' name for boys or girls. I really like tarquin, DH is not impressed. Ideas??

I like the explorer/adventurer/archaeologist theme, RedQueen.

How about

Falcon
Raold
Edwin
Mortimer
Ernest or Ernst
Flinders
Max
Frederick

BlueChampagne · 08/05/2012 16:56

Ambrose
Aloysius
Rupert

Names from Operas, unless it's your native language?

ScatterChasse · 08/05/2012 21:22

I agree with Rachel, choose either Quentin or Quinton, not some odd hybrid of the two!

I always liked Rupert too, or Guy is rather nice.

MoonHare · 08/05/2012 22:21

Montgomery, Selwyn, Boyd, Wyatt.

Can't think of any posh/kooky girls names that haven't already been mentioned.

LineRunner · 09/05/2012 16:40

Hortense
Rosalind
Rowena
Horatia
Cordelia
Miranda
Unity

OxfordBags · 10/05/2012 16:28

Not Unity, the only well-known Unity was the Nazi-loving Mitford sister!

roselover · 10/05/2012 16:32

My son is Orlando....James Raphael Llewelyn....and at the christening the vicar said do we have to read all these names out? My sister shouted yes from the congregation .......he is two and a half now and I love his name....he gets Ollie or Lando for short - his twin sister is Lousia-Clementine - which seems a bit pedestrian by comparison...love Rufus .......my next fav name

FatDan · 10/05/2012 16:33

Poor kids !

LineRunner · 10/05/2012 16:34

True, Oxford.

Funny that they were so posh but now their names are not posh-sounding, except maybe for Diana.

Is Pamela posh?

Jessica just makes me think of Jessica Rabbit and needing brain bleach.

HowardnHilda · 10/05/2012 16:51

Rory.

Tres posh without sounding like a floppy haired twit ;)

Chocol8 · 10/05/2012 17:26

Not sure if these are considered posh/kooky or not, but...

Abigail -Abi
Amelia
Morgana
Phoebe
Louella
Camilla -Milla
Chiane
Pollyanna
Elkie
Celine
Gloria
Sophia
Dorothia - Dot/Dotty

Amadeus
Jools
Roman
Rodney - Roddy
Anton
Gabriel
Edward - Eddie
Jude
Bertram - Bertie
Jefferson
Frazer
Herbert - Herbie/Bertie
Theobald - Theo
Norman

A hyphenated name for a girl always sounds a bit posh i think. I used to say my friend's name in a posh voice - Abigail Amelia.
Personally, we had a couple of names lined up for my ds and when we saw him we knew instantly which one suited him. Good luck.

HowardnHilda · 10/05/2012 17:29

Hyphenated first names = common as, I'm afraid!

tammytoby · 10/05/2012 17:49

The hyphenated names that I've come across tend to names like Lily-Mae, Mia-Lily, Daisy-mae.... not sure I'd describe them as kooky/posh.

Love Dorothy/Doriathia, Celine, Amadeus and Roman.

FatDan, why poor kids? What are your kids called - maybe we have different tastes Smile.

jaffacakehips · 10/05/2012 18:25

Outstanding my DD's name has been mention! Hurrah as its never posted.

Cosima, Marina, Davina and Posy

bestemor · 10/05/2012 21:08

Dulcie has been neglected for a long time.
Alma? (like Mahler's wife - she was a composer too)
Tybalt (like in Romeo & Juliet)
I know a Pasco, like the surname; apparently it's Cornish and means Easter.

MuzzaDun · 10/05/2012 21:42

If you are after strong, posh and cooky then stick to traditionally 'posh' names that we consider boring.

When was the last time you heard of anyone under 10 years old called
Francis, Peter, Andrew, Anthony, John Or Mary, Jane and Anne... how different is that!

Good luck!

LOandI · 10/05/2012 22:04

What about Jemima ?

Thirstysomething · 10/05/2012 22:16

DD has one of the names that keep reoccurring on here... 4 yrs ago no one had heard of it! Old fashioned posh from the 20s ... Don't really mInd... But bit gutted that it seems to have become a cliche. Hey ho. Jago is a great name (Cornish for James), but has becone v Notting Hill now.
It happens. Herd mentality?

autumnchild · 10/05/2012 22:20

Aubrey
Bartholemew

yearofthetiger · 10/05/2012 23:36

Don't know any posh people, but I had a lovely dog called Rufus.

fridakahlo · 11/05/2012 00:16

My ds if he had of been a girl would have been Hebe-Margot (hypehenated or unhyphenated, we never quite decided.)
Also Titus. Has Millicent been mentioned?
Cora? Clarence?

HowardnHilda · 11/05/2012 08:46

If he reads this he'll be thanking his lucky stars, fridakahlo Wink

TinyGroanytoad · 11/05/2012 09:28

There's a boy at my daughter's school called 'Princewil' - you can't get posher than royalty!!

TinyGroanytoad · 11/05/2012 09:32

Actually there are a few named Princess too, so what about Queenie?!

Mopswerver · 11/05/2012 09:36

Is this for real?
