I wanted a slighty kooky 'posh' name for boys or girls. I really like tarquin, DH is not impressed. Ideas??

I'm a bit gutted that Jago has made an appearance as "posh" - its a good, solid old Cornish name. Nothing posh about it!

MarySA · 06/05/2012 11:01

I just thought of Esther. It's probably not posh but a nice name. Don't know how popular it is. I don't know any.

threeleftfeet · 06/05/2012 11:14

Phinneas

threeleftfeet · 06/05/2012 11:15

Oops that should have been Phineas! Blush

Nothing negative about 'poshness' imo and much better than it becoming chav, no?

I absolutely love Alonzo, with nickname Lon/Lonnie.

I also like Evelyn and Vivien. They could be used for a boy or girl, but I would lean boy-wards with both I think.

I think to be honest, lots of the girls have a 'normal' name, and then a posh or 'cutesy' nickname. Look at Jilly Cooper- Agatha goes to Taggie. Or ones like Francesca will go to Chesca, Harriet to Hattie/Hetty.

evamummy · 06/05/2012 16:00

We know a 12 year old Quinn - have never, ever heard of quim Confused. In fact I think Quinn is a lovely alternative to slightly overused Finn. But OP, perhaps use Quentin on the birth certificate - gives more options.

I also like Felix, Xavier and Caspian for boys and Florence, Constance and Agatha for girls.

ScatterChasse · 06/05/2012 16:23

Quinton is nice too, if you don't fancy Quentin as a long form of Quin.

Babyno3tobe · 06/05/2012 18:56

Jolnscotland- yeah I new it was a name I had just put the 2 names together and then found out it was an actual name iykwim lol

thegreylady · 06/05/2012 19:22

I know a Ptolemy nn Tolly

thegreylady · 06/05/2012 19:23

quim means fanjo so avoid Quin I fear

Sophiesmummie · 06/05/2012 20:01

Never heard of quim.....never, honestly! Wouldn't worry about that association. Love Quinn for a boy (and know a 2 year old one).

Also like Quentin, Raphael, Hugo and Felix of the names mentioned so far.

Rezolution · 06/05/2012 20:02

I like the name Sebastian. Remember Sebastian Flyte?

Sophiesmummie · 06/05/2012 20:04

Yes, Sebastian is nice. But Seb or Sebbie isn't unfortunately imo. That's the problem with lots of names - the names sound lovely but the nicknames are less nice.

Kaekae · 06/05/2012 22:13

And for what it is worth i think posh and kooky are just opinions derived from the area you were brought up in, the eras you've lived through and how you would like people to percieve you, or whwre you live currently!

The name my son has caused controversy in my family and isn't a really an ''out there / posh'' name HOWEVER my sister sort of made up the name she gave her first born (ie re-spelt a very popular name) and people think its 'posh' where she lives........ however i percieve it to be vicky pollard-esque....

justonemorethread · 06/05/2012 22:48

Today I came across

Edgar
and
Sidney

As boy's names.

BeeInMyBonnet · 06/05/2012 22:54

Calypso, Hector (Chamomile LawnGrin)

Loup23 · 07/05/2012 20:06

Love Quintin and Tarquin (tarky)

Others on the list for boys: Milo, Kit (short for Christopher), Otto, Wilbur, Jasper, Freddie, Solomon.....

Girls: Otillie, Jemima, Hermione, Tallulah, Alexandria (Lexie), Kitty, Taliah, Socorro

DH dislikes most so this is a great thread for me to get some ideas!

dementedma · 07/05/2012 20:30

Simon seems to have gone out of fashion these days, but I like it.

TheRedQueen · 07/05/2012 20:53

Girls: Saffron, Cressida, Grania

TheRedQueen · 07/05/2012 21:00

Boys: more tricky I think, but perhaps Ranulph or Edmund.

rachel1970 · 08/05/2012 09:49

We have a Quentin so obviously love that Smile. I'd spell it that way (rather than Quintin) as I think it is the more common spelling (think Quentin Tarantino, Quentin Blake, Quentin Willson, Quentin Cooper etc). We sometimes shorten to Quenny or Quin.

I also like Rufus, Hugo and Clement for boys and Ottilie, Felicity and Cecily for girls.
