So, DH is in love with the name Jack...

Baby being born 2 weeks today by ELCS, we have found boys names so difficult, already have a 3yo DD called Holly.

Other names on the list were Alex (will probably use Alexander as middle name) Theo, Danny and erm..thats it. Hmm

DH has now fallen in love with the name Jack, and i do like it but it is soooo popular and i was one of 10 Laura's at school and known by my initial so that puts me off a bit. DH says it doesn't matter really and i am overthinking it.

What do you think?

I was one of 3 victoria's in my class in the 80s so I get you .

Can you call him John? Nn jack?
No real advice but I am in same position as DH loves Sophie.

I have vetoed it for te exact same reason

Well you wouldn't have to think too much about buying them presents.

No, you are not overthinking it. If you really love the name, then fine, use it. However he will forever be known as Jack Whateveryourlastnameis to distinguish him from all the other Jacks in his school. You know how it is with your name, I was one of 5 Jilteds in my class and would much rather have had a more unusual name.

If you have 2 weeks to go you could always call your DH by his full name everytime you talk to him and see how soon he tires of it Grin.

From your list I love Alexander, Danny is ok but prefer Daniel, not so keen on Theo.

Have you tried getting DH to look through the National Statistics Baby Names for 2010? It might make him realise how popular Jack is, although these things are always regional, and might also give him a bit of inspiration.

Kayano, friend of ours has a Sophie who has always been know as soapy as her big sister couldn't say Sophie for years Smile.

I love Jack, I know its popular but its just yummy. If its any help I have a 3 year old called Olivia, the most popular name in the wooooorld Grin She has just started nursery school - she's the only 1 out of an intake of 56!

We had the same issue with DS1, and our surname starts with a C, so he would forever be known as Jack C... Jacksie! So that name is out of the window for us

I personally am trying to avoid names where there will be too many in the class, but not go too far in te opposite direction, quite hard to do!

These things are so regional aren't they wigglesrock. DD has just started school and almost every other girl in the class is Evie/Eva/Ava/Eve.

I have a Jack! He is the only one in his class, and one of 3 in his entire school! He was born the year it first became popular and honestly I don't know where all the Jacks are hiding as we hardly ever meet another! It's a great name!

It's too overused to do it's job properly, ie identify a person. You might as well call him 'boy'. I don't know a single Jack who is known as Jack - they are all Jack P, Jack H, Big Jack, Fat Jack, Blonde Jack, Smelly Jack etc., or a nn based on their surname.

Loving your dd's name (mine is the same)!

I have never met a little Jack and I have been to a lot of baby/toddler groups and there isn't a Jack at dd's nursery.

I think chose the name you love ultimately. Do you love it too or is it just your dh?

Thanks for all the replies, as nice as the name Jack is, i think i just can't bring myself to use it. Please help me think of some alternatives surname is Taylor..

Jack is a lovely name, who cares if it's popular. You could have Jack as a nickname for Jacob or John.

Jack Alexander is a very nice name.

Hmmm I know alot of Jacks of varying ages, but if i liked the name enough i'd still use it.

Prefer Alex.

If this one is a boy we'll be having a Sam (so we'll be like Richard Branson with a Holly and a Sam!).

I also like more traditional, less cutey names for boys - Peter, David, James for example. Also love Josh (but not Joshua).

I suggested Alex as a first name, but DH said no for some reason.
I prefer more unusal names tbh but he's having none of it.

Variations on John/Jack: Jonas, Jonah, Joachim, Jorick (that's actually George in foreign).

Alexander is a very popular name internationally, it's know throughout the world.

Sorry really not keen on Bobby or Charlie but then I don't really like urchin style boys names.

The Blairs have put me off Leo forever too.

If you don't want to use jack due to popularity then I'd think twice about Charlie! There are loads about! Many many more than jack!

To be honest if you or your DH really like a name, is popularity such a huge deal? We named Jack before it became popular, doesn't make us like it any less!

Alex is extremely popular, there are 3 in my toddler group. Jack is very popular too as is Charlie etc. BUT choose what you like as otherwise you may have avoided it and he may have been the only one in the class! Yet you may have given him a rarer name and ended up with 3 in a class! Just luck and not the end of the world.

I like Leo and Danny best out of your suggestions but think you should really go for jack if you love that name.

I realy liked Jack but went for Zak in the end. There are nearly 1000 children at his school (secondary) and he is the only 1.

Big NO to Jack! I have a popular name...there are 3 in my group of friends so we are all numbered (I'm now known as 'three'!). We actually find it amusing but is quite annoying when someone shouts our name and all 3 of us turn round!
Alexander is lovely and I actually like Danny(Daniel)...a good strong name but not that popular nowadays. Theo is ok but I know a few of the Greggs crowd have taken it to their chavvy little hearts Wink
Sticking on the theme of traditional but not so common nowadays....Nicholas, Robert, Philip, Michael, Luke, Marcus...
Let us know your thoughts so we can get a better idea. :)
