Baby being born 2 weeks today by ELCS, we have found boys names so difficult, already have a 3yo DD called Holly.

Other names on the list were Alex (will probably use Alexander as middle name) Theo, Danny and erm..thats it. Hmm

DH has now fallen in love with the name Jack, and i do like it but it is soooo popular and i was one of 10 Laura's at school and known by my initial so that puts me off a bit. DH says it doesn't matter really and i am overthinking it.

What do you think?

I absolutely love the name Jack.

Not sure what surfer names are but how about Jared, Ethan, Solomon or Nathan?

belgo · 07/09/2011 16:20

Zander short for Alexander is totally a surfing name.

largeginandtonic · 07/09/2011 16:29

I have mega surfy mates and their little lad is called Laird after the surfer guy. He really suits his name and i don't know of another!

Sonny is also fab.

Jonah, Caspar, Wilder, Cassius, Remy, Red, Fabian (Fab). All sound surfy/beachy to me.

largeginandtonic · 07/09/2011 16:30

Flynn is great, have a friend who has just called her son Flynn. She also has a Seth.

Jude, Saul?

peanutbutterkid · 07/09/2011 18:27

I grew up in a Surfer town (my brother Louis went surfing). Most of the surfers I knew called things like... Ian, or Craig. And Other popular 1960s-1970s names.

List of famous surfers. Super out-there names like... "Simon", "Clyde, "Bill" and "Robert".

MatLeaveForever · 07/09/2011 19:14

Flynn Alexander Taylor would have the initials FAT. Shame as it sounds great as a full name!

Gincognito · 07/09/2011 19:44

Christopher nn Kit. I want one!

mogandthecat · 07/09/2011 20:21

I knew someone who was quite surfy with a son named Sol (for sun) which is really cute (and different without being silly!)

PandaNot · 07/09/2011 20:40

My Jack (actually a John) is the only one in his school of 250 pupils. The popularity seems to be regional. In my dd nursery class there are 8 Graces!!

sonniebonnie · 07/09/2011 20:45

Then there must be areas with huge concentrations of Jack - given how many were born over the past 10 years or so!

I think Sonny is very cool and more interesting than Jack. There are enough Jacks out there imo.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 07/09/2011 20:55

That'll be here then sonnie Grin, only now it's turning into Olivers and Williams.

Offspring · 08/09/2011 04:45

To me Devon is (terrible) lunch meat so I couldn't do it, but my cousin is named Davin which is close (when we were very small my sisters and I found it hilarious to call him Devon Hmm).

I love the Joseph suggestion, also throwing Eli into the mix :).

ShoutyHamster · 08/09/2011 09:51

Err, your DH only gets so much veto.

Sounds like you're making loads of suggestions, he gets to insist on Jack and dig his heels in.

It doesn't work like that.

TELL him that just as he has vetoed Sonny, YOU are veoting Jack, because you don't like it enough. He ain't going to be Jack. That's the end of that.

You both now have to make a list of at least ten names that you would be willing to accept. You swap lists, and rank the other person's list. The top five from both become the ten you'll sit and discuss. And Jack and Sonny are not to be on either.

Suggestions:

Jacob (Jake)
Oscar
Matthew
Heath
Linus
Samuel (Sam)
Finn
Christopher (Kit)
Benedict
Aaron
Milo

Flynn Alexander is lovelySmile

mayanna123 · 08/09/2011 12:58

But the initials would be FAT Shock

belgo · 08/09/2011 12:59

You can always add another middle name to avoid the initials FAT.

MatLeaveForever · 08/09/2011 13:08

As long as it's not Flynn Alexander Richard Taylor...

Hope you can agree on something soon :)

belgo · 08/09/2011 13:20
Grin
DigOfTheStump · 09/09/2011 08:04

Jacob - similar to Jack, but a wee bit different
Lucas
Daniel

DigOfTheStump · 09/09/2011 08:10

Oh, and Quinn, Sam, Michael, Rufus, Ethan and Arlo.

evamummy · 09/09/2011 10:13

Jack is really very popular already, I'd avoid it if you can. Love Asher, Quinn and Sol as quite 'surfy' names.

PercyFilth · 09/09/2011 12:07

I'd go with Michael, it never dates but isn't very common just now. He is a very cool and tough Archangel! The name travels well as there is an equivalent in most languages, plus there is a range of diminutives. What's not to like?

PercyFilth · 09/09/2011 12:12

Oh, and .... if you like Sonny so much, I don't see why you can't call him that as a nickname whatever "proper" name he is given. Sonny imo is just a nickname derived from "son" so it would be quite legit to use it as such, if it suits him.

mopsyflopsy · 09/09/2011 12:19

I think Michael sounds very 'dated' actually - I know about twenty Mikes born in the 1960/70s.
