Baby being born 2 weeks today by ELCS, we have found boys names so difficult, already have a 3yo DD called Holly.

Other names on the list were Alex (will probably use Alexander as middle name) Theo, Danny and erm..thats it. Hmm

DH has now fallen in love with the name Jack, and i do like it but it is soooo popular and i was one of 10 Laura's at school and known by my initial so that puts me off a bit. DH says it doesn't matter really and i am overthinking it.

What do you think?

It's very regional I think, I'm in London and have only met one Jack since DS was born in 2007. Do you know for sure it's popular where you are?

Papyrus · 07/09/2011 10:36

pommedechocolat I'm a Holly and my younger brother's Sam, so you clearly have good taste (our dad isn't Richard Branson though) Grin

wigglesrock · 07/09/2011 10:36

I love Leo, it was my boys name, after 3 dds think I'm going to retire it now Grin I'm not a fan of the Charlie, Alfie, Bobby names and I know a few Charlies.

JiltedJohnsJulie I know, we're in NI and there are multiple Avas and Ellas in the nursery, the boys names are a bit more Irishy but there are still 2 Daras Grin.

At least you're not going for Ben, dd1 goes to a club where there are Ben and Holly siblings, there is a lot of Nanny Plum etc jokes to be made.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 07/09/2011 10:41

levantine you do know that the DC will grow up and might actually move away from home at some point don't you Grin

JiltedJohnsJulie · 07/09/2011 10:42

Grin at Ben and Holly too.

We are in the midlands, and Jack is definately in the top 5 names. DH suggested Michael a while ago. I wasn't sure about it, is it a bit dated?

Erm, the only 'type' of names i definately dislike are the Logan, Brogan, Kayden type of names. Also 'old man' names like Wilf, Albert etc.

Ooooh, Zack...yes, good suggsetion! One of my favourites but can't decide if I prefer Isaac or Zachary.

Bumpsadaisie · 07/09/2011 10:45

FWIW I have never met a Jack! Have loads of friends/acquaintances with baby boys and older school aged boys, and nerry a Jack amongst them ...

belgo · 07/09/2011 10:46

What about Marco?

I don 't think Michael dates very much.

rarebreed · 07/09/2011 10:46

I like Surfy names i suggested Jesse but DH says too girly. Other names that were also vetoed (a lot of you will think with very good reason) Sonny, Levi, Asher, Kelly. I know they aren't everyones cup of tea but this is why i am finding names like Jack/Harry a bit boring. Smile

What about Dylan?

Lexiejack · 07/09/2011 10:56

I have a jack and he's the only one at nursery and toddler groups. Know 5 kaydens though!!!

glittershoes · 07/09/2011 10:58

I LOVE Kelly for a boy although I do understand I am in the minority. My DH also vetoed!

wigglesrock · 07/09/2011 11:00

I like Jesse too.

rarebreed · 07/09/2011 11:02

i wanted to name him after Kelly Slater here

DH has suggested Warwick..?????

mumatron · 07/09/2011 11:07

I have a jack and I've only ever met one other. Ds is the only jack in his school.

DessieLou · 07/09/2011 11:10

Hmmm...Quite like warwick. I agree that Michael won't date but he won't be one of many. Michael Alexander has a good ring to it....thats my choice for you!

Theas18 · 07/09/2011 11:15

Just to say your name list is all pretty popular so the jack situation is likely to occur,,, (Charlie Alex Daniel bobby etc are all very popular hearabouts in a certain social group and would label you as part of that group- the "ok" magazine celeb followers )

rarebreed · 07/09/2011 11:18

hmmm am def not an 'OK' reader.

I was totally in love with a boy named Warwick in my pre teen days. I like it!

Unusual without being weird.

I also have a thing about Lochlan but possibly better with a Scottish connection.

rarebreed · 07/09/2011 11:20

in the area where i live my kids will be surrounded by Logan/Kayden/Evie-Mai/Gracie etc.

It's too overused to do it's job properly, ie identify a person. You might as well call him 'boy'. I don't know a single Jack who is known as Jack - they are all Jack P, Jack H, Big Jack, Fat Jack, Blonde Jack, Smelly Jack etc., or a nn based on their surname.

I agree with this 100% percent. We name a person to IDENTIFY him/her and if that name is already used by thousands of others it really doesn't do a good job at indentifying him.

If you have a look outsisde of the top 100 or so you'll find lots of lovely classic names that aren't already used by lots and lots of others. Perhaps you'll find a name you love equally (or more Smile)?

CaptainNancy · 07/09/2011 11:48

We are midlands, and every other boy is named Jack, so I understand your misgivings.
We do know a little Sonny- it's really lovely and suits him down to the ground.
Leon is nice too.
I really like Warwick (as a name, not the town I mean...)

Kester?
Duncan
Evan
James (Jamie)
Jago

tammytoby · 07/09/2011 11:55

Actually of all your suggestions, Sonny, Levi, Asher and Kelly are the best ones imo - cool, well known but not overused.

Also, you have quite a popular surname (Taylor) that I'd definatly avoid a very popular (i.e. top 10 or 20) name because he will likely have the excact same name as many others. Very annoying when it comes to email, facebook, or even for business connections later on in life.
