The struggle to finish (and occasionally start)

Up front: I am not good emotionally right now

But: I finished about 5 projects last week/week before as I got access to a photographer to do a shoot - the projects had been lying around for weeks/months

Since then I have been loloping round doing nothing half-heartedly trying to sort and tidy

It's ridiculous

How do other creators keep on track and finish stuff

& how do you decide which of the many projects you should start next!!

Ooh well done on the article!

I am crap at voiceovers but my company is too tight to spend money on a proper voice artist 😂

I'm really tempted to sign up for this radio drama online course but I'm a bit worried that it'll end up being just another thing on my to-do list...

KatyMac · 07/07/2020 10:58

Oh that's tricky isn't it something that you want to do do that might have to try and find time for

Ouch

Still havent finished that essay.
Also, my greenhouse arrived so we are on day 2 of eaves plates and bolts and ramps and door frames.

I am daydreaming about sewing - does that count?

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 12/07/2020 20:00

Also I tidied a box from when I last moved house and found my good sewing scissors and - what do you call the rolly cutter thing? One of those.

MinesAPintOfTea · 12/07/2020 20:18

I have a policy that I can only sit and watch TV/listen to podcasts if my knitting is in my hands. Suddenly I have lots of busywork to do rather than watch tv!

Doesn't help that the first thing I wanted to finish I ran out of yarn on. I bought said yarn (for another project) in 2016 😢 It's in timeout and I'm working on the next thing! I have made 1 mask, 1 Bandana with elastic at the back and a very easy dress under lockdown.

Current project target list:

Bandanas for DS's lockdown hair (sew)
Another couple of masks (sew)
Try making knickers (sew)
Finish Icelandic jumper (knit. Started in 2016)
Finish blanket (knit. started similar time)
Christmas stocking for new nephew (knit)
Consider winter wardrobe for me and DS

KatyMac · 12/07/2020 20:22

I am daydreaming about sewing - does that count? Yes I think so

what do you call the rolly cutter thing? a rolly cutter thing!

Keep on keeping on, as they say!

Will you look on eBay etc to find more wool? How sad!!

You said the 'C' word!!

OP posts:
SuperLoudPoppingAction · 12/07/2020 20:53

Ravelry can be a good place for wool.
Or ask on here - you never know!

I have actually been knitting those fingerless gloves so it's not all greenhouse.

MinesAPintOfTea · 12/07/2020 21:18

@KatyMac

The mill closed at about that time... And this was to use up the last 75% of a skein. It's a rectangular lace shawl, I'm just letting it have time out before I decide what to do (because when I realised at 70% of the way through that I was nearly out I felt like frogging the whole thing)

C word: I can assume that a stocking will take at least 2 months. If I'm not to end up in a panic I will start in August which means thinking about colour and pattern now. As this is the 5th child of this generation and all the others have got personalized stockings I can't stop at this point!

Greetings! Thanks so much for tagging me @KatyMac I really need this thread! 😊😊😊 I’m slightly guilty of starting (yet) another new knitting project instead of completing any one of those outstanding but that’s okay 😀 this really shouldn’t take long, it’s a very loose knit long cardigan on 15mm circular needles, it will grow fast. I might do both sleeves at once so it doesn’t succumb to Second Sleeve Syndrome (I don’t like to think about all the poor sweaters I’ve almost finished, waiting years for their second sleeve) 🙄🙄🙄 this time it’s different because I’m going to dye it as soon as I’ve sewn it all together 💡 💡 💡

KatyMac · 13/07/2020 10:31

What a shame @MinesAPintOfTea - good luck with 'C'

I'm just not a massive fan of 'C'

Goodness @Ylfa never heard of second sleeve syndrome - good luck!!
I love the idea of dyeing but I'm a wuss; also sometimes I only want to dye a small thing and 'dylon' etc dye loads and cost quite a bit!

OP posts:
Ylfa · 13/07/2020 10:47

Dyeing gets much cheaper over time if you buy three ‘primary’ pigments (eg turquoise, fuchsia and lemon yellow) plus black and just mix the colours either directly on the fabric or in small quantities yourself - although that’s possibly still a bit £😧 at first.

KatyMac · 13/07/2020 10:59

Interesting & what brand/make would you suggest?

Is that for naturals or poly blends?

I dyed a wedding dress really successfully, but a jumper badly!

Ylfa · 14/07/2020 12:32

Oh wow oh wow that’s so lovely 😮😍

I’m using fibre reactive dye at the moment, it’s good for natural stuff, called procion mx

KatyMac · 14/07/2020 16:12

That was 100% poly I use 2 green and a grey to tone it down & I had to boil it on the stove!!

My pan was too small so I had to label off the liquid and boil it up in a separate pan and then pour it back!!

Sounds exciting, is there a website?

Finished a top/dress thing and it's way too big

So I need a rethink

How is everyone doing?

OP posts:
SuperLoudPoppingAction · 22/07/2020 21:25

Big like it looks cool and slouchy?

I've done absolutely zero crafty things but I did finish one of my essays. One to go...

KatyMac · 22/07/2020 21:33

No sort of 'big'

Hello there! This thread came up on active threads and I'd like to join please. I got into dressmaking about 3 years ago and go through peaks and troughs. I started making a Liberty blouse in February and haven't gone near it in lockdown and it's sitting on my dressmaking form waiting for the sleeves to be finished off.

I think one of the problems is that my sewing room is now my home office and I spend so much time in their during the week that I avoid using it when I do have spare time. I'd love to get the blouse done though and then I want to make a pinafore in cord so I can get the wear of it in autumn.

I started doing embroidery as well during lockdown and bought lovely linen and canvas to work on but it's definitely not as easy as using the kits I got from Amazon.

@KatyMac your work is amazing! You are very talented.

I am away to put my laptop away and thread my sewing machine in the green that I need for my blouse. I've just realised that I've got a few facemasks that are half done so you really tackle them first.

So weekend plan is:

  1. finish facemasks
  2. recommence blouse
KatyMac · 25/07/2020 09:09

@Ulysses good for you; i'll make sure you keep at it!!

We have had a family bereavement here so the next few days will be tricky!

Thanks for your kind words I just wish I could sell a bit more, so I'm spending time getting my gazebo ready for when I can go back to work/markets
