The struggle to finish (and occasionally start)

KatyMac · 28/06/2020 10:32

Up front: I am not good emotionally right now

But: I finished about 5 projects last week/week before as I got access to a photographer to do a shoot - the projects had been lying around for weeks/months

Since then I have been loloping round doing nothing half-heartedly trying to sort and tidy

It's ridiculous

How do other creators keep on track and finish stuff

& how do you decide which of the many projects you should start next!!

I can relate! It's way more exciting to me to start something, or even plan something, than finish it.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 03/07/2020 00:53

Today was a more academic day.
I half wrote something.

But I tidied spade to set my sewing machine out and will do some sewing soon hopefully.

My friend was talking with me about buying yarn and I was remembering how much I used to love space dying it. It's been so long since I had enough time to do more crafty things.

Oh today I used the smallest wax cloth and it worked so that made me happy.

Ylfa · 03/07/2020 08:22

Oh please talk to me about dyeing yarn @SuperLoudPoppingAction !!!

I’m still here, not much progress to report but getting mentally ready to do a sort of inventory of works in progress, quite daunting though 🙄

KatyMac · 03/07/2020 10:40

Yes I have been working on a list of tasks and a timetable putting in admin and planning as actual tasks! I have also put in development of ideas as a task rather than getting sidetracked during sewing time!!

Still haven't done anything yet!! But look what arrived!!

This is the book I learnt from.

This is a good free article explaining dyeing with acid

I used to use kool aid sachets but I'm not sure you can get them now.
I've used UK brands of food colouring but with red you have to watch out there hasn't been any yellow dye added.

These are great.

KatyMac · 03/07/2020 11:39

Dyeing is scary - I only have 2 successful dyeing projects!!

I'll have a read (next admin slot Grin)

Katymac, I love that!

KatyMac · 03/07/2020 11:49

@SuperLoudPoppingAction it'll be on the back of a denim or black jacket - which do you think?

Although I do have a short cloak it might work on?

I didn't realise when I bought it, that it was beaded

OP posts:
SuperLoudPoppingAction · 03/07/2020 11:50

The blue on the right would look lovely with some shades of denim, wouldn't it?

KatyMac · 03/07/2020 11:51

Yes - it's fairly big tho, so I'll need a largish jacket!

KatyMac · 03/07/2020 22:01

Jacket commission finished

Tomorrow is another day!

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 03/07/2020 22:21

Well done!

Today I found some yarn I dyed which was halfway to becoming a sock.
I've decided fingerless gloves are more realistic with my attention span just now.
It's darker in real life

Oh I love that - I don't work well with wool but the colours are fabulous

Wool makes me feel so excited 😀 that looks amazing! Thanks for the links, it’s encouraging me to confront The Stash (or Stashes since it’s too much to contain in any one part of the house so there is yarn fucking everywhere) and round up all the real wool and cotton yarns for dyeing.

I love this thread!

Hello 👋
It seems I have the opposite problem to most here, it's the starting a project that I have the most trouble with! Once I'm into it, it's mostly fine (although I am struggling at the moment due to lack of space as I used to use DD's desk, but it's currently set up for DH to work from home. Also no time on my own in the house without the kids, so this has cut down on the time I have to do it too).
My most current project is a quilt for DS, it was supposed to be for his birthday which was last December Blush
Will post some pictures later of current progress Smile
Also got lots and lots of projects yet to begin!

KatyMac · 04/07/2020 21:08

Finished 2 jackets today but a wedding dress is sulking on the floor and 2 commissions are cowering in corners

Not my best day

How's everyone getting on? My DP is in a grump about my sewing machine taking up space in the dining room but I refuse to put it away as then I definitely won't get anything done....

I have one dress to make (plus some experimenting with shirring to do first)
Also another dress to plan, some embroidery to finish, a load of mending to do and a weaving project to start...

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 06/07/2020 13:03

Not to mention work for my actual job... four voiceovers to record and edit, two blog posts to write and a shitload of research to do!

KatyMac · 06/07/2020 13:15

Oooh voiceovers!! I sound about 9 on the phone/recordings

I've woken up queasy so I'm doing nothing :(

Just found out an article I write has been published in a (small, local, online) art magazine- woo-hoo!!!

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 06/07/2020 14:00

That sounds very exciting! Well done

tinselvestsparklepants · 06/07/2020 14:13

I find it helpful to listen to a radio programme /podcast. Say it's 30 mins long, well then that's how long I sew for. And I can listen to good audio books that way, or whatever.
