My point is though, that I haven't tarred all English people with the same brush, even though it all happened at an impressionable age.

I'm not that daft.

mugglewump I'm sore you have met so many idiots. Not all Scottish people are bad. Give is an idea of what kind of things they have said. I'm sure someone on here will be ableto help with a comeback. I am a bit the same usually take ages to think of a comeback. Sometimes though holding your head high and not reacting is the better part of valour. I am quite proud of the time I didn't react angrily when I had a container of Macdonald's fries chucked over me while being told to go back where I came from.

expatinscotland · 10/06/2010 19:58

Yes, Simon, that's so right, people like my own children 'speak like cave dwellers', after all, they're from an arsehole of a country. Every single of them is a low-life bigot.

What a sick, sad, pathetic attitude you have.

No, I'm not Scottish. I'm actually American, married to a Scottish person, mother of Scottish children, naturalised British citizen.

There's a lot wrong with my native country, but I hope someone from there slaps my face beet red if I ever pipe up with an attitude like yours about it. Because there are parts of it that are beautiful and many beautiful, decent people.

You're a real disgrace.

Hope you've done the honest thing and left if you hate it so much. No one's holding a gun to your head.

I say that as someone who didn't like how things were going in my own country.

So, well, if you don't like it, piss off.

scottishmummy · 10/06/2010 19:59

be a cold day in hell when i cheer ingerland.

McSnail · 10/06/2010 19:59

Hear hear.

McSnail · 10/06/2010 20:00

My 'Hear hear' was to Expatinscotland.

My Parents moved here 13 years ago (my Mum was Scottish), and overheard a conversation about mixed marriages. My Mum told me she was outraged when she thought they were referring to race, but even more so when it transpired it was about religion-a Catholic marrying a non Catholic.

I see it here. A neighbour of mine's in laws have never been in her home or looked after her children in 8 years because she is not Catholic, they paid for DP's brother's family to go to Disneyland last year and look after his children often.

Oh, and when I say Catholic, here it seems to mainly mean supporting Celtic and that's about it.

expatinscotland · 10/06/2010 20:02

How ridiculous can you get? All Scottish are anti-English. All English are anti-Scots/Irish/whatever.

Oh, yes, uh-huh. You've quizzed every one of them and found that to be true?

Most people don't actually give a flying fuck.

backtotalkaboutthis · 10/06/2010 20:03

"if you don't like it, piss off"

what a horrible attitude expat

would be considered utterly unacceptable and racist under quite a lot of circs

expatinscotland · 10/06/2010 20:05

'what a horrible attitude expat

would be considered utterly unacceptable and racist under quite a lot of circs'

To tell someone who calls their country an 'arsehole of a country' and accuses everyone in it of speaking like a 'cave dweller' and is obviously full of hatred for it, to move?

Yeah, that's really racist and unacceptable, back. NOT.

backtotalkaboutthis · 10/06/2010 20:06

no one's going to say it's every scottish eprson and every english person no one has said that even the op proves that's not the case

but it's there and it's defended as a harmless windup

so not every scottish person shares this bigotry? does it make it alright then? does it make the bigotry any less bigoted?

expatinscotland · 10/06/2010 20:06

I hear people say, 'I hate America' all the time. Fine. Don't go there then. If I hear it from another American then, I tell them, 'Why are you still there then?'

And that's racist and unacceptable? Or is someone once again not reading full posts and the posts in direct response to them.

McSnail · 10/06/2010 20:07

It's not a horrible attitude at all. I would say calling a country (that's actually rather beautiful) an 'arse-hole', is a horrible attitude, but hey - that's just me.

weegiemum · 10/06/2010 20:07

I'm Scottish. I'm not supporting "ABE" but I don't support England.

But then, I don't get the "home nations" thing.

Scotland is my home. Not England. not Britain. Scotland. I am no closer to being English than I am to being French, or Canadian, or Argentinian, or Croatian. I'm Scottish!

So I feel no "home nation" need to support England (or any other nation).

English people do get ridicuously riled by this - I migt have fallen out with an English friend who was incensed that I was "allowing" ds to support Argentina. He does so as he follows Barcelona and is a huuuuuge fan of Lionel Messi, a fabulous role model for an 8 year old boy! Why should he not support Argentina.

I'm ot bothered by football and not supporting anyone. I do hope England don't win overall though, aminly because we will never ever hear the end of it!

expatinscotland · 10/06/2010 20:08

'no one's going to say it's every scottish eprson and every english person no one has said that even the op proves that's not the case

Eh? Sorry, back, but I think you completely miscontrued that post. Because that is NOT what was implied by it at all. And no one else has contrued it the way you have.

backtotalkaboutthis · 10/06/2010 20:08

not allowed to criticise one's own country? seriously?

what about people who come to the UK and proceed to criticise its religious and social practices?

"if you don't like it, piss off"

acceptable?

McSnail · 10/06/2010 20:09

QUOTE: "so not every scottish person shares this bigotry? does it make it alright then? does it make the bigotry any less bigoted?"

And the very same can be applied to English bigotry. It's certainly not one-sided...

PotPourri · 10/06/2010 20:09

England bashing is racism full stop. It's not just in football, it's in the 'funny' (oh yeah, split you sides - NOT) wee jokes about england and english people. Makes me sick

expatinscotland · 10/06/2010 20:09

My dad is American. But he has Mexican parents and dual nationality with Mexico.

He supports Mexico.

Strangely enough, no one seems to care.

McSnail · 10/06/2010 20:10

QUOTE:"what about people who come to the UK and proceed to criticise its religious and social practices?

"if you don't like it, piss off"

acceptable?"

And THAT'S a deliberate misinterpretation of a post if ever there was one.

backtotalkaboutthis · 10/06/2010 20:11

definitely implies there's not much of it and it doesn't matter

wrong

there is a lot of it, it's bigotry and it does matter

not ridiculous at all

as you can tell it really doesn't matter to me what other people make of it when it's as plain as the nose on your face what it actually says
