em, i am british but i dont support england. i dont have to. it is my right to chose who i give my support to.

i have to say i was surprised at the england support song being performed on BGT on saturday night, i dont imagine if scotland or northern ireland were in the WC that they would be given the same priviledge on sat night prime time tv. we dont all support england.

DuelingFanjo · 10/06/2010 16:14

I'm not supporting anyone cos I couldn't relaly give a shit

I was born in England but consider myself Welsh so might support them a bit if they were in it but otherwise I am not bothered.

xstitch · 10/06/2010 17:33

I intend to support England even though I was born in Scotland. tbh it is some TV and radio sports presenters that make it very difficult.

I watched Commonwealth games coverage one year to here the commentator announce: " There are no British athletes in this heat" When the list of competitors was shown there was a Scot and a Welshman.

This one from radio 2 Presenter 1:It would be nice to have some Premiership managers who were actually born in Britain"

Presenter 2: Well there is Alex Ferguson, he is successful

Presenter 1: He isn't British!

Oh and I have experienced bigotry in England. from being offered a translator to threatening comments from a gang of young men.

Im scottish, and i'm supporting England!!!
Obviously, if Scotland where in the world cup, then I would support them, but as we're not in it, Englands the next best team, as we are all British at the end of the day.
I'm also a Rangers and Chealsea supporter, and when Rangers are playing, alot of the supporters wear England tops.
I also like the England football songs, especially Vindaloo and Come on England!!! Scotland dont have any good sing along songs, apart from 500 miles, which really gets on my nerves, especially DP puts it on full blast and sings along with a really broad accent!!!

muggglewump · 10/06/2010 18:16

I'm English living in Scotland. DD is half English, half Australian (with an Irish name, I thought it would be amusing to confuse her further) born and lived all her life in Scotland, and considers herself Scottish and neither of us could give a holy crap.

I hate football and am just pissed off it will mess with the soaps.

xstitch · 10/06/2010 18:24

Riven in the Commonwealth Games it is the individual nations of the UK whereas it is GB in the Olympics

I'm Scottish, but my entire life people have told me I'm english because I dinnae spik like a cave-dweller. Most of my family are English, I don't know why I don't sound like I run around the hills trying to whack a haggis, nor do I care. I was bullied so badly at school because of it and people are still hugely snotty to me now, I'm sick of it. What do they expect me to do carry my birth certificate with me everywhere I go?

I hate being Scottish.

I'm ashamed of how most of Scotland behaves towards English people.

I hope England do really well, and piss of this hideous arsehole of a country once and for all.

End of rant.

LetThereBeRock · 10/06/2010 19:19

Have you been watching Trainspotting?

LetThereBeRock · 10/06/2010 19:21

This most certainly is not 'an arsehole of a country'.

And what's that bollocks about speaking like a 'cave-dweller'?

LetThereBeRock · 10/06/2010 19:30

Actually away and bile your heid and while yer there away and raffle yer doughnut as well.

xstitch · 10/06/2010 19:32

That will piss off not piss of

Sorry to be a pedant but as a hideous, arsehole , haggis whacking cavedweller I think I should be excused.

apparently it all came from a scottish person, so nothing more than a harmless wind-up -- which tbh you do seem to be taking in jolly good part

McSnail · 10/06/2010 19:38

I'll probably want England-shire to do well, up until the point the commentators start warbling on about 1966 (usually two minutes into a game)

Then I shall look for another underdog to support.

AvadaKedavra · 10/06/2010 19:40

I'm English, I live in Scotland and have been seeing some nasty FB statuses from (real life Scottish) friends, a few near the knuckle/verging on racist comments in person. Not nice.

I'm Scottish, I lived in England for years as a child, and was bullied every single day for my accent. My sister was actually beaten up by a group of four boys on her way home from school.

We aaaalll have anecdotes, but that's what they are - anecdotes.

Yes, Avada you should pull them up on it. Having a status saying you are off to support whomever England are playing (Riven I don't know either) but if the are being racist then not acceptable.

McSnail · 10/06/2010 19:45

That wasn't really my point though Riven.

muggglewump · 10/06/2010 19:46

I get the anti English stuff too, have had for the whole 9 years I've lived here and it annoys me, and upsets me as my DD is Scottish.
I don't care what people think of me, I care what they think about DD's Mum if that makes sense.

I tend not to say anything as I can't think of anything to say at the time, I just spend hours after thinking of witty comebacks.

I wish I was quicker!

If I fancy an argument yes Riven. They generally don't understand, say it's just a bit of fun and proclaim me to have no sense of humour (but I am English so of course I don't ) but I just know if roles were reversed they'd be as upset and angry as I am.
