Acceptable? Um, yes. Why live in a place you hate so much you spew vitriol about it online and accuse all your own countrymen of speaking like cave dwellers and the entire place as an arsehole?

Oh, please if it's 'racist' not to tell such a person to piss right off if they hate it so much.

If you think that's racist, LOL! I'm really glad for you.

England-bashing is racist.

Well, that goes for any nation-bashing.

I see tons of American-bashing right here every single week.

But I don't go off screaming 'RACIST!' all the time.

backtotalkaboutthis · 10/06/2010 20:13

" It's certainly not one-sided..."

it's way more prevalent in Scotland, has been expressed robustly here and is generally defended as a joke

where is my sense of humour

McSnail · 10/06/2010 20:13

"so one is allowed to say it to Scottish people who dislike their country but .. to no one else?"

Yes, more or less. That way one doesn't get accused of bigotry.

expatinscotland · 10/06/2010 20:13

'football makes people nasty. Ban it.'

I SO agree, Riven, as noted by my first post on here .

Ban alcohol, too!

McSnail · 10/06/2010 20:14

"it's way more prevalent in Scotland, has been expressed robustly here and is generally defended as a joke "

Let it aaaallll out backtotalk.

It's obvious you need to...

backtotalkaboutthis · 10/06/2010 20:15

not the same analogy expat

you've criticised the way things are organised in the UK and no one has told you to piss off if you don't like it

I doubt you'd find it acceptable if they did

expatinscotland · 10/06/2010 20:15

Oh, Riven, was watching 'Tribal Wives' the other day and thought about you, as they were all wearing headscarves.

I thought about my visits to Islamic countries and how nice it was just to slip on my Buff and not worry about my hair. Just wash, brush, Buff on, kirby grips in place to hold it.

Job done!

Call this Catholic a closet Muslim!

backtotalkaboutthis · 10/06/2010 20:17

lol snail I really don't think i'm the one with aeons of repressed resentment under my belt

call a spade a spade, and bigotry bigotry

tis bigotry, whichever way you slice it

expat, american bashing IS racist. Whether you shout it or not, the fact remains that it is racist.

expatinscotland · 10/06/2010 20:18

'you've criticised the way things are organised in the UK and no one has told you to piss off if you don't like it

I doubt you'd find it acceptable if they did'

Actually, back, it wouldn't bother me at all.

I'm not the oversensitive type.

And he didn't 'criticise'. LOL. He called it an arsehole and implied Scottish people speak like cave-dwellers who sound like they rrun round hill whacking haggis.

That's not criticism, my dear. But I also don't hide behind namechanges, either .

"I really don't think i'm the one with aeons of repressed resentment under my belt"

Well, you're doing a VERY good impersonation of a Scot...

"call a spade a spade, and bigotry bigotry

tis bigotry, whichever way you slice it"

I absolutely agree. But I've shrugged off and forgiven the anti-Scottish sentiments and insults I've experienced over the years...
Bigots are wankers, WHATEVER the country.

backtotalkaboutthis · 10/06/2010 20:23

gosh i wouldn't mind you knowing who i am

there are reasons for this but you go ahead and make insinuations, it's a bit "so what" to me

if American bashing is racist then so is England bashing..

how dull to come full circle

LetThereBeRock · 10/06/2010 20:23

How can American bashing be racist? Americans are far from a homogenous mass. They aren't a race.

It is bigotry however but it often seems to be acceptable on here to spout anti Americanisms.
I really don't get the apparent animosity from many posters towards Americans and all things American.

"Bigots are wankers, WHATEVER the country. "

So, do I win the Nobel prize for that nugget of original wisdom?

PotPourri · 10/06/2010 20:25

And as backtotalk said, bigotry is bigotry 0 whether it is a 'joke' or not

backtotalkaboutthis · 10/06/2010 20:26

Great. We agree. It's bigotry. Hurrah. Did it have to take so long?

What pisses me off is people defending it, repeating it, saying it's a joke, a wind up, what do you expect etc etc.

It would be unspeakable for that attitude to obtain when it came to jokes about colour or sex.

McSnail · 10/06/2010 20:26

"And as backtotalk said, bigotry is bigotry 0 whether it is a 'joke' or not "

Yes, yes. We get it.

expatinscotland · 10/06/2010 20:29

McSnail, for a cave-dwelling, hill-running haggis chaser, you sure are articulate .

There is a general accepted anti enlishness in Scotland. Usually it is fairly silly though most Scots meeting an individual english person would be perfectly friendly. It really needs to end. I have been nervous about bringing my sloany, ralp lauren shirty friend to my local pub in a small town as I knew the heads would turn as soon as she opened her mouth. I wil be keeping an eye on my little polite englisg sounding kids when they are playing in the local park.

The english can dish it out as well, the dislike for Gordon Brown (many didn't like not having an english PM), the rant about english taxes paing for lazy scots etc, the stereotypes in the media, the biased reporting ets - It tends to be more subtle where as in Scotland english bashing can almost be an national pasttime.
