Jerusalem has a lovely melody but it isn't very inclusive. Something not affiliated with any religion would be preferable imho.

EddieIzzardismyhero · 10/06/2010 15:30

Sorry diva, that was to Orm not you!

EddieIzzardismyhero · 10/06/2010 15:32

Started new thread here to gather suggestions which I can send to Dave .

Can you tell I'm stuck at home today?!

We're not having the Royal family. You can keep them.

Totally disagree with your plan to ban football - but totally agree with giving the royals to Scotland (or to America - even better!) .

The Scots wouldn't even have to build them a new house as they have Balmoral already - job done.

LetThereBeRock · 10/06/2010 15:39

I don't care.You're keeping them.

We'll do a deal - we'll take the Queen & Harry and you can chop the heads of the rest of them!

LetThereBeRock · 10/06/2010 15:45

No deal.No Queen.

We'll take the corgis though.

I don't think it's become a horrible thread at all. Very interesting.

I don't think any of the analogies used really equate to the Scottish-English thing, though. With Croatia and Serbia there's a violent civil war very recently. Germans committed some awful atrocities against Dutch people within living memory during a lengthy occupation. Anglo-Irish relations have been tainted by violence until recently.

But when was the last actual conflict/violence when it comes to England and Scotland? Hundreds of years ago, surely?

Personally when it comes to Germany, I'm not that bothered either way. Argentina I always want the other team to win for an actual footballing reason - they cheated against us in a crucial match in a World Cup. But I wouldn't go to the rather ridiculous lengths of buying flags/shirts of opposing teams then anyway.

It just all seems so disproportionate.

Wembley, 1977?!

EddieIzzardismyhero · 10/06/2010 15:57

Riven, just declare a republic. Full stop.

But I still don't agree with you about banning football !

scanty · 10/06/2010 15:58

Agree, Jerusalem should be the English national anthymn. Beautiful song - see I love it and I'm Scottish - we're not all that bad!.

mayorquimby · 10/06/2010 15:59

I'm Irish and won't be supporting England in the world cup. It's not due to any history of violence etc. and I won't be cheering against them, it's just why would I support any country other than my own? There's countries i'll want to see do well but only due to individual players etc and only if they're playing nice football, where as supporting a team normally means you don't care how they play as long as they win.
There's still quite a bit of anti-english sentiment in some parts of Ireland but thankfully the majority of people who cheer against England now do it out of our shared rivalry/for a bit of fun rather than taking it too seriously but there is still definitely a significant minority who seem to be anti-english beyond the sports field.
