AIBU Books Game Part Seven

Hi all, here we are again ...

As always, everyone welcome to pile in with AIBU book synopses, as long as you bring ice cream or something equally tempting for when we're stuck.

To continue mine - I'm in charge but it's terribly difficult to keep control. I don't know how long I can keep their respect. I didn't ask to be in charge ...

Pogleswood · 21/09/2010 23:11

I knew it! You're all Eng Lit types aren't you?
(No-one is as well read as Moomin,CJ - s'obvious,innitSmile)

AIBU to think a lot of it is quite forgettable?

llandb · 21/09/2010 23:28

I'm not! (Takes this as admission from Pogle that she ain't an Eng Lit type either; joins her on special corner of raft for non-Eng-Lit lepers)

Pogleswood · 21/09/2010 23:35

V.true,llandb!
Marshmallow?

MoominMymbleandMy · 22/09/2010 01:04

Yes, please, Pogle

Was your one Bridget Jones, Elephants? I've not read it, but it's the only one I can think of famous for big knickers!

Budge up non Eng-Lit lepers, please, and make room for me too. If I'd had the sense I was born with I'd have opted for Eng Lit at Uni, but I didn't. So I was very, very bored there instead. Silly me.

...University is for rich folk's sons, not a cobbler's lad! We can't even afford to send him to school. And I'd have no objection to undertaking, what with it being a good steady trade. When he wanted to go to sea, it was bad enough...

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 22/09/2010 01:28

You see the thing about doing English Lit is, you only get to read proper books - you know, the ones that we read for fun anyway. Once I realised that it was a foregone conclusion really.

Yes, was Bridget Jones Moomin. I found it hilarious and have read it many times, although now feel faintly disgusted at the crap films and chicklit explosion that followed.

MCP on yours! Who else is still going?

Pogleswood · 22/09/2010 07:46

Have a marshmallow,Elephants! I wasn't intending to divide the raft here,I'm just terribly nosey! Unless you'd prefer fruit salad?

...it is forgettable.well,I,or rather we,aren't happy...

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 22/09/2010 07:52

Are you talking life in general, Pogle? Stuck in a bit of a rut?

Ha well if you are being nosey I did English at a very pretty university with a nice round library where I could have become extremely well read, had I not opted for eating carrot cake and drinking tea/gin as my path through academia. :o

Pogleswood · 22/09/2010 08:52

I think I may now be extremely Envy,Elephants.
Now I didn't have a chance to eat carrot cake and drink tea/gin when I was at university because I was working the whole time!
In fact,I don't think carrot cake existed when I was at uni Grin

...not quite as all encompassing as life in general. No we just think the whole thing has been misrepresented - and we plan to rectify that...

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 22/09/2010 09:13

Sorry Pogle

Science is hard, that's why I didn't do it. Wink

Hmm...so you're going to rewrite history? Sounds ABU, unless you have a good reason for doing so?

CJCregg · 22/09/2010 10:06

WTF are you all doing on the raft at one in the morning? I am never here when anyone else is

Moomin, you are one of the most well-read people I've ever come across. The crown is yours. Although I do think it's funny that the Eng Lit nobs me and Elephants are the ones doing Bridget Jones and Jilly Cooper - not sure quite what that says about us!

Pogle, I am in awe of anyone who studied (or even understood) Science. My Chemistry classes literally made me cry. Eng Lit, on the other hand, was a doss breeze because Any Fule can read a book! No carrot cake at my uni, either - lots of whiskey, though, and intense late night discussions about how similar Henry IV and Hamlet were. How pretentious Grin

Don't you wish you'd followed your university dream? I was going to set up a theatre company ... sigh.

Anyway, back to the thread.

Pogle, is this something to do with modifying people's memories? Or rewriting history?

Moomin - MCP!

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 22/09/2010 10:12

oh YUM. look I am here at the same time as you!

My friend and I were going to set up a theatre company on the back of a cart :o

But I have fulfilled some of my uni dreams. For example, I left university :)

steamedtreaclesponge · 22/09/2010 10:35

wotcha chaps!

any cake about? have just returned from two weeks camping out in the mongolian mountains and am FED UP with boring boiled carrots...

Elephants, I went to that university too... and I did English Lit. When were you there? I wonder if we know each other in RL? That would be passing strange...

PS I'm leaving you the lamb - they eat a lot of mutton over here and he's a bit traumatised

Pogleswood · 22/09/2010 11:08

Treacle! Lovely to see you - and the lamb - we'll look after him,(if he can survive on the raft diet of cake, cookies, marshmallows, treacle tart....Smile)

Have a marshmallow - but the carrots are much better for you,you know!

Pogleswood · 22/09/2010 11:13

And ,yes we plan on rewriting history, ruthlessly eliminating anything non-historical from our account...

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 22/09/2010 11:47

He'll be a chubby lamb when we've finished with him

Will you be writing about the Battle of Hastings, and all that, Pogle?

Really treacle? I left 3 years ago. Did you go to the Big Library much?

Pogleswood · 22/09/2010 12:03

We will,Elephants, because at least that is Memorable. We were going to cover another memorable date too - but I've forgotten itGrin
Have a dogeared paperback copy of our definative work as a prize!

Elephants,I am now having another outbreak of nosiness, and wondering what you didn't like about university? Feel free to tell me to mind my own business - or to private message me with the answer,of course! Grin

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 22/09/2010 12:08

Oh yay! I was stabbing in the dark there, having half read that once about 12 years ago :o

I'm a sucker for nosiness, have the tendency to be far too open if anything . Will PM you.

MoominMymbleandMy · 22/09/2010 14:50

Hooray, Treacle! Smile Shame about the boiled carrots but hope the Intrepid Adventuring is going well otherwise.

Also feeling very Envy of folk who got to read books, eat cake and visit the pretty round library. I did Law, which also meant lots of work, and I can still remember wanting to hit an Eng Lit student who was whining that The Mayor of Casterbridge was drivel and she couldn't understand it - shame on her.

...But my wife thinks it's a good chance for him to get some book learning, and it will only be for a couple of years...

Spacehoppa · 22/09/2010 15:08

I did Law as well. Three years of total boredom. No way I would have got the Jilly Cooper, I'm far too highbrow Hmm

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 22/09/2010 15:10

No, The Faerie Queene is drivel and that's days of my life I'll never get back. Not like that nice useful tort law (torte law?) - something to do with food anyway. :o

So he's not going to school? Is he becoming a servant?

llandb · 22/09/2010 17:53
llandb · 22/09/2010 17:57

Ha, I knew you lot had done time at the Unseen University! (Will feel daft if am mistaken about UU having round library)

Pogleswood · 22/09/2010 17:58

Oh,thats why Moomin is so good with the cakes and treacle tart,is it? Grin

Is he going to be apprenticed,Moomin?

And Hello Spacehoppa - are you new here?

Pogleswood · 22/09/2010 18:03

Ah,good plan llandb - I was a bit worried about him having to live on raft food, poor lamb!

An Eng Litter, moi? Nah! (Glad my patchy reading coverage of Great Literature isn't glaringly obvious though!)
