AIBU Books Game Part Seven

Hi all, here we are again ...

As always, everyone welcome to pile in with AIBU book synopses, as long as you bring ice cream or something equally tempting for when we're stuck.

To continue mine - I'm in charge but it's terribly difficult to keep control. I don't know how long I can keep their respect. I didn't ask to be in charge ...

I might actually have to go and buy some cheesy footballs now, even though they are the FOOD OF SHAME

Still stuck, MCP everyone!

Pogleswood · 22/07/2010 20:27

I love cheesy footballs - and those Ritz cheese sandwich biscuits with artificial cheese goop in the middle...

Yes,I am Sue Barton (Visiting Nurse, actually - but who cares!) You can choose as your prize a genuine Henry Street nurse's uniform,or a year's supply of first aid supplies, which ever you prefer...
I'll pass on sniffing your shower gel as I think you are way out of my league - but if Rangeman Enterprises will lend me a cool car I promise not to destroy it!

Sue Barton is good,Elephants - supposedly based on the author's nursing career(she graduated in 1915,and it sounds as if she had an interesting life, she was a friend of Rose Wilder Lane). Not quite as keen on the later books when she is married, and has a string of lively red-headed children in the "Anne of Green Gables" tradition - but she keeps nursing, and there are a lot of strong female role models in there.
Absolutely no resemblance of any kind to "Her Surgeon Lover"!

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 23/07/2010 11:26

What is it with clusters of red-headed children? I am reading "Anybody Can Do Anything" atm and they are all ginger too!

CJCregg · 23/07/2010 11:30

treacle, what was yours? The shower gel one?!

Yes, Pol, I am the Gruffalo's child. The snow fell fast, and the wind blew wild ... Have a juicy nut as a prize!

OP posts:
steamedtreaclesponge · 26/07/2010 14:18

Ah, might have to give those Sue Barton ones a go! And I'll take the first aid supplies please, I'm terribly clumsy so I expect they'll come in handy...

CJ, I was Ranger from Janet Evanovich's books about Stephanie Plum (all the books are pretty much the same so it could have been any of them!) They are trashy but just SO funny, I love them.

Who is still going? Elephants, MCP?

AIBU to try and save my sister?

Pogleswood · 26/07/2010 16:49

Not at all,Treacle - in fact I think family duty obliges you to save her....I expect it isn't as simple as that though,is it?!

I've just finished The Better Mousetrap, which I really enjoyed,so thanks for getting me onto it! All those years standing in the library, looking at Tom Holt books and thinking, nope, don't fancy that....

I am completely baffled by Elephant's one!

Poledra · 26/07/2010 22:08

Elephants, is the missing piece of footwear perhaps made out of a rather unusual material (well, unusual for footwear!)?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 27/07/2010 11:23

Oh I give up, maybe I am the only person who loves this boot book

Poledra · 27/07/2010 12:01

Oops - never heard of that one, sorry Elephants!

steamedtreaclesponge · 27/07/2010 14:57

Aha! Actually, I have read that, Elephants, but just didn't remember it... Love the illustrations, anything with Quentin Blake's pictures in gets my vote. I actually saw him at the National Theatre last year - there were actors reading out bits of Roald Dahl's books for Roald Dahl day, and he was illustrating them as they talked, it was amazing to watch.

...Well, I know I have to save her, but it'll be very dangerous. It's all her own fault for getting into this mess...

CJCregg · 31/07/2010 23:16

Oh dear, the thread needs watering as much as my plants.

Treacle, where are you? We need some clues please!

AIBU to think my rather weak-willed husband should stand up to his father and stop him doing something he might regret?

OP posts:
Pogleswood · 01/08/2010 10:25

Hello CJ! It has gone a bit quiet, hasn't it?
So is your husband afraid of his father,or is that an exaggeration?

Elephants,I am amazed that none of us got your last! My fave Quentin Blake is All Join In,which I liked much more than the DCs did - I had to read it to myself sometimes

AIBU to really rather despise my husband?

Back later.....

CJCregg · 01/08/2010 23:27

Hi Pogle! And anyone else who's out there ...

No, he's not afraid of his father, he's just not very assertive and I think he should do something to stop the old man marrying this unsuitable woman. She'll be DH's stepmother, for goodness sake!

What has your DH done, Pogle?! In debt? Lost his job?

OP posts:
CJCregg · 01/08/2010 23:45

PS I'm going on holiday tomorrow for a week so don't think I'm abandoning the thread - I will be back and hoping for some new AIBUs, come on. Seven threads, we can't let it wither now ...

OP posts:
steamedtreaclesponge · 02/08/2010 10:51

Hello, hello! Morning!

Hmm... sounds a bit U to me, Pogle, why do you despise him?

(I love All Join In too, had a poster from the book with ducks and umbrellas on my wall all through Uni)

CJ, is this woman a former girlfriend of your DH? Or just very young? Do you think she's after his money?

...It's her own fault for being so greedy, I suppose, she knew not to eat it...

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 02/08/2010 18:11

Hi Treacle, I think YANBU, but are you sure the rather sleazy goblins are going to be there?

Pogleswood · 02/08/2010 19:30

Hello!

...he has no spirit - all he cares about is his social life, his appearance and his stupid friends...

steamedtreaclesponge · 03/08/2010 08:39

Hmm... were you an actress before you married, Pogle? Do you think your husband might have a secret life that you know nothing about?

And yes, Elephants, well done! Fortunately the goblins were there, nasty little buggers...

Pogleswood · 03/08/2010 12:52

I am embarrassed to admit I can't remember if I was an actress - now you mention it I think I may have been!

A secret life? When would he find the time?He seems fully occupied attending balls and composing witty poems!

Who were you then?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 03/08/2010 15:47

Need to put pellets down for the blighters if you ask me, treacle.

What do I win? hopefully no juicy sapphic love fruit?

steamedtreaclesponge · 04/08/2010 09:58

How about a nice fruit basket? With a pineapple on top?

Pogle, I was Lizzie from Rosetti's Goblin Market.

Was just about to ask CJ for more clues but she's on holiday... most inconsiderate, if you ask me!

AIBU to think she's rather pretty?

MoominMymbleandMy · 04/08/2010 10:49

Hello, all! Sorry to vanish for so long. I'm promising myself a marathon catching-up session, and in the meantime...

AIBU to think it was a good thing that I did pick up that knife?

steamedtreaclesponge · 04/08/2010 11:08

MOOOOMIIIIN! Where have you BEEEEEN? How's the new house coming along?

We have missed you! And we had to start this new thread without your usual amazing list of books. I demand that you read through EVERYTHING you missed and do a new list for us

As for picking up the knife... did it make you fall asleep? Or did you lose a couple of fingers doing it?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 04/08/2010 11:44

Hi Moomin!

Did you use it to hurt someone, or it is subtler than that?

Treacle, is she living in your house?

steamedtreaclesponge · 04/08/2010 12:09

...No, Elephants, she's not living in my house - in fact, she's not living at all...
