To cry at the new John Lewis ad?

Probably I am. But I LOVE that song and found the ad very moving (and I love JL too so was very pleased it wasn't for tampax or something else). Sad but true!

I cried.

It's beautifully filmed and I can't be the only one who wants to live a John Lewis life? (doesn't it look lovely)

kingbeat23 · 28/04/2010 09:25

oh good not just me then, thought i must be very hormonal at the mo and was feeling crappy last night - phew!

JodieO · 28/04/2010 09:25

Anyone have a youtube link to it as I've not seen it

BunnyLebowski · 28/04/2010 09:33

Is it this one?

Meh

You lot are mental.

Hassled · 28/04/2010 09:38

I welled up, I have to admit. The song is so corny, but I do love it.

JodieO · 28/04/2010 09:43

Oh I really liked that, and I love that song. An advert I like for a change! Thank you for linking it.

woosam · 28/04/2010 10:02

But it's not a love song!! It's a song he wrote about the woman he was divorcing. He has said it's not anti-women but is saying women have the ability to manipulate and wreck havoc simply because they're women and men love them so. If I remember correctly he was saying it's more about admiration.

JodieO · 28/04/2010 10:09

Ah I know, I thought the words were a little off, but I think I drew a different sentiment from them as to what he meant. That doesn't make a lot of sense but it does in my mind!

BunnyLebowski · 28/04/2010 10:13

'And she'll promise you more
Than the Garden of Eden
Then she'll carelessly cut you
And laugh while you're bleedin''

How the hell does that fit??

Bad song choice and cheesy, trite content.

brogan2 · 28/04/2010 10:15

Well Bunny, that kinda fits with a song about someone you're divorcing!

BunnyLebowski · 28/04/2010 10:33

Definitely brogan but in the context of a schmaltzy ad about life and family it's just wrong.

MrsDickens · 28/04/2010 10:38

BusyMissIzzy, yes, I thought of that sequence in 'Up' too. Some of these rip-offs are shameless! Like the Berocca ad with the treadmills, which is a completely barefaced steal of OK Go dancing on treadmills (here, if there's anyone left in the world who hasn't seen it and is interested - www.youtube.com/watch?v=pv5zWaTEVkI&feature=related)

Back to the topic, I'm getting seriously hacked off with John Lewis's advertising tbh. It seems all wrong and too over the top for them, somehow. Though, having watched the TV doc, I can see that they're desperate to recoup some of their lost profits....

lineky · 28/04/2010 10:45

Just had a baby girl and this ad really got me - I was a sniveling wreck

mylovelymonster · 28/04/2010 10:50

Made me cry too...either the sentimentality of it all, or the favourite song......or maybe how much profit JL will undoubtedly make out of me, cradle to grave.........

GibbonInARibbon · 28/04/2010 10:53

I am pregnant and homonal but this ad did not make me cry, though I thought it was lovely.

The one at Christmas (sweet child of mine) was more emotional imo.

RebeccaRabbit · 28/04/2010 10:54

OP - YANBU, I got choked up too.

Gay40 · 28/04/2010 11:01

It made me think of my own little one as a teenager and an adult and then having her own life with us fondly watching on (she's 8).

When I think of her going on a gap year or anything grown up, it does make me cry a bit

whatwasthatagain · 28/04/2010 11:15

I cried - in fact, I'm welling up now just thinking about it. And I am not hormonal, just susceptible to bouts of melancholy. Agree with Monty27 and Gay40 about the passing of time and how brief it can all seem. And summer's lease hath all too short a date........

crumpette · 28/04/2010 11:15

I found it irrationally upsetting because DD died so it reminded me of everything she won't be doing. Aside from that, the lyrics of the song are not too nice in parts, and it also makes me realise that I have spent far too much money in John Lewis and will continue to do so for my entire life so all in all, I do not like the advert!

whatwasthatagain · 28/04/2010 11:17

Oh crumpette - Now I am having a little weep for you.

carocaro · 28/04/2010 11:21

No YANBU

My friend works in the marketing and design dept at John Lewis, they were all shown the finished ad in a large group, she said most people had a tear or two in their eye, especially the Mums!

kreecherlivesupstairs · 28/04/2010 11:27

I don't watch a lot of telly, so seeing this advert was miraculous. I did cry, my dd (8.11) told me to open my eyes really wide to stop the tears coming out. That's what she does at school when she's upset. Her statement really made me blub.

notso · 28/04/2010 11:36

crumpette.
