Probably I am. But I LOVE that song and found the ad very moving (and I love JL too so was very pleased it wasn't for tampax or something else). Sad but true!

this shit

StrictlyKatty · 28/04/2010 13:44

I love it

I imagine myself like that when I'm old, still shopping at John Lewis I am obsessed with the place, I honestly find little reason to shop anywhere else.

Well it brought a lump to my throat when I saw it last night. I thought about DD getting older and it made me feel so sad. I didn't notice the lyrics at all.

I was hoping that maybe the fact that I was being so hormonal about it might mean I was finally pregnant (hopelessly deluded emoticon).

doggiesayswoof · 28/04/2010 16:39

What is the song?

Haven't seen the ad.

Lutyens · 28/04/2010 16:49

I do find it manipulative and a touch misogynist. BUT BUT BUT.......
that bit where the baby crawls into the tunnel and the little girl comes out? I burst out crying in huge heaving sobs every time at that point because I feel that's exactly how fast dd has grown up

helloooooooooooo · 28/04/2010 17:12

Quite clearly I am a cold hearted bitch as I find it rather long boring and rambly

But then again I have never in my life stepped foot in a John Lewis (there aren't any oop north) so what do I know.

MilaMae · 28/04/2010 17:20

I was beginning to get worried that the last shot would be featuring a very nice John Lewis coffin.

Heidi28 · 28/04/2010 17:20

It reminds me of the banned Xbox ad 'Life is Short'.

Warning: if you haven't seen it, it was banned because it drew 136 complaints from viewers who found it "offensive, shocking and in bad taste".

I was actually moved by the final message.

Liked the much more gentle JL ad too.

overmydeadbody · 28/04/2010 17:27

oh for goodness sake you soppy lot!!

pull yourselves together, it is an advert, it's only purpose it to make you spend your money.

LoopyJoose · 28/04/2010 17:29

MilaMae !!!

Helloooooooooo there's one in Cheadle, south Manchester - my Mum's never out of it!

I am weeping just thinking about it. My DS is 10 weeks and I keep picturing him crawling out of a tunnel aged 8.

Redazzy · 28/04/2010 17:32

It is a genius piece of advertising. Look at all the posts here talking about it! I was on the puter last night not looking at the TV and looked up because I love the Billy Joel version of the song. Then I was glued to it and blubbed at the end.

Told Dh to watch it and he too went rather misty eyed. John Lewis is being very clever recently with publicity.

HellenaHandcart · 28/04/2010 17:35

Someone earlier said that who wouldn't want her life...me! She's so.....conformist isn't she?

Who wanted to see the gap year, the drunken orgies, the divorce, the new hubby, the step family, the fantastic career as a high flying lawyer / doctor / artist etc. And actually i wouldn't have minded the grave - but their ending was a bit safer i guess...

Dull!

motheroftwoboys · 28/04/2010 17:36

Hello Hellooooo! - not sure how far ooop north you are but I am Newcastle and we have very big John Lewis and a Waitrose. And I like the ad ...

This f*ing advert has ensured 100% that even if John Lewis had 99% reductions in store I would never shop there. Nauseating crap.

ChippyMinton · 28/04/2010 17:45

It's only an advert

navyeyelasH · 28/04/2010 17:59

I didn't like or dislike the ad, just a bit meh. I do like JL though.

I'm just curious about how it's sexist? I think no matter how women are portrayed someone will find it offending, we each are playing a role; it would be silly to ignore that fact. Some women are like that so I don't get the stereotyping comment.

but I am scared to say that as expat scares me a little.

marantha · 28/04/2010 18:04

I don't think it's sexist, either. It just gets on my wick. John Lewis are a company like any other out to make money, if anyone wants to believe that they "care" about their client-base and their life, then they are free to believe it. It's rubbish, of course.
Businesses are out to make money.

Although I must say that the f*ing Halifax "Isa Isa baby" advert also makes me want to chuck things at the tv. Bastards of hell!!!!!!!!!!!

CloudDragon · 28/04/2010 18:20

at 40 weeks I now cry at everything but this had me sobbing

posieparker · 28/04/2010 18:24

I cried at the song on the radio, thinking of a wonderful woman I know who has to cope with her husband having MN and fading...life can be truly shit.

RunawayWife · 28/04/2010 18:26

I love this add and the song

Cerubina · 28/04/2010 18:28

I hate it (hate's a strong word, but...)

I physically shudder at how it shows a whole life being lived inside 90 seconds, I just don't like that kind of thing. Underlines how short life is and I dislike books and films that do the same thing - you need time to come to terms with the passing of time I think!

And I can't believe no one's remarked on how utterly unconvincing her bump is.
