Probably I am. But I LOVE that song and found the ad very moving (and I love JL too so was very pleased it wasn't for tampax or something else). Sad but true!

Dp is in tears each time he sees it.
I am noplussed by it. A lifetime shopping at John Lewis just depresses me. I reckon if they did coffins they would have shown a funeral scene. In fact they do flowers online don't they, couldn't they have tied that in?

Shaz10 · 29/04/2010 07:59

Sean and the other one on 6music has just described it as "the ad that makes you want to kill yourself"

takethatlady · 29/04/2010 08:12

I was telling somebody on another thread the other day - my DH cried at this advert - I walked into the living room and found him wiping away a tear! I've only seen it on youtube but I didn't cry.

CurlyCasper · 29/04/2010 09:01

28 weeks pregnant, hormonal, and still no tears here. Don't get the fuss.

pookamoo · 29/04/2010 09:24

spiikypixie We watched the tale of Benjamin Button the other day, and his life goes in reverse (sort of) so when he gets to the end, he is a baby.
"He closed his eyes and went to sleep"
wwwwaaaaaaa!!!! sob sob sob

tiawomt · 29/04/2010 09:52

in the freezer too i'm afraid....just didn't get it

Downdog · 29/04/2010 09:58

it's a great song really well used by JL. You can tell it's their ad from the very beginning which is really clever.

When I was BF I used to cry at the Pampers/immunisation ad with all the little babies - EVERY TIME

westwingfan · 29/04/2010 10:40

reminded me of an old kodak advert - but i still cried at it. all about how quickly time passes - but if you buy stuff at JL it will last for ages?? do they have the same sofa or something - could not see through the tears..

Boodstress · 29/04/2010 10:41

Why do we need to take it so blinkin literally (i.e analyze all the lyrics..as it happens I think the lyrics are great love hurts - it doesn't discrimante, in this case its the man(if we must analyse)) it is the overall message. The ad encapsulates a life time in a couple of minutes which in itself is really clever and it doesn't matter that its idyllic, aspirational..or rather why is that a bad thing? Do I want to look at how short AND shite life can be? It's not brain washing us to go to JL but it is advertising for gawwds sake, what do we expect. In fact much like the Guiness White Horses ad, it may well generate awards and vast discussion but not directly impact the bottom line but why do we have to feel attacked by it..I am admittedly 40.2 weeks pregnant but my other half loved it too. It reminded us both how quick DS will grow up and we chatted about the fact that we will probably be grandparents one day, although it freaked us out a bit we had a great chat about it.

But the Halifax Isa Isa baby...don't get me started...

JazzieJeff · 29/04/2010 11:09

17 weeks pg now and feeling large and tearful... desparately wanted to cry lol! In fact DH was downstairs watching TV and I was upstairs having a bath when it came on last time and just the music floating up the stairs made me sniffle a bit; thank God I'm not the only one! But then I got a bit upset over that sponsor a donkey advert earlier too. If I'm going to have time off work ill, I definately shouldn't watch any TV! I can't be trusted!

nimbs · 29/04/2010 11:11

Like the ad - like another poster said (sorry can't remember who) it reminds me of the children's book 'once there were giants' - that guarantees a sob once you're a mum.

happyland · 29/04/2010 12:42

hmmm not so much. (heart of stone icon)

Firky · 29/04/2010 12:53

you are being unreasonable.
You are also being manipulated.
Bloody awful,condescending bollox.
I hate that advert.

mmm, hormones pphhfft. me ,never.

fernie3 · 29/04/2010 12:55

I was all teary as well! I keep thinking of my children going through life and getting old!

WebDude · 29/04/2010 12:59

the Halifax Isa Isa baby...don't get me started...

LOL. I take it you're not a fan...

Better than every ad most ads by the Halifax but I find so many annoying... even the music for one B+Q ad about some discount card was getting on my nerves.

I did quite enjoy one of B+Q where a station was decorated, and it took me ages to look across early enough (normally looking at PCs) to spot the name of the station, which I have now forgotten.

Will it get me to buy anything from these stores? Unlikely. Only time I might take notice of an advert is where a particular product at a low price is promoted and I can compare with web stores... then I might be tempted a little.

Cerys36 · 29/04/2010 13:43

Speaking as a hardcore feminist with a serious career and a new baby... this advert is beautiful and clever - and does what it should do, which is encourage JL's target demographic to feel good about them and themselves!!

When it came on for the first time (and we hadn't heard anything about it beforehand) DH and I both just stopped talking and were transfixed by the TV; when it ended we just looked at each other weepily and both said "that was a lovely ad!" It summarises a feeling that life is short and shouldn't be wasted.

I loathe sexist ads - this one is clever because the male singer is admiring the woman for being a rounded person with a full life - which works great as an image for JL.

Boodstress · 29/04/2010 14:10

Couldn't agree more Cerys36

missmoopy · 29/04/2010 14:16

Just makes me worry about getting old! And doubt very much their clothes last that long!

scottishmummy · 29/04/2010 20:45

schlocky faux-aspirational.dont get it at all.certainly dont relate to it or get why it evokes such response

missmoopy · 29/04/2010 20:47

Me neither scottishmummy

VigourMortis · 29/04/2010 21:00

Not enough weight issues, broken hearts or defunct laptops for my liking...

Northernlurker · 30/04/2010 17:28

Well I hadn't seen this till today and I watched it at work thinking 'Tsk I won't cry at an ad'......got as far as the birthday cake and I was absolutely gone. I think it's a good if smug ad, beautifully shot and I love the song.

diddl · 30/04/2010 17:31

Doesn´t move me at all.
And as one poster put quite early on-in a couple of scenes why does the girls it there vacantly with her mouth open?

And the song-I thought it was about him loving someone despite her faults.

Ryoko · 30/04/2010 20:49

I hate that add it's boring, too long and whats it got to do with JL anyway?.

Northernlurker · 30/04/2010 20:52

Apparently EVERYTHING in the ad is a JL product.
