To cry at the new John Lewis ad?

Probably I am. But I LOVE that song and found the ad very moving (and I love JL too so was very pleased it wasn't for tampax or something else). Sad but true!

i've not seen the ad on tv so had a wee look at one of the you tube links- i cry very easily but that advert didn't even produce a tear i was listening to the song more than i was watching though- found it offensive aswell!

Arkala · 28/04/2010 19:09

Well, glad to see I am not being total unreasonable but clearly this is a love it / hate it issue!

Seems to have had more impact on those who:

a) are extra hormonal for some reason (tick for me)
b) like JL anyway (big tick for me, live in the sticks now, the only thing I miss about London is Peter Jones!)
c) are a bit soppy to begin with (er, yes another tick for me)

Beautifully filmed, the tone is just perfect for the way that many feel about the store, a clever piece of advertising, subtle and very stylish - yes i am a marketeer.

Well done JL!...Now, about my broken pram....!

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 28/04/2010 19:13

Not sure about the choice of song - the words aren't that nice.....

certainly did not make me cry - it's a bit smug and middle class "happy family" ish - which of course is who it's aimed at.

teaandcakeplease · 28/04/2010 19:17

I'm not pregnant and definitely not near PMT time either and I properly cried after seeing ad. Lovely ad.

brogan2 · 28/04/2010 19:17

Hellooooooooo, whereabouts up north are you?

There's two in Manchester (ok one is Cheshire), one in Newcastle, one in Sheffield, one in Liverpool, one in Glasgow and another in Edinburgh.

teaandcakeplease · 28/04/2010 19:18

Yeah I'm soppy and like John Lewis anyway too....

cantmummyhaveabreak · 28/04/2010 19:20

wow- i was gonna start a thread on this the other night but thought it'd be a silly thread... but i blubbed too!! Even my DH said it was very moving... he's not sloppy in the slightest!!

SanctiMoanyArse · 28/04/2010 19:20

'Although I must say that the f*ing Halifax "Isa Isa baby" advert also makes me want to chuck things at the tv. Bastards of hell!!!!!!!!!!! '

watch it on fast forward, about X4 iirc

she looks like a hellish chicken

v v funny

pointydog · 28/04/2010 19:23

I saw this ad last night and I definitely did not find it worthy of tears.

yab a nutter

marriednotdead · 28/04/2010 19:27

So glad I found this thread- thought I was losing the plot as I snivelled through it! Am 44 and makes me realise how fast my DD has grown up. She's 23- how did her childhood fly by so fast?

Kathyjelly · 28/04/2010 19:28

Maybe, a bit. But I've always loved that song and my 20mo has forsaken the meercat advert for "she can kill with her eyes".

My boy's got great taste - v proud mum

HerHonesty · 28/04/2010 19:51

one of the worst ads ever. frumpfantastic. if thought my life could be reduced to the episodes i have with quite possibly THE MOST BORING shop on this planet, i would jump of a bridge now.

usualsuspect · 28/04/2010 19:53

My lifes more Wilkinsons and primark than John Lewis ..so no it doesn't make me cry

fluffles · 28/04/2010 19:58

I really like the visuals and while the song sounds lovely - when you listen to the lyrics it's shocking!

I do NOT identify with this:

She can ruin your faith with her casual lies
And she'll take what you give her, as long as it's free
Yeah, she steals like a thief
Then she'll carelessly cut you
And laugh while you're bleedin'
And she's suddenly cruel

Now if you want a soppy John Lewis advert, this one for waitrose always makes me well up at christmas time:

sorry.

Joining the soppy/emotional gang
Wept buckets

kitpuss · 28/04/2010 20:10

Ah it's a lovely advert.
To be honest I didn't notice the lyrics at all, just the images, which almost had me in tears despite my husband prattling on beside me all the way through.
BTW not pregnant and don't shop at John Lewis!

hmmSleep · 28/04/2010 20:28

I think the John Lewis Ad agency have been taking notes from this

Didn't make me emotional, but the book 'Once there were giants' did the first few times I read it to my daughter, and guess it's a similar sentiment. Although think that was more realising that my own Mother feels such strong love for me as I do for my dcs.

HLaurens · 28/04/2010 20:35

Made me almost cry too! I thought I would be the only one - and then I got even more emotional when I realized it was John Lewis because I love to shop there...

...and I'm not pregnant or premenstrual. How sad am I?

abr1de · 28/04/2010 20:37

Yes, what is it about John Lewis that makes us feel at home? I always feel it offers me a reflection of my life as it could be if I were a better housewife and worked harder and earned more: a kind of shinier and neater version of myself. But not scary or intimidating.

I also like the way they're organised: the fact that they're all shareholders. It's a kind of socialism/capitalism mixture that appeals to my wet Tory sentiments.

Daisypops · 28/04/2010 20:43

I laughed out loud when I saw this thread.

Yes I cry everytime I see it

megonthemoon · 28/04/2010 20:45

I'm a renowned tv weeper and I'm pregnant too so even worse at the moment and I love John Lewis , but I didn't cry. Feel like I've seen the ad before - there was an insurance ad years ago of a girl growing up and having her own family etc.

Song sounds pretty, if you don't listen to the words.

I preferred the JL Christmas ads with kids playing with adult things. That was clever, and stood out from the usual Christmas stuff, but this is just schmaltzy

IfAtFirstUDontSucceed · 28/04/2010 20:52

Oh My Goodness, I read this thread without having actually seen the advert, so I youtubed it!

I'm quite a toughy when it comes to soppy stuff, but the tears came, and continued to thinking about it afterwards.

I can't even blame it on pregnancy hormones like some of you!

monkeybum1 · 28/04/2010 21:07

It makes me sad, but only because they obviously hired someone who can't sing to murder a Billy Joel classic. Such a shame.
