Now if you a vegan, respect to you and your choice. You have obviously considered the whole food chain as it works in the UK and set out your stall.

If you don't like the taste and texture of meat, or can't afford it, well, fair enough.

If for religious reasons your diet is a manifestation of your belief, I understand.

But if you don't eat meat because you don't like the idea of eating baby animals, but you continue to use dairy products then I just need to know why? Are you ignorant or just sentimental?

To answer your original question OP,

Yes YABU, actually YABVVVU, and a little teeny bit ignorant yourself.

Doobydoo · 08/04/2010 20:02

Annieloebseder has said it for me

Janos · 08/04/2010 20:07

Oh look, a deliberately provocative AIBU post from an armchair warrior who has the sheer fearlessness and chutzpah to 'tell it like it is' over the internet.

hark at you op,all bristling for a scrap. you go girlfriend give dem milk slurping hypocrites hell.the nerve of them

nickytwotimes · 08/04/2010 21:18

In answer to the op, I am a veggie and I do agree with you. I think a lot of veggies kid themselves.
I eat eggs and dairy and am well aware of the connection to meat industry, what happens to calves and male chicks, etc. I live in a dairy farming area so I see it.
For me it is compromise.
I would like to be vegan in the future, but in the mean time it is not possible. FOr now, this'll have to do.

Janos · 08/04/2010 21:26

Don't see how OP.

You made a deliberately inflammatory post (peppered with a few insults) to get a reaction from people.

scottishmummy · 08/04/2010 21:28

any post managing to drop in chutzpah is good for me

runnybottom · 08/04/2010 21:29

MrsRigby do you eat dairy products though? And if you do, do you not mind that animals die for that?

I love veal, I wish it was easier to get, not to mention cheaper, its a horrendous price.

iwastooearlytobeayummymummy · 08/04/2010 21:45

Hi Janos

I'm fairly new to this MN business and assumed that AIBU was an opportunity to raise a questions and provoke discussion
I had no idea that the original post needed to be couched in completely bland terms.

The responses have been interesting and often informative.

Perhaps hide the thread if it offends you?

OP posts:
scottishmummy · 08/04/2010 21:48

oh dont be so damn bossy commanding people to hide threads when you come out in hives and throw rattle out pram about veggies drinking milk

iwastooearlytobeayummymummy · 08/04/2010 21:51

NotanOtter · 08/04/2010 22:04

how would 'veggies' wond you up Rubys?

Anyone calling me a 'veggie' needs a virtual flooring anyway

I done advertise I done eat meat - I just don't. People act surprised when they find out I am - like its a big deal????

Pozzled · 08/04/2010 22:47

I don't eat meat but I eat dairy. I don't go around preaching about it, don't criticise anyone else for eating meat and I don't talk about the cute little baby animals. Why on earth should I need to justify my decision to anyone? I couldn't care less whether you eat bread, pasta, cheese, fish, vegetables or dead flies. That's your choice. I have made mine.

tethersend · 08/04/2010 23:25

I quite like cheese if that helps.

seashore · 08/04/2010 23:28

Itwastooearly . . . I'm reading Alice Hoffman's Blackbird House and I had venison stew for dins today!

I agree with NotanOtter about the term veggie, it always annoyed me so much when I was one and still does, sorry I did use it in my earlier post out of sheer laziness!

MyThumbsHaveGoneWeird · 09/04/2010 11:14

I dont understand the tone of a lot of the responses here. I dont think you are being rude at all! I have often wondered myself if milk drinking vegetarians realise what happens to all the unwanted baby cows which have to be produced and removed from their mothers every year. I am now suspecting that some people would rather not think of this and hence become rather defensive and upset when it is pointed out.

YANBU

5DollarShake · 09/04/2010 11:49

So MrsRigby, given your reasons for being vegetarian, do you consume diary products?

Not saying you should or shouldn't, but as you've taken offense, I (perhaps wrongly) assume you do. Correct me if I'm wrong!

Everyone has their own cut-off points, and that's fine - I guess I do just wonder how you (generic) reconcile doing one thing (not eating meat), but not doing another of equal 'value' (consuming diary products which result in animal slaughter anyway).

I hope I haven't offended with these questions - I am genuinely interested, and of course am ready to be told that you do not consume diary for the same reasons you don't eat meat.

birdsandblossoms · 09/04/2010 11:57

OP - look, you started out being deliberately inflammatory. It's pretty disingenuous to get shirty when people pick up on that.

Mind you, having said that.... I'm glad to see that someone finally has the nerve to take on the cabal of evil that is vegetarianism.

They need taking down a peg or two by jove, those filthy hypocrites!

(Sorry, couldn't resist )

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 09/04/2010 13:57

OP - can you honestly not see how posing your question by asking '...are you ignorant or just sentimental?' was very inflammatory? And can you not understand that there are other ways to ask the question without being '...couched in completely bland terms...'?

It's like me asking whether anyone who posts such an inflammatory OP without realising how rude it looks, is stupid or just insensitive.
