Now if you a vegan, respect to you and your choice. You have obviously considered the whole food chain as it works in the UK and set out your stall.

If you don't like the taste and texture of meat, or can't afford it, well, fair enough.

If for religious reasons your diet is a manifestation of your belief, I understand.

But if you don't eat meat because you don't like the idea of eating baby animals, but you continue to use dairy products then I just need to know why? Are you ignorant or just sentimental?

I will stop eating animals when they stop eating each other.

That is the single most convincing argument for why being a vegetarian is a futile pursuit I have ever heard. Must remember to tell this to DH in the morning. Might knock a bit of sense into the hippyish tit and wecan get on with a nice beef bourgnignon for dinner...

LittlePushka · 07/04/2010 23:48

Redbin,..just wondering... animals do you eat that are carniverous??

iwastooearlytobeayummymummy · 07/04/2010 23:49

Spider
no probs with colleague at all, and she isn't a vegetarian.

Why are male chicks crushed?

I didn't know that.

Can't they just grow up and get eaten? Or are all "chickens" girls?

iwastooearlytobeayummymummy · 07/04/2010 23:52

Spider
I love being called young , you've made my night

OP posts:
ElleBing · 07/04/2010 23:53

I saw the thing about male chick execution when Hugh Fearnley was boo-hooing about the poor battery-farmed chickens.

It was upsetting to watch but tbpfh chicken tastes too nice for me to care. Sorry if that makes me sound cruel but it's true.

RedbinDipperrs · 07/04/2010 23:54

Littlepushka - badgers.

iwastooearlytobeayummymummy · 07/04/2010 23:55

bit of fun

50/50 chance

males have the wrong bone structure for putting on muscle ie meat

OP posts:
RedbinDipperrs · 07/04/2010 23:56

Littlepushka - I also eat fish, they may not be carnivorous but they are certainly cannibalistic.

Valpollicella · 07/04/2010 23:56

BOf they aren't crusehd, they grow up to be less desirable chicken, but chiken none the less

LittlePushka · 07/04/2010 23:56

Redbin,...never knew badger burgers were available! You eat badger..?

RedbinDipperrs · 07/04/2010 23:58

LittlePushka - sure, if I find a dead one.

NotanOtter · 08/04/2010 00:04

you either want to eat cows or you don't
no 'ignorance' here - i am under no illusion that my not eating them will make a difference
I like cows - they are animals to me not food

iwastooearlytobeayummymummy · 08/04/2010 00:04

OK one last time

How can a dairy eating vegetarin square their decision based solely on the

' I don't eat animals and I disagree with animals dying for my nutritional intake?'

As I mentioned in my OP this excludes religious and taste/cost arguments

I do kind of see where you are coming from, iwastooearly.. but I think most vegetarians are actually better clued up about meat production etc than most other people, who seem to have lost touch with farming and food production completely.

I was talking about dd's farm project to other mums at the bus stop the otherweek, and I was saying how it is good that they are learning this stuff. I said "I mean, until he met me, DH didn't know that a cow has to have a calve every year in order to produce milk! Can you imagine?" ...only to register the puzzled faces all around me. "Do they?" they said.

I don't think it's vegetarians you want to be cross with- it's the meat eating, milk drinking people who have no clue (and don't want to know) how their food comes about.

And I don't buy meat from supermarkets. I have a good butcher and fishmonger, who provide far superior quality for pretty much the same price- and deliver it to my work for nothing!

iwastooearlytobeayummymummy · 08/04/2010 00:06

oops vegetarian

OP posts:
ElleBing · 08/04/2010 00:06

NotanOtter how can you say cows are not food? Fillet mignon? Yes please

It's that Quorn stuff that's not food. It's produced in a big chemical bucket and it's weird and given the choice of eating a nice free-range chicken and lab-produced weirdness I know which I'd choose.

iwastooearlytobeayummymummy · 08/04/2010 00:09

good point Jooly

off to bed now

Just wondering IABU in the morning

OP posts:
iwastooearlytobeayummymummy · 08/04/2010 00:12

Elle

Don't even get me started on Quorn!

I was involved in its very early development and it was grown like a carpet EEUGH!

OP posts:
ElleBing · 08/04/2010 00:18

I have two veggie mates and will happily cook them a nutroast/nice tart from scratch when cooking for them.

But when they say "can we have revolting Quorn turkey-style roll please?" WHEN I AM COOKING A FUCKING TURKEY I am a bit "wtf girls?!" Yes, yes I know it's because it's not actual turkey but I wouldn't decide that I hate lentils but then start eating chicken that has been formed to imitate lentils.

NotanOtter · 08/04/2010 00:40

quorn roast rocks

my whole family prefer quorn bacon to waitrose dry cured!

ElleBing · 08/04/2010 00:54

Then your family are weird, NotanOtter.

MrsWobbleTheWaitress · 08/04/2010 06:31

JoolyJoo - now you're generalising! I think it's clear from this thread that there are plenty of well-informed meat and dairy consumers on MN who choose to do it despite knowing how it all works and/or deciding on the most ethical way of doing it.

I work on what's most natural for us is probably going to be the most healthy. So really, ideally, we should stop eating wheat/corn based products and dairy entirely, and stick to a diet of meat, eggs, fruit, berries, nuts and vegetables. Then we'd all be fine.

EricNorthmansmistress · 08/04/2010 08:21

Yes, there are vegetarians who don't realise that consuming dairy or eggs or wearing leather contributes to the animal cruelty and slaughter industry. However, to accuse all vegetarians of being either sentimental or ignorant is completely rude.

Nobody can be perfect. All we can do is our best within our limitations. I stopped eating all dairy for several years and only bought 6 local, free range organic eggs every two weeks. I kept it up for a long time when I was living alone and it was relatively easy. But then I got together with my carnivore DH, got pregnant and now have a DS. I started eating dairy with a vengeance during pregnancy because I needed to and I don't know how to reduce it now - DS needs milk, yoghurt and cheese of which we buy the best we can afford.

I would prefer not to consume cruelty laden dairy products but it is difficult to afford cruelty free (even when you can guarantee it is so) on a budget. If we were rich it would be easy.

I don't buy leather shoes for myself and have no plans to change that. I know it's a paltry effort, but it's better than no effort.
