Am I being unreasonable for getting upset that my husband keeps looking at porn?

I have just read the Natasha Walter book 'Living Dolls.' I am not sure it is that great a book, although there is an interesting discussion of it on the Review Show on the iplayer.

Anyway, she talks to some of the men who work on Nuts and so on, and asked if they would be happy for their daughters to work as glamour models. They all said no. One man even justified it by saying it wouldn't be suitable because his family were middle class.

She really should have explored the class element of the sex industry in that book.

Really, Kerry? I read that the average porn model makes £8 grand a year.

Exactly MillyR. Men might be happy to watch porn stars, but they would be horrified if their daughter or sister became one, and they wouldn't marry one. Which suggests that they don't have a huge amount of respect for them.

Irishchic · 22/02/2010 21:39

I suppose we shall just have to agree to disagree threeblonde

Personally speaking, erotic literature and Art have no problem with..but the Porn Industry of today just leaves me cold, I feel very strongly that women are the losers in it all.

Kerrymumbles is that extract meant to support your position here? All it does is highlight just how completely sordid the whole business is.

Roobie · 22/02/2010 21:49

The rate of pay is no validation. Would you happily show this to your dd or ds as encouragement to choose porn as a 'career'?

dittany
"Female porn stars aren't paid gobs of money."

They usually get gobs of something else!

Roobie · 22/02/2010 21:53

Indeed, it is an appalling and mortifying job....

well, he is hardly going to be emotionally moved by the economics of the porn trade and stop viewing it, is he? if anything, that would be an even bigger turn-on - hence Redtube.

MillyR · 22/02/2010 21:58

What is redtube?

Some people's narrowmindedness astounds me. What some people failt or ealise is that all women have a right to their own, individual opinion. They don't have to form their opinion for the general good of all women.

Men are supposed to respect our views, but we aren't supposed to respect theirs?! I always thought it worked both ways...
