AIBU Books Game Part Six

MoominMymbleandMy · 26/01/2010 19:16

Now, we're on thread number six!

As before, we frame an AIBU from the point of view of a character in a book and everyone tries to guess the book and/or the character.

Everyone welcome to play/time-waste as much or as little as they please.

New thread, new AIBU...

AIBU to think I'm seeing a ghost?

OP posts:
steamedtreaclesponge · 26/02/2010 13:36

MCP everyone!

...Well, I suppose she dresses like a bit of a tart at times, but she's actually very innocent, I think. I worry about her, especially with all these murders that keep happening in this town...

MoominMymbleandMy · 26/02/2010 15:53

Afternoon all, and welcome back, llandb.

NIMCP here and even dozier than usual which is what happens when you are silly enough to sit up and watch the skating. I really should know better!

...We're in Australia and the signal's coming from the other side of the world...

OP posts:
Pogleswood · 26/02/2010 16:09

Moomin, you can look for the signal if you want but you are all doomed ,whatever you do - sorry to be negative

This is on my fairly short list of Books Not To Read Under Any Circumstances ...

MoominMymbleandMy · 26/02/2010 17:11

Whew! Clever, clever Pogle, I thought I might get to spin that one out a bit longer.

It's sad, but well worth reading. Very haunting (I dreamed about it two nights in a row after finishing it) but not at all harrowing.

AIBU to pay a girl for a kiss?

OP posts:
ElephantsAndMiasmas · 26/02/2010 20:30

What was yours Moomin? Sounds terrifying. YANBU as long as she doesn't mind, any particular girl?

...They keep disturbing me - don't they understand that I need peace to Work?

Pogleswood · 26/02/2010 21:12

Thanks so much for the kind offer of suicide pills, perhaps I could take a rain check?(I don't think I could bring myself to poison JT!)

I've read quite a lot of Nevile Shute, and I find even the more cheerful ones a bit depressing - and I am not good with books where there is mass extermination (I did read Raymond Briggs' When the wind blows, and that was harrowing enough.Historical novels where everyone is being wiped out by plague have the same effect)
Maybe I should try it though....

MCP all!

MoominMymbleandMy · 26/02/2010 21:34

Try polishing the old lamp, Pogle. It might surprise you.

Mine was "On the Beach" by Nevil Shute, Elephants, and I wouldn't say it was terrifying, or as harrowing as When the Wind Blows. Dignified, saddening and very haunting - I can't say any more or I'll spoil it!

Hmm, are you an eminent artist with a chaotic family, Elephants?

MCP all!

...Oh, I wasn't paying her to kiss me! She's given me lots of kisses for free over the years. I was paying her to kiss someone else...

OP posts:
Pogleswood · 27/02/2010 10:22

Well,I tried polishing the lamp - and a giant rat in polyester trousers appeared, squeaked at me,stole my cheese sandwich and vanished in a puff of smoke....

I have moved On The Beach tentatively to my "To Read" pile...

MCP!

steamedtreaclesponge · 27/02/2010 11:53

Were you paying her to kiss a prefect, Moomin?

MCP everyone else!

...Surely it can't be a coincidence that all the murdered women had lovers who were vampires...

Pogleswood · 27/02/2010 15:48

Vampires? okay...
While I feel knowing this should help,I'm not sure it does! We're not in the Deep South, are we?

MCP!

pollywollydoodle · 27/02/2010 20:52

are you a writer elephant?

are you a bit of a rotter, moomin?

llandb · 27/02/2010 23:24

Hello All!

Well, my co-boatees seem to have jumped ship and started guessing things, leaving me adrift with the vodka, the chocolate and the cough mixture (offers to Pogle, can beam up Willy Wonka stylee).

Would offer the above to a certain "love" rat to see whether they have a laxative or polyester-melting effect, (preferably not the first without the second as well), but no rats here as my boat is sinking....

Now, then. AIBU to tire of the big smoke?

MCP and goodnight from the drifting boat

MoominMymbleandMy · 01/03/2010 00:50

Greetings all! I hope JT has reformed his wicked ways now he has a balloon to amuse him.

Go to the top of the form, Treacle! Yes, it was a prefect. We thought a row with the Sixth (swots all!) would be a splendid way to finish up our career at the Coll.

This thread is getting even more surreal than usual ...

No idea on anyone's AIBUs, and finding it tricky sometimes to distinguish between these and the Life and Times of JT, Rodent Adventurer.

Anyway, back to mine (if anyone can still remember it) - the thing is, I kept it quiet but I've always had a bit of crush on this man, even though everyone else was laughing and being rude about him. Well, he was married to my aunt ...

steamedtreaclesponge · 01/03/2010 11:45

Morning all!

Hurrah! I gloat!

Your aunt, CJ? Sounds rather U to me!

Moomin, are these creatures liable to set fire to things?

Yes Pogle, we are in the Deep South - of course, most of the vamps head for New Orleans, but Bon Temps seems to be getting its fair share at the moment...

MCP everyone

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 01/03/2010 14:11

Ooh dear CJ, if he's got a rather juvenile name I'm afraid YABVU - and I rather think you'll find he swings in a very different direction.

Where are you thinking of moving to, llandb?

Yes my family are rather chaotic Moomin, although I don't think eminent is the word - more "forgotten". Indeed Polly I am a writer, but it's hardly surprising I can't write with all this hassle and pressure, and the leaking roof!

CJCregg · 01/03/2010 14:45

I think you're right, Elephants - he does seem to be spending a lot of time with this new American chap ... but I find myself suddenly rather taken with the Duke of Paddington, so maybe Mummy will get her wish to marry me into the aristocracy after all ...

Have you been blocked for years? Are you so broke that one of your daughters is sitting in the kitchen sink?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 01/03/2010 14:53

Good for you, and for Mummy. What did she ever see in that man? Yay, haven't got one for ages!

You are quite right CJ, you win a copy of my new book "Abraham Gogodancing". Not sure it will be such a success as my first.

Bill Nighy was the best person in the world for that part, such melancholy combined with terrible whining. Love the bit where the family have just calculated their income as nothing/year, and he wanders through looking for biscuits.

CJCregg · 01/03/2010 18:48
Pogleswood · 01/03/2010 20:19

Well,I've got no idea who any of you are/were! Except for Treacle ,and I don't know if she was BU or not....

pollywollydoodle · 01/03/2010 21:25

llandb yanbu if you are in the middle of the great fire of london but you may be being unreasonable if you are leaving the city to find the rural idyll...it won't happen for ages

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 01/03/2010 23:10

I was Mortmain from I Capture The Castle, and if you haven't read it, do so at once.

NIMCP on everything please

steamedtreaclesponge · 02/03/2010 08:24

CJ, what was yours?

MCP everyone else!

CJCregg · 02/03/2010 09:11

I was Polly Montdore from Love in a Cold Climate. The one who fell in love with the Lecherous Lecturer and then discovered he was gay. God, I love those books!

Also love I Capture The Castle, Elephants - one of my favourite books ever, and for once not spoiled by the film version.

MCP ...

MoominMymbleandMy · 02/03/2010 14:52

Afternoon, all!

What a clean sweep of AIBUs! Thanks to the wonders of Google, I've finally found Treacle's. Are they worth a look?

MCP, llandb! I think it's just yours and mine running at the moment.

...I don't think we were BU. You could say we were driven to it. And I'm sure they won't set fire to anything because they aren't intelligent. How could they be?...

Oh, and if anyone's still puzzled, my last one was Kipling's Stalky & Co.
