To have reported these builders ?

At lunch time I walked to the nearest shops to work and passed a site where there are retirement homes being built. As I walked by a couple of builders whistled and shouted 'oy' . I noticed a sign outside the site saying something about 'considerate construction' so rang it immediately! I wasn't rude but I did point out that shouting at people walking by was hardly considerate.

Why do I feel so guilty then!? MEH!

I get whistled at and I'm covered from head to toe (am muslim) ffs. Just stupid wanky men showing off and intimidating women. Cos they can. Cos its still seen as ok and women are still just sexual objects not real people with feelings.
And yes, I'd report them.

noonki · 03/11/2008 17:33

YANBU - I find it intimidating because you are normally out numbered.

Tortington · 03/11/2008 17:34

you would laugh if they got the sack

before xmas

for whistling

.....wtf

needmorecoffee · 03/11/2008 17:35

no-one makes them whistle and shout. One assumes they have noticed its the 21st century?

combustiblelemon · 03/11/2008 17:40

Things are incredibly tough for those in the construction industry at the moment and yet those men, on a site that has signed up to a policy which explicitly forbids this kind of behaviour, decided to shout and whistle. I wouldn't laugh if they were sacked- I'd feel terribly sorry for their families- but it would be a direct result of their own stupidity and lack of self control.

"but I just don't see the big deal and the need to complain(except in NMC when it was directed at her beautiful dd) "

oh but when it's directed at her beautiful dd, it's only builders larking around doncha know.

LittleWhizzingBella · 03/11/2008 17:43

If they get sacked before christmas, it wont' be because of this.

It will be because of a series of incidents.

If they shouted racist abuse at someone, would everyone be so horrified at the idea of them getting sacked before christmas?

LittleWhizzingBella · 03/11/2008 17:44

Years ago a black friend of mine used to get Chalky noises every time he passed a building site.

Builders larking around doncha know.

He's have been insane to worry about it.

needmorecoffee · 03/11/2008 17:48

yeah, he not got a sense of humour. I am sick of poeple getting accused of that if they don't put up with shit directed at them.

Quattrocento · 03/11/2008 18:01

I am profoundly shocked and depressed by the women on this thread who collude in male chauvinism.

Oh and YANBU to the OP. Well done you.

modernart · 03/11/2008 18:03

YA so NOT BU. If more people phoned up this sort of thing would die out. I used to be actually scared to pass builders when I was younger; it's very intimidating. Go you, beanieb.

2shoeshissbangwhoosh · 03/11/2008 18:04

LittleWhizzingBella whistling at someone is not the same as calling someones disabled child a spaz.

bodycolder · 03/11/2008 18:08

Any situation where another person is disrespectful or intimidating another is wrong whether it be sex race disability any of it is wrong. How would any of you feel if your sons were doing the harassing or your daughters were being insulted like this.If your child came home and said they felt scared and sickened by a group of men shouting would you tell her to lighten up or would you want them reprimanded.

LittleWhizzingBella · 03/11/2008 18:12

No, it is not the same.

But it is in the same ball-park. It is denying the essential humanity of someone and reducing them to only one part of their humanity. In the case of a child called a spaz, their disability. In the case of a woman wolf-whistled, her sexuality. In the case of a black person, their colour or race.

You appear to have a hierarchy of who can be offended. I don't. I think women's humanity is every bit as important as that of a child, a disabled person, a black person, or any other group that could be a target for male bonding by denigration. I just think builders should find a better way to bond, frankly.

Tortington · 03/11/2008 18:19

talk about over thinking it

a builder whistled.

its hardly a call to germain greEr ffs

fffffffffffffffffffffffffffooooooooookinell

bodycolder · 03/11/2008 18:20

LWB well said.

LittleWhizzingBella · 03/11/2008 18:26

I disagree Custardo.

Builders whistle for a reason.

The reason is connected with the status of women in society, the relations between men and women and male bonding.

I think it's interesting to think about that. I don't think it's over-thinking.

bodycolder · 03/11/2008 18:28

If the OP felt unconfortable then it was wrong full stop imho Even if she is the only person who feels that way it is her right to have her say They certainly did

Quattrocento · 03/11/2008 18:30

What is over-thinking? Is it like overwriting? Or is it thinking too much. If the latter, i honestly don't think it's possible. See builders are people, not a subspecies. They are people reacting in a sexist way - which means that people in our society (you Custy? surely not) think sexism is okay on certain levels.

The worrying thing is that other women think sexism is okay. Because they are bringing up the next generation of dimwitted whistlers ... and so it goes on...

DonnyLass · 03/11/2008 18:39

nearly whacked white van idiots in face with my walking stick last week so no YANBU ... i was in a lot of pain, 36weeks waddling from osteopath and they leered out of window at me ... knobcheeses ... its horrible actually .. you know youre heffalumping around there's just no need to be a shit

beanieb · 03/11/2008 18:40

OK Quatro - I am sorry that I found this uncomfortable and I am sorry that I felt embarrassed by their behaviour. Obvioulsy I need to get a life, along with those who think it's wrong for people to shout out 'Spaz'

OP posts:
bodycolder · 03/11/2008 18:41
